Big V D1M Finals system

Interesting to see that 3 out of the top 4 ranked teams eliminated after just 40 minutes of play off basketball.

I would have thought if you go through the season and win the minor premiership there should be some competitive advantage to safeguard your season from one off game.

Is it time for a different finals system?

Top 4 should playoff for a conference title first, 1v2 and 3v4 so the advantage is a double chance.
The winner of each conference should then play off in a grand final at Dandenong or SBC.

^ That is a pretty good idea

However, There are a few other issues that need to be addressed first. For instance D1M is the middle competition but is the largest and the only one that has conferences.

Some teams are allowed two imports and others get knocked back. How I this fair? If you need a second import I'm sorry but you should be playing D2.

With the fixture some teams had bye weekends and others didn't.

The gap between top teams and bottom teams is way to big to justify keeping the comp that size. Some of the top teams should be playing SCM and some of the bottom teams probably would've been best served playing D2M.

Hey @642721, can you explain this?

"Some teams are allowed two imports and others get knocked back. "

really? do the league rules not cover whether teams can have imports or not? Seems truly bizarre but that seems to be the BigV in recent years...

SCM is allowed 2 restricted players.
D1 AND D2 are allowed 1 but country teams can apply to the league to have 2

Who decides what are in each competition? Big V or is it a member based competition where the clubs decide?

The previous administration of Big V used to review what teams where each season and make the appropriate changes. Unfortunately for the last few years it has been strict promotion relegation. As a result the competitions are out of whack, there are some Div 1 teams that should be given a crack at the top level holding these teams down in D1 has made the gap between Div1 and Div2 is huge.

The last couple of teams coming up from D2 into D1 have really struggled big time despite adding players to their teams that won D2

Yet the teams that have gone up from D1 to SCM have been more than competitive and made finals (Casey this year)

Western Ports team that won D2 was stronger than the team feilded in D1, they lost key players, but they still survived.

The bottom half of D1 isn't that much better than the top half of D2, the biggest gap is between the good and bad teams in D1.

Camberwell lost Nat O'Hara who was their best player and was nominated for the D1 Allstar team in 2015. He was their leading Scorer, leading rebounder, and had the most assists last year. Not sure how that is the same team

Tuner and Mckinnon both SEABL players for last couple of years.
Still to go from dominating D2 to last in their conference in D1 is big.

Camberwell was significantly weaker this year and was in the mix for D2 finals for most of the year.

Lets be honest, the biggest divide is $$$ spent in all 3 divisions. The top teams in each division clearly spend the most money, hence how Casey went well in SCM, and how Keilor all of a sudden went from bottom to top of D1 in one season, and how top 6 in D2 all have imports, 7-10 don't.

Blackburn are the exception and credit to them, but finishing clearly first in their conference and bombing out early in finals 2 years in a row shows if you added an import to their team they'd push over the hump.

Somebody has to win....If people (mainly coaches) want to complain about the finals system maybe they should actually attend the AGM to fix this matter instead of sending someone there just to attend and not know anything. I agree top 4 should have second chance. D1M only bigv league that has conferences. Doesn't make sense at all especially after a really good showing last year with top 8.

I know for a fact that one of the teams who finished near the top of D1M put it to the league but the league determined it to be too late despite it still being the pre-season. Bizarre.

Blackburn are impressive, there are a number of guys on that roster (Trewella x 2, D'Agostino, Roberts, Walker) who all played at the club from under 12s right through to a D1M contender.

Keilor gets COY as they had the number 1 overall seed I would imagine.

The Geelong D1M team has zero imports, all local guys and started the season with no bigs above 6'3" tall, then they got some bigs with Seb 6' 10" coming in and Pup 9' 10" coming back from college which helps the balance.

Blackburn I believe had their best big guy out, so maybe that's where they lost it & the fact Geelong's shooters actually hit some shots when it counted, not the fact that they had only one game to play, a home game at that!!?

Game was a cracker and the Supercats deserved their win, anyone bitching about the format of finals can do exactly what has been suggested, get to an AGM and state your case.

Kelior spent the money, brought in a leader like chuck long. Then you add that to the returning players and a import. That's how they came back up the ladder

Whoever he was (No.2) for Blackburn got his karma back like a bitch. Gave the Supercats bench a big L sign after hitting a shot late in the game, though he was over the line I reckon, HA HA HA!

The Blackburn player was Roberts and lets give him a break. Young kid in a big game playing well and probably over reacted. He will learn from this. Interesting though that he was warned by someone on the Geelong bench at the time of the L sign, not to celebrate too early.

Was a great game but for those complaining about the finals system the equation is simple, protect home court.

Roberts was the best player on the court by a mile in that game and had been harassed all game by the supercats bench, he was just returning serve

Reality is, the best team won on their day and if you get home court but blow it, well that's on you and only you! As has been recognised by the guys on BigV TV, everyone knew the finals system at the start of the season, no excuses.

Grand final teams are set after Keillor got over Warrnambool and Geelong failed to out shoot a red hot Chelsea.

Can't see how the Gulls can play that well again next week, but you just never know. I don't think Keillor gave Warrnambool much of a chance to win, but the Supercats will be pretty disappointed at their persistently poor 3 point attempts last night, so they shoul, it was appalling yet they only went down by 2.

For Geelong Varley was 1- 13 and Bentley was 1 -6 from beyond the arc. they had both been great all season

For Chelsea Standerfer was 6-14 and Brasser 6-12 3's. If they shoot like that they will get Keilor next week

@Reddy Red, I was there and I think everyone saw that Geelong had a clear advantage in that game, it wasn't to get into a shootout with the Gulls either. As bad as their 3 point shooting was, they nearly pinched it. Can't see the Gulls getting over Keilor next week, they will be smarter that Geelong who essentially blew it because they played Chelsea at their game.

This will be Brasser's last home game before he goes back to Southern Pen next year. Chelsea might surprise Keillor.

They might, but do you think they will be allowed to get as many open looks is the Thunder play it smart? Also if Keilor expose them in the paint, which Geelong failed to do, Keilor will win in straight sets. If Keilor fall for the same trap Geelong did and try to out shoot Chelsea from outside the arc, yes the Gulls have a chance for sure!

Game 1 of finals in the men Chelsea 88 keep out Keilor 82 and the Gull's import Standerfer drops 43 points in his usual 40 minutes on court, wow!

I guess they may prove many wrong and go all the way, if the Thunder can't stop him...

Congratulations to Ringwood on winning SCM again - first time they've gone back to back. Waverley did play much better in Game 2 than Game 1, but Ringwood's experience came through in the end!
