Emerging Opals win Gold at World Uni Games

The victory follows a gold medal in 2007 and bronze medals in 2005, 2009, 2011 and 2013 while this year, the Emerging Opals lost just one game overall, a five-point defeat to Russia.

After traversing arguably the toughest group in the pool stage, the Aussies defeated USA, host nation Chinese Taipei and a rampaging Japanese side to win the gold medal in convincing fashion.
Dominant throughout the tournament, Lauren Scherf and Darcee Garbin again controlled proceedings.

Scherf (18 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, four steals, four blocks) came very close to a 5x5 game while Garbin flirted with a triple-double to finish with a game-high 30 points on 11-21 shooting, ten boards and six assists.
Great performance!

Pretty disappointing. Surely Lucas won't get another gig after this. As for the team they picked, terrible. Heads should roll at BA now.

Just a bad coach, should have gotten Heal and Joyce, they would have picked better "international style" players, and are far better game day coaches, and they could have made BA a few dollars on the side as well. The only better pairing would have been Peter "Bucks" Buckle and Marty "master coach" Clarke, or a couple of parents from the next age group down.

Agree Paul. So many better players not selected and as for the coaching staff...well BA should hang their heads in shame.

The tournament means nothing. Gold means nothing.

Finally managed to watch a replay of the game last night via Eurosport's, though almost half the game was no shown, what was clear from the parts that were , was that Japan given a couple more minutes would have run over the top of thevAussies, theirvspeed and ball handling and ability to get to the rim far outclassed our Aussie ladies, if Japan had been blessed with a big like Scherf think it would have been a very different outcome.
Taking nothing away from the win as the girls played hard, it did shine a light on what the future of our women's team is going to need, lightening quick guards that make smart passes and can play defence.
To japans credit they play quick tough smart basketball, we saw that at Worlds too, seems their new style of play is one the rest of the world may have to take note of.
Before their loss to Australia. Japan's smallest winning margin for the tournament was 20, we were lucky to come off with that win I think.

Lucas has proven several times he's a winning coach, think his biggest flaw is possibly his people skills in the past, but that could also be a clash of personalities or he just doesn't suffer BS from parents and players.

Regardless he got the job done and showed those un19 gems coaches Just how it's done, UN19s is two years away , he could easily coach that without interference to his WNBL commitments, I mean if we can have an Opals coach who lives on an entirely different continent coaching a WNBA team and puts that first before her national commitments, I can't see how a WNBL coach couldn't be considered for a junior team position.

What chance does C Brooks have of hitting the court with Lightning, if she barely played in the uni games? Will be interesting.

Same can be said of Panousis and Clydesdale though, considering Lucas is their WNBL coach he didn't rely on them too much, Panousis in particular.

Going to be very interesting to see how the lightening roster plays out, Clydesdale gave up a starting 5 pg captaincy at Dandenong, hope she's not going to regret it.

Clydesdale gave up nothing at Dandy.. what other starting PG/Captain in the league averages only 27 minutes a game with the back up logging 23 min.

Japanese squad next year something like.

Fujioka/Yasuma/Machida or yoshida
Mizushima/Hayashi
Miyazawa/Kurihara or Mawuli
Nagaoka/Takada
Tokashiki/Umezawa/Osaki or asako

Quicker, Faster and much taller in comparison to Asia Cup and olympic squads.
Also a very good 3 point shooting side.

Well let's hope this glimpse of Lucas and his coaching choices is not reflective of the coming wnbl season , or her 27min average might be halved lol

Every chance Lucas will go with Novosel at the point like he did at times in Townsville.

Hopefully Lucas develops more young girls.

Even though they may not be able to travel because of school commitments, they should still be involved with home games/training etc.

Should be done around the league. Simply not enough young players getting top level experience.
