WNBL preseason underway

"Boomers Open Pre-Season With A Win

14908289_1128393160582776_4067493814831312313_n
The Deakin Melbourne Boomers have opened up season 2017-18 with a strong 90-76 win against an Invitational All-Star team in Sunbury.

The Boomers led from the opening seconds of the game when Bec Cole (12pts, 5ast) converted a quick-fire lay-up from the tip-off.

With stars Liz Cambage and Britt Smart watching on from the sidelines, the Boomers rotated 11 players with a focus of getting some time into this year's squad to start the pre-season.

Jenna O’Hea (16pts, 4ast) wasted little time showing her impeccable ability to hit shots, while Louella Tomlinson (12pts, 6rbs, 3ast, 3blks) also settled in to her new surroundings.

Returning from recent Opals representation at the Asia Cup, Maddie Garrick looked good with 14pts and 3ast.

Excitingly for Boomers fans, in her first game Kalani Purcell looked sharp and was involved in many dashing plays, finishing the game with 10pts, 8rbs, 3ast and 5stls in just over 20-minutes.

As is the case after every Boomers game, the players stayed on court to meet all the fans and were surrounded by children and families seeking photos and autographs. As expected, Liz Cambage proved to be very popular amongst the fans, enjoying the chance to be back amongst her supporters in Melbourne.

The Boomers now move on to play two more pre-season games next weekend, both against other WNBL teams.

Friday Sept 15 vs Adelaide Lightning @ Nunawading Basketball Stadium (7:30pm)

Saturday Sept 16 vs Dandenong Rangers @ Kilsyth Basketball Stadium (6:00pm)"

They played a BigV invitational team, didn't give the end score, Cambage sat on the side lines....season hasn't even started you would think after such a long stint not playing their prized addition would want to blow some cobwebs off.

Hmm wonder just what will the season bring from Cambage?

I second that, and I suspect the reason she didn't play was because she arrived back in Melbourne after her 'DJ duties' on Thursday. Nonetheless, I am intrigued to see whether she plays the subsequent preseason games.

Hope they are going to get their monies worth from her, she's certainly getting hers from a Boomers, every other player in the league has been in prep for the coming season and she's off playing DJs ....she makes a mockery of the league

Remember the ranger days of mark wright , he too would buy the best team , it never brought a championship and he was a way better coach than Molloy

Don't measure their first hit out win against a pulled together BigV side , it's never going to be reflective of how the season will go
Some good quality line ups this season , Boomers might have cam age but that's never been an advantage to any team of late

After hanging around so long, getting a gig with a newly formed cash strapped (until recently) club is hardly keep getting coaching gigs. He couldn't cut it in men's bball and that is women's misfortune. My guess is he initially kept it cheap to get the job then tried to use it to leverage his business. Just look at his failed attempt to bring no names from so called College of basketball to Boomers.

Any other teams started pre-season yet?

Think I read that Perth won't have Williams at all until the season starts due to USA rep duties

That camp runs from Sept 30-Oct 2, so hopefully she can get to Perth in time for their first game.

I must admit on a side note I'm a tad disappointed with the fox games, it does seem heavily skewed to the Vic teams and while that's great for me as a Boomers supporter, I'd feel for the interstate fans. I would've liked to see the likes of Williams, Suzy, Sami and Bishop get a bit more air time. Hopefully the non-fox teams are able to still run their youtube streams or similar so we can see all the games.

Teams on TV this season as per today's announcement:

6: Melbourne
5: Dandenong
4: Bendigo, Sydney
3: Canberra
2: Adelaide, Perth, Townsville

Neither of Townsville's TV appearances are home games (Perth & Adelaide get 1 home game each)

At least all final series games will be televised , it's not perfect but it's a dam sight more than what WNBL have had, and really when ABC were showing the WNBL it was only ever one game then per week.
All teams do get the chance to be televised at some stage

Wasn't at the game, but not a great early sign if that was the final score.. Boomers had Ash Grant, Tomlinson, Smart, Cole, Kasey Burton, Ott, Peri Kalka, O'Hea, Conti, Garrick & Purcell playing, while Adelaide only suited up Nicholson, Elsworthy, Brook, Panousis, Hodges, Good, Novosel & Seekamp.

Melb was only missing Liz, whereas Adelaide were missing Bishop, Hamblin, Clydesdale and Planeta.

Conti also had a bad shooting game.

Most of the Opals and fringe opals played well.

Lavey very lack lustre at the PG spot that's for sure, Spanish guard didn't play, but suited up, not sure what's happening there, but I'd say she would be the preferred stating PG once season is under way. Antoniadou hopefully will be given bit more crt time, she runs the floor well.

Melbourne came out slow, rangers seemed very patchy but it is their first hit out, Melbourne surely have a better PG than Conti, they once again have no organisation on the floor, Cambage didn't suit up, is she injured or are they saving her for the season to at least get some value from her?. And what has happened to,Ohea, haven't seen her play for at least four years, she looked lost out there, certainly not the player she was, now it's clearer why she was not picked for Opals if that's how she trialled.

Lightening apparently very strong against Melbourne last night even with three key players missing .

Regardless of what she's done here, the USA colleges interested in someone her size would in all probability not be in the top ten, and after un19 worlds, it's unlikely any of note would be looking at those not already signed.

Good on her though for staying put, she's better off here more options ....WAFL is one lol, though a four year contract limits her, she better hope it works out

Half the top pgs in college are 5'6 an under. Height was never an issue.

Tell that to Mitchell, the smallest player in the WNBA.

Reply #647104 | Report this post

Lots of reasons why college isn't an option, grades is usually the big one, then it comes down to just who the good colleges have already recruited, Australia is not their preferred or first option, so considering just these facts, unless you have good grades, decent attributes, height being one of them in ALL positions and a good college has failed to secure that one position they need that happens to be the one they see you fit into, then really it's not easy no matter who you are ( unless mum or dad have some connections ) to get a spot in a good college thatscworth giving up what you already have here.
If a player is already within the stable of a WNBL team( few if anynNBL teams bother with players under 22) then remaining in Australia is a viable option.

And by the way Mitchell was a brainiac and still didn't get into a good college till she transferred and red shirted, she also was not an automatic success in WNBL either, her success or more to the point recognition has come much later in her career and brought about by her inclusion into the WNBL via Mark Wright to which Joyce then found out rangers had a "naturalised" PG that could actually replace Harrower

Most PGs in the college system are home grown and recruited long before ourvAussie PGs are even eligible to be recruited.

Looks like the games tonight were all thrillers, Bendigo defeated Melbourne 73 - 72 on a buzzer beater from Rachel Banham. No Cambage again for the Boomers.

Notable stats:
Melb:
Ash Grant: 33.48 mins: 31 pts, 8 reb, 3 stl, 3 blk
Jenna O'Hea: 33.18 mins: 13 pts, 5 reb, 7 ast, 2 stl
Kalani Purcell: 32.45 mins: 11 pts, 9 reb, 3 ast, 3 stl, 4 blo

Bendigo:
Rachel Banham: 26.31 mins: 22 pts, 5 reb, 3 ast
Betnijah Laney: 21.46 mins: 14 pts, 11 reb, 3 stl
Nadeen Payne: 24.42 mins: 12 pts, 8 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl, 1 blk

Kelsey Griffin was well held and fouled out after 24.20 mins, 4 pts (0/9FG), 5 reb and 1 ast. As was Maddie Garrick with 3 pts (1/10FG), 1 reb and 1 stl in 18.12 mins. Looks like Ash Grant is a massive get for Melb as a DP - what were Perth thinking there, she's been the Boomers' best player so far this pre-season IMO.

Limited stats so far for the Townsville/Perth game, but from what I've found:
Townsville:
Mia Murray: 18 pts (all 3s)
Darcee Garbin: 17 pts, 10 reb
Zitina Aokuso: 15 pts, 8 reb
Mikhaela Donnelly: 10 pts
Laurin Mincy: 9 pts

Perth:
Alice Kunek: 23 pts, 7 reb
Toni Farnworth: 16 pts, 8 reb, 3 stl
Kayla Standish: 14 pts, 5 reb
Sami Whitcomb: 3 ast (probably scored, but she was listed as the leading assists for the Lynx)

Chloe Molloy is killing it since committing to footy.

Chloe Molloy hopes boom 2017 continues into VFLW grand final between Darebin and Diamond Creek
In 2017 Chloe Molloy has won the goalkicking in both the women's TAC Cup and VFLW with a monster combined tally of 54 goals across 20 matches.
But she's more than just a sharp shooter who'll play a pivotal role for Diamond Creek in their VFLW grand final against arch rivals Darebin at Etihad Stadium on Sunday. She's shown more than a touch of defensive versatility too.
