Illawarra v Perth

Congratulations on Mr 500 tonight, probably the best 3 point shooter for his size I've seen.

Must win for Illawarra, for Perth it's a chance to stay on top and need to prove they can play without Martin.

Rhys martin is a thug. Hawks got away with way too much contact. 6ft in 39mins for a team with perths game style is a joke. Please explaim how that was a foul on vague? If thats a foul perth should have shot 30ft. I do forget though its perth so everyone here is ok seeing them get short changed by calls.

It's the old Bad Boys theory, if you play intense D and just keep fouling, the refs can't call everything, the flow of the game just becomes physical.

They do have issues, you dont go up 16 of your issues are that bad. I dont think there is a 24 point turnaround unless something changes, no trips to the ft line until it was out, game was called differentlt after the 1st and it was decidedly one way, players lost focus and didn't bring it. When teams lose big leads usually somwthinf changes. 4 ft seriously, 7 blocks for the hawks prettys sure some of them had to be fouls

I wish there was a way to properly quantify a player's entire contribution to a team; be it tangibles and intangibles.

Damian Martin would probably be the best player in the league

Also think this game showed why cotton is a shooting guard first, not a point guard. Finds it hard to distribute with his small size and is easily knocked around putting him off balance. Resulted in a lot of turnovers.

Loss is on cats role players though, they missed every open shot created when hawks doubled tokoto or cotton.

bench failed miserably:
* Wagstaff - 0/7 seriously ?
* Steindl - airball, lacks confidence, shadow of former self
* Kernich drew looks like he belongs in a state league
* Cooke - poor rebounds, cant seem to consistently score. Cats should of gone for a Boone style player who can actually average a decent clip

Hire probably played the best, and thats not a good sign.

Cats need to take note next season - start looking at the Martin replacement (a tip - Kenny aint it) thats in the league and flash the money around. Mitch Creek, Sobey etc...

@Manu - I was think the same thing about Martin. Perth are a totally different team with him out. You would think with his stats that a perth could cover him adequately but nope, irreplaceable.

I guess from day 1 Perth recruits are told Damo is the guy you look to and listen to, and if he's willing to defend his ass off then you are too. That's just how it is. You hustle here

Doesn't really explain why our offence sucks so hard atm though.
Great D creates some easy buckets for sure, but last season we had a genuine inside weapon in Angus Brandt. This season either he's not the same player, we're not using him as well, or teams are better at countering him. Either way, taking away that dimension from our game has left us looking pretty ordinary in the half court.

Yeah, he is a point guard after all. Generally speaking, the position has obviously changed and they may as well be called 'points guards', but Martin is a throwback. Actually runs sets and organises shit. He's smart as and dictates their offensive tempo. Playing off the ball allows him to step back and see what is working too

Yeah pretty much all been said.
Kenny is a fantastic backup PG, especially as backup for Damo. He's been a great addition to the team. That 3-man rotation of Martin, Cotton, and Kenny is very reliable. But Martin is the lynchpin. Kenny isn't starting 5 calibre.
Cotton can certainly handle the ball, but much better as the SG where he cops less close checking. Plus defensively nobody can match Martin when it comes to guarding opposition PGs.
Don't know WTF it is with Wagstaff, but has been this way for a while now, either runs red-hot or stone-cold.
Brandt must be carrying an injury? Started the season well, but now seems to be struggling.
Steindl. In theory it seemed like a great idea. Why wasn't he playing NBL. GF in Perth, seemed almost serendipitous.
But whatever he had a couple of seasons back, seems to have gone. Lost confidence maybe?
Cooke? Nah, we need somebody who is starting material, and then imagine Brandt coming off the bench.

Steindl is already signed on, not sure why based on form.

Steindl in the preseason was getting plays ran from him and now it is the regular season gets nothing. Good old Gleeson coaching, he is good at running a methodical team but can't think of the fly too well. For instance, brought in Bragg for 2 plays the subs him out.
