WNBL 2017-18 Awards

Another quality effort by the WNBL. The first official thing I've heard from the league about any awards was today on twitter when they said they would announce Rookie of the Year later ... today. Way to build it up.

Anyway congrats to Ezi Magbegor on her win. Well deserved, and near-unanimous with 41 of the 42 possible votes. Maddison Rocci 2nd, Kiera Rowe 3rd.

Congrats also to Andy Stewart for winning Coach of the Year. Also well deserved IMO (with the possible exception of the final round! grrrr)
Cheryl Chambers was 2nd, and Chris Lucas 3rd.

Drip feed continues. All-Star 5 as expected. Can't really complain about anyone missing there.

Whitcomb - Williams - Taylor - Batkovic - Cambage

Will know who the MVP is tomorrow

No complaints here either. That's a mighty fine 5.

I can barely handle all this fanfare though.

A very deserving all star 5.. I'd be happy with any of those 5 being crowned the MVP tomorrow, I thinking Williams will get it though.

Hopefully they announce the top 10 vote getters tomorrow along with the MVP - I'd be interested to see who was thereabouts as you could just about draw out of a hat those who'd be placing 6-15th.

The build up has been amazing...

One of the best all-star 5's in memory

Certainly do not think Cam age should even be in the running here fitbMVP, she's been ejected twice, suspended in the season, and had that many techs , how can you reward behaviour like that with awards
It makes a mockery of the league

Being suspended makes it harder to win the award as you don't get votes in the games you miss.

Its an mvp award, not the best and fairest.

Michael Jordan won 6 mvp awards and isn't a 'great guy' or a 'nice person'.

* edit Jordan won 5 mvp awards (6 nba finals mvps)...

Yeah I tracked it a week ago, as MVP I can't see how it isn't Cambage or Batkovic again, they had too many games where they were clear #1.

Top 10:

1. Suzy Batkovic 117 votes
2. Liz Cambage 104 votes
3. Courtney Williams 95 votes
4. Asia Taylor 85 votes
5. Sami Whitcomb 82 votes
6. Steph Blicavs 57 votes
=7.Jenna O'Hea 55 votes
=7. Abby Bishop 55 votes
8. Jen Hamson 54 votes
9. Nicole Seekamp 52 votes

As I'd expected a very clear top 5 and could just about pull the following 5 out of a hat. IMO Snell, Kunek, George and Novosel would've been thereabouts too for those spots 6-10. It's pretty damn impressive that O'Hea came in at 7th given her injury mid-season.

After watching how the wnbl playoffs have played out it seems a little silly that Kalani Purcell wasn't top 2 in defensive player of the year voting.
