Boti: The short shelf life of the public spray

Boti has an article today about the effectiveness of coaching outbursts:

ANDREW Gaze's public rage and outburst at his Sydney Kings during the second quarter on Saturday against Adelaide has been the subject of much debate - to spray or not spray.

In this day and age, it does seem to be getting somewhat antiquated but let's not be too coy here, every coach has a spray (or two) in their strategic arsenal.

It just has to be strategic and strategically used, not an off-the-cuff loss of emotional control, which Gaze's on-court outburst in his Kings' huddle did appear to be.

Andrew is Andrew. He has always been that way, from coaching his son in Under 12s all the way through to under 16s, to Youth League, to BigV and to SEABL. It is just now there are more eyes and more cameras. Nothing new to many of us. In fact he can be worse at practice.

Correct, it's nothing new. It is an issue, however, and exactly what Boti was alluding to: Gaze's players have largely tuned him out because he has too much to say and is overly emotional.

They're the ones riding every play and riding every call, thinking every single thing makes this huge difference.

Boti hit the nail on this one. If you call this behaviour as normal, "its just me and how I roll" mindset, then its time for a career change and probably not into professional poker. If you don't get it then don't bother, you're wasting everyone's time. Shameless.

Everything worked for Andrew as a player. Now he is being truly challenged for the first time in his life with adversity and he doesn't know how to handle himself.

Agreed this is what has been his nail in the coffin... His last spray, while fun to watch and completely deserved at the time, was just an example of his absolutely losing the plot... Newls' early hand in to just get it done, which only served to make the situation worse and Gazes' reaction to it wouldn't have gone unnoticed and only served to sour his relationship with the team...

The other big sprayers all have had pretty bad ones, but we have never seen Joey, Fearney or Gleeson absolutely lose their minds... And even sometimes when their team looks to have deserved a spray, they've come at them rationally and with a plan... The difference is that it's been proven that Gaze DOESN'T have a plan, he doesn't know what he's doing and each game that he persists with this crap, he is destroying his legacy as one of Australia's greatest ever players...

Really interesting article from Boti.

My experience is players will cop a spray, and many even welcome it, if they feel it is warranted because their effort has been poor.

When the team is losing because they don't have the answers and coach is spraying them instead of providing those answers, the players switch very quickly.

Gaze lost his players a long time ago, but the spray on the weekend was warranted and his team pulled their finger out immediately after and showed much greater effort on d-trans, which was the issue in question.

Common knowledge in league circles is that Newley either wants out or wants major changes. If there are no changes he's going to push to move on, even if he is on contract and it’s doubtful no other team would be able to match his current salary.

I don’t see any way Van Groningen can sell the idea of Gaze returning after this debacle. He may be a master of spin, but it’s hard to spin facts like one of the worst seasons in franchise history and a disfunctional squad led by a guy who was never cut out to be a head coach. Fans have already said on social media they won’t be renewing their season tickets if Gaze is back for a third go-around.

Joey has a proven record and the respect of his players AS A COACH... Gaze's players don't have any such coach to buy into...

That's certainly not a surprise... Newls' body language has been rotten for most of the season... Thing is though, he's come in with a high price tag and for the most part, either due to Gaze's coaching or not, for the most part, he hasn't delivered... Someone of his skill level should have been able to succeed almost despite Gaze's coaching, but he's been sullen, gone missing in a lot of games and just a general sook a lot of the time as well...

I've said all along that if he doesn't pull a "going overseas" trick to get out of his final contract season, I'll be super shocked...

It's been problem from day one, DEFENCE, and Blanchfield hasn't fixed that probably made it worse if you see how Moller defends under Vickerman. Ellis is a good offensive player but not as good last years four man ( name forgotten)Newley and Lisch are the only two that defend with any substance and no how, re the rumours of him wanting to leave, you don't win matches with two defenders especially with Lisch injuries.
Gaze is a great person, and possibly can coach in my opinion but has been let down by the mates act, jvg and those he puts around him probably including some players. This could all end very badly which would be sad for someone who has been a champion of the game.

So, did Andrew get this from his Mum's side? I've seen video of her absolutyely going off when she was in the stands. Don't recall Lindsay doing it so much eiher as a spectator nor coach.

Teams should pay Boti to write about their own team eg "team x can't possibly make the playoffs".

It would increase the teams chances of making the playoffs ten fold.
