How will a full strength Boomers use Simmons?

Would seem to be a no brainer that he runs the point on current form, but is that going to work for the Boomers having a 6'10 PG? Is his best fit at the 4? His shot would seem to suggest that he would need to be a point forward, rather than the currently favoured stretch 4. The 4 spot does seem to be a weaker area. What's our best lineup?

1. Delly
2. Patty
3. Ingles
4. Simmons
5. Baynes

The Sixers Cavs game today would give you a pretty good idea on how he should be deployed. Spent a lot of time of LeBron on both sides of the ball. Had shooters in redick, belinelli and covington with him and then a big man in Johnson or Holmes manning the middle. Worked pretty well today. A lineup of Mills, Broekhoff, Ingles and Baynes potentially with Simmons seems to be a good one on paper

A lot of multiple position players in possible 2019 Boomers team.
I see Simmons starting at 4 spot but sharing point guard duties with Dellavedova and Exum.
Mills and Ingles might play a bit there too.
Dellavedova
Mills
Ingles
Simmons
Baynes

With Broekhoff, Bolden and Exum playing key minutes off the bench.

I agree with #715. Simmons starting at PG allows Patty to be more of a scorer in line with his natural game. It makes sense to put Broekhoff and Ingles next to him for spacing, we'd still be really big with that lineup on the court. I would rather start Broekhoff than Bolden for a) shooting and b) rotations.

Rotationally, I think there would also be downsides to starting Bolden, given how thin our front-court depth is. There's no compelling backup for Baynes, and it's hard to project him playing 30 mins/game because of foul trouble and an inability to guard more mobile front-court players. If we assume Maker can turn in something valuable in 10 mins/game, and that probably drops to 5-7 minutes against top-tier competition, we're looking at 10 minutes a game with no true centre on the floor. Bolden is the logical nominal centre in those minutes.

So the lineups we see most of are:
Simmons/Mills/Ingles/Broekhoff/Baynes
Delly/Exum/Ingles/Simmons/Bolden
The swtichability of that second group is pretty enticing

Yeah it's a great "problem" for the Boomers to have, given that the front court isn't really our strength right now. His ability to play defence against a big while still doing his thing with the ball fits in really well with the other international-calibre personnel we have. As does Ingles' new outside shooting ability. Great weapons to be adding.

Makers time has reduced all year to where he now just sits on the bench, bit early still to call a bust but seems to have not put any weight or improved, could be an age thing. Bolden has done very well in the top euro competition.

^ exactly. Bolden trending up, Maker trending down. All just assumptions, as Bolden may ultimately follow the same trajectory as Maker and struggle to realise what currently looks like impressive potential but given our front court we have to hope he keeps going the right way.

I think a "Small" ball lineup of

PG: Dellevadova
SG: Mills
SF: Simmons
PF: Ingles
C: Baynes

Bench:
Exum
Bolden
Thon Maker
Broekoff
Newley
Goulding
Bogut or Mathiang

This could work i believe, Obviously those positions are Fluid and Simmons would be a PG for most Possessions, but with that amount of shooting around Simmons, the Offense could really put some pressure on a lot of teams.

Bringing Exum and Bolden as first two off bench could give us a few different looks depending on match up.

My understanding is that as Simmons has already represented Australia as a junior he can't represent another country. I'm not sure if that's 100%, or if there are avenues to changing your allegiance.

I can't wait to see Simmons on the Boomers. We have plenty of good shooters to surround him with and enough rebounding, defence and size to compete with every team now. After Simmons, I think Baynes, Ingles and Mills have all earned starting spots. With Simmons running the poInt, I don’t think there’s any need to have Delly out there as a starter. Broekhoff continues to shoot the 3 and rebound well in Europe, so he’d be my final starter.

I’m hoping Bogut can still give us solid minutes as Baynes backup and I think a combination of Bolden and Maker can soak up the rest of the minutes.

Watching the way Exum is playing since he returned for the Jazz, I think he can be a real X factor for us in 2019. He can be brought off the bench to attack second string guards with his speed and length but against teams with wings that are too athletic for Broekhoff, he is tall enough to give us another option. This allows us to keep Ingles at the two and also avoids Simmons having to do it.

The last two spots probably won’t get much time, but I actually think Creek would be good insurance as a third athletic wing if Broekhoff and Exum get in foul trouble. Goulding would be a good option as 12th man because of his shooting.

Just behind Creek you could look at McCarron and if Maker doesn’t perform in camp, it’s not out of the question that Motum could nick his spot.

In a few years time -

PG: Exum, Dellevadova, Wigness
SG: Mills, Green, Broekoff
SF: Ingles, Broekoff, Adel
PF: Simmons, Bolden,
C: Bogut, Baynes, Maker

Obviously changes depending on how guys develop. Adel might not be up to it, Maker may continue his trajectory as a bust, who knows how ready Wigness/Green are for the challenge, whether Bogut's done or not.

But that 1st unit, Simmons functions as the PG, you've got 2 elite shooters on the wing, Exum can guard the opposition 2 while Mills the opposition 1, Bogues the man in the middle.

Maybe you skew the lineups so that Exum plays more with the 2nd unit to create more, I think whoever out of Bolden or Maker progresses the most gets a lot of run at the 5 to give the team more spacing.

The team actually fits super well, you've got lots of strong defense, lots of shooting and off-ball guards to play off Simmo, and got the size to match up big and protect the rim when necessary. Athletic, built for a fast pace, plenty of young athletic guards coming through, and in the half-court there's plenty of great passers and high IQ players.

Is Thon making the side as much as a lock as some are assuming? Motum is having a really good year in Europe and offers a little more in the international game. I know Maker is in the NBA but he isn't playing a lot and hasn’t really showed anything that’s too appealing. All I can see him offering at this stage is a big that can rest Baynes for periods with a few fouls to give. We don’t need his shooting with guys like Mills, Delly, Ingles and Broekhoff all on the list. He isn’t an elite defensive big ala Baynes, hasn’t shown an ability to pass like Bogut and he doesn’t rebound much. Even Landale could fit better in this team for balance.

I haven't seen anyone mention Cam Bairstow on these lists, it would be great if he could get back on court and his extra Olympics experience could be valuable during training camp.

I'd also love to see McCarron at training camp, as mentioned above the man needs experience and it's a shame that he isn't in commonwealth game getting extra international experience (moreso with Lemanis play calling than with the competition).

I'd like to see Simmons play as more of a 4, at the Sixers he lets TJ McConnell have more ball handling responsibility and I could see Delly having that role. Simmons being main playmaker is a terrific Plan B and if it's not as tiring for Simmons doing it that way then he should be fresher to take over games in the 4th

stats don't look to good for Philly when you have TJ at the point and Simmons at pf.

I find it crazy how posters are saying.. take it out of bens hands and let Delly or Exum run the point.
A guy that's 4th in the NBA in assists... can see over the defense... has the best handles of the 3.. and is the most disruptive on defense... and likes to drive and dish to shooters all around... reddick(mills), covington(ingles) saric(bolden)

I'm with you '998. Seems a no-brainer to use Simmons in the exact way the 76ers are now. You know, the 14-0 streak, getting results against NBA teams, 76ers.

He's a generational talent. At PG, he has as much influence on the game as he can get, so play him there, regardless of potentially being short a big. Two three point specialists in Ingles and Broekhoff are perfect alongside him - one's a top-shelf shooter in the NBA and the other in Europe. Mills or Delly beside Simmons and the other on the bench.

Also a possibility...

Simmons
Ingles
Broekhoff
Bolden
Baynes

Mills bringing the spark off the bench at sg with Exum at the point.

Seems odd I know because mills has been exceptional in international tournaments but having 6'7 Broekhoff guarding pfs (if you have mills in the lineup over bolden), players like jokic and Davis are going to have there way, and even if you switch simmons with Ryan on the defensive end he doesn't have the foot speed or agility to defend guards.

I'd expect it comes down to chemistry in warmups and practice, but I see sense to have elite shooters, such as Ingles and Broekhoff, combining with Simmons. The question is whether we add a stretch 4 or another guard to this lineup.

Mills has always been an impactful sub, so there is no imperative for him to start. The impact and influence of Delly and Bogut shouldn't be forgotten, as their influence were the keys to the Rio success, but if they happen to anchor our second unit, we should really be able to spread minutes out.

If Simmons primarily runs point, Delly must take those responsibilities when Simmons is resting.

I think Philly has shown that the key to success with Simmons is to let him run point, penetrate at will, and surround him with as many shooters as possible.

Jonah Bolden is a terrific defender and can hit the three-ball. Brock Motum is a flat out scorer who can stretch D's with his three-point shooting, but is not a great defender.

Both would thrive playing alongside Simmons.

The 4 spot is the biggest question mark for me. With Baynes and Bogut at 5, there are no absolute standouts to me at the 4.
Bolden seems like the prototype nba stretch 4 is likely the 3rd big, with Motum, maker or even like Nick Kay could get a look.
If they take 5 bigs Kay is super efficient, stretches the floor and is always in the right spot. Comfortably our best performer at the com games imo.

Defense? That's the exciting thing about this Boomers team. Nearly all of the core are excellent defenders.

Simmons has gone from being a somewhat lazy defender in college to an elite defender in the NBA; Ingles has been one of the best defenders on a strong defensive Utah team; Baynes actually leads the NBA in defensive rating; Bogut is being underrated in this thread now because he is homeless, but I expect that he will remain an excellent rim protector; Mills can be a defensive pest; Delly is no slouch at the defensive end; Broekhoff could arguably have strong enough defense to be a 3 and D guy in the NBA; and while Exum's emergence offensively has been recent, his D has been strong since his rookie year. All backcourt players mentioned are good to excellent 3-point shooters (except arguably Exum) while being good to excellent defenders.

I forgot to mention that the reason why there was so much talk about shooters is that the topic was about how Simmons would be used. Simmons will function better on a lineup with several perimeter threats.
