Premier League zones?

How come a vast majority of teams are going with a zone the entirety of games? Obviously it's a tactic to get wins, but previously teams would only go zone as a change-up. Is it because coaches don't trust individuals defence or it seems referees are protecting the offensive player too much so a zone is best way to combat it?
Either way it doesn't look pretty and isn't really helping young players learn individual defence.

Zone is much better than playing a man to man simply because teams have about 8 offences or so for a man and only 2 for a zone
