The Legacy of Dwight Howard?

With the agreed upon trade of Charlotte sending Dwight Howard to Brooklyn for Timofey Mozgov, two future 2nd round picks and cash you have to start to wonder about his legacy?

I remember people raved about this guy coming straight out of high school to the pros but I think that really hurt him his lack of maturity and an offensive game really needed to go to college to develop. Since getting to the Finals one time with the Magic he's bounced around from the Lakers to Houston to Atlanta to Charlotte and now Brooklyn.

Mozgov has 2 years $33M left on his contract, Howard has 1 year $24M left. Mitch Kupchak certainly loves him some Mozgov. The trade will be official July 6th.

The worst thing Dwight ever did was leave the Magic. It has become a downward spiral ever since culminating in what Bill Simmons calls the Dwightbola virus.

There are just so many stories of teammates being frustrated with him that come out after he leaves each team. He doesn't seem to have the drive to push himself to improve or learn plays or go at 100%, and has too many crutches/excuses - apparently humour is a significant one.

Maybe it works (as said, with the Magic) when you're leading a team in the middle tier, but not when your franchise and teammates are trying to develop past making the finals, and actually troubling the contenders.

Read this the other day.

should never have left Orlando, he's been irrelevant since the debacle in LA

It's easy to say he should never have left in hindsight, but at the time his team mates were Jameer Nelson, Hedo Turkoglu, and a young JJ Reddick. That wasn't going to cut it against the top Western teams let alone LA.

He felt he hit the ceiling there, fair call, but ended up perhaps not the right call.

Legacy is of someone with a crazy natural ability but refused to work hard enough on the rest of his game, or play a style that maximised his existing skills.

I don't think lack of college was the issue, he just doesn't seem to have the hoops iq or inner drive

A lazy player who managed to win three DPOY awards with eight straight All Star thrown in for good measure.

Crazy how good he could have been.

Let's be fair all reports out of Charlotte was he was a great team mate and everyone loved him. He had an absolute beast of a season. The best he has had since his Orlando days. Charlotte are going to rebuild through youth and the draft. I think Kemba, Batum will probably be fine also. Brooklyn will be s good fit for D12 he will be able to mentor Jarret Allen.

But if you're not competitive enough to be a cog in a contending team, just stay put, pretend you're superman and get paid. Then get moved on as teams decide they're entering a window, realise you're a poor piece, and want to give it a real crack. If you're going to move of your own volition to pursue a championship and some sort of legacy, then put in the effort.

In his peak statistical Magic season, he had Ryan Anderson, Arenas, Carter, Duhon, Gortat, Rashard Lewis, Nelson, Pietrus, Redick, J-RIch, Q-Rich, Turk and Jason Williams. 8 of those guys averaged double figures. A mish-mash for sure.

Woody, others have already said it, but you must be reading something far removed from everyone else about his last season. Apparently some teammates applauded audibly when the trade news came through.

Well the Nets have given up on Howard in record time.

I think he will be in for a shock when he's not presented with a big money offer after July 6th.

This might sound like a dumb question, but why would the nets trade for Howard only to buy him out, while Charlotte traded for Mozgov only to buy him out. Why didn't both teams just buy out their original player and not bother with the trade?

I'm not sure if the Hornets are buying out Mozgov but the Hornets want to avoid paying the luxury tax next season which Howard's contract would've done and the Nets wanted to get out from the second year of Mozgov's deal so they have enough cap space to make a run at two max free agents in 2019. The Hornets also had them throw in a couple of future 2nd rounders and some cash too.

Howard's selfishness is also on display through his use of Stickum on his hands and the ball. When he was caught, he thought it was nothing and didn't understand why it was controversial.

Now Washington have given up on him after one season trading him to Memphis who are immediately giving up on him by waiving him.

Career over?

Outside of Lakers' desperation (and that bridge has probably been burnt anyway), it might be career over.

Averaged 16 and 12 two seasons ago then only played 9 games last season. Would be a very good pick up for a contender.
