Makes the Huskies name look amazing in comparison.

Phoenix also suggests they're going to try to use the whole resurrection of former teams narrative...but isn't that United's thing?

Kind of hoping the announcement is to spruik the signing of Spudee from Brisbane.

This is great.

Excellent time to be involved in basketball.

New NBL team coming..

Crowds and tv audiences growing..

Boomers v USA in Melbourne next year..

9 Aussies in the NBA..

Luka Doncic..

Let's hope more and more Aussie kids take up playing the best game on the planet

I do like the Phoenix. You could go crazy with the red and yellow colours too. I know they were Melbourne Tigers, but there's no-one running around in the NBL with those colours. Of course if they (whoever has the copyright to Melbourne Tigers) says their colours are red and yellow, you say Phoenix are yellow and red....

Actually the marketing potential for Phoenix is massive!

Imagine red and yellow clappers like flames. The MC could go crazy with all sorts of stunts like "the rise". The cheerleaders with all the streamers.

NBL teams need to think about the merch.

Should be the Magic, that still has a world of merchandising options and its unique to basketball as opposed to Phoenix which is both netball and soccer

Yeah, underwhelming. Has anyone done an interview with the "owner"?? Yeah, NO. Has anyone seen the "owner" in Australia? NO.

You want them to be original but also be the name of a previous South East melbourne team?

Are they going to be based at Phoenix Park??

And whatever happened to the Wellington Phoenix? Last I heard there were talks of relocating them, to South Melbourne!?!

Are they going to claim the history of any of the previous teams?
If they were to claim Saints, Magic, and Dragons, that would be what 5 rings?

Should have gone with Huskies and bought the tassie IP

It's not like tassie have a real shoot at the NBL but they appear to be better runanage than the new SE Melb team

Can i hate them already based on their name alone? Suggested new nicknames: The A-League Wellingtons, The netballers, The vixens, The Shitnames, the unoriginals.

Some really stupid decisions being made wth the names of teams in recent years.

United, Lynx, Phoenix

Already have magic with Orlando.
Dragons not used by any big teams.

S.E dragons was the best choice and the right colours to match.

Dragons are a well established NRL team. I believe in American pro sports (i.e. hockey, nba, mlb, nfl) only two teams share the same nickname.

Could someone explain why it's so important that NBL teams not use the same names as NBA ones?
Does the NBA 'own' those names, so that they'll take us to court for using them?

We should call our teams whatever we like, and the NBA can go take a flying f*ck as far as I'm concerned.

I was longing for the Titans.

Phoenix is fine really, green will be interesting how they do it, they should look at the simple Celtics designs when trying to do things like jerseys.

Would have been ridiculous having another red team imo. Variety is the spice of life and Perth, Illawarra capture the red market, Adelaide Brisbane NZ got shades of blue, Cairns orange and Sydney purple. Green is the next obvious solution really

Ive never liked the name Magic. A pretty wierd name for a sports team. Orlando use it because of the city's connection to Disney world, but for Melbourne, its a strange name. Going with something new (not Magic and reinstalling an old franchise) is the right move.

Phoenix is an interesting choice, rise from the ashes (even though its a brand new club) makes it a bit confusing, though it has a greek connection, maybe tying in with Melbournes greek community - in a similar way to the Celtics connection to Boston's Irish community? Don't really know, just looking for a reason... i dont mind it.

I realise it might have leaked, but it might have been smart to get their IP sorted first?
Especially given the history!

Who was it that said the definition of insanity is repeating something but expecting a different result?
At the very least it would be nice to think they could actually come up with a fucking original idea. Cos I'm not sure what's changed (if anything) from when MU tried it?
Netball still own the IP to "Melbourne Phoenix"

Are they thinking that the addition of "S.E." will avoid the problem?
I don't see how? If "Melbourne United Phoenix" was rejected, I don't see how
"S.E. Melbourne Phoenix" solves the problem?
Maybe if they just went for "S.E.M."?
