In this age of gen y parents giving kids atrociously spelled names I think it would have been way more "lit" to call the team the Feenyx

Well, no other team has green in the NBL.

There is the Melbourne Phoenix in netball...Wellington Phoenix in A-League soccer.

Can appreciate the Phoenix name as a resurrection of all the former teams to play in the NBL from the SE corridor, but I kind of thought something new would have been more apt.

They should be named after an iconic Australian animal, maybe the Numbats or the Possums.

Green is a good choice in that no other team currently has it.
Will stand out.

After the election, won't a lot of Melbourne be Green anyway? Is the NBL trying to get the Green voters to support them?

Boohoo, so what colours then. Black, red, blue, orange, Lakers purple/yellow are taken. Bbl seems to be doing well in terms of teams having wide variety of colours, even pink, and most don't align with traditional state colours.

I'd say a grey would be good. It’s a colour you can wear any day without standing out too much. Maybe a Grey and a flufo yellow colour

I actually quite like the colours, name and logo. But I can understand how you might be disappointed if you were a Magic or Tigers fan and were hoping for a revival. Its Melbourne United that's f#cked it up really. They've taken the Tigers franchise, made it sound like an A-League club and stolen the dark colour of the old Magic teams. If I lived in Melbourne I'd get behind the Phoenix over United for sure!

I guess this team is the first to form from the NBL ashes pre-LK. Maybe the name is just a giant pisstake in that regard

It's unfortunate that United effectively stole the dark monotone that was the signature of the Magic, and I do think they have missed an opportunity in not resurrecting the Magic brand.

That said, I understand the message they are conveying with "Phoenix".

Green's ok, although I don't think it meshes well with the name, but then few team colours really do. As others have said, no other team features Green in any way, so it does give then the opportunity to really own that colour, create their own "Green Army" etc.

Will be could to see cross-town rivalry return to Melbourne.
Will there be doomsday doubles for visiting teams?

The reason why other teams dont have green is because its not a very nice colour. They are going to have to do extremely well to make their brand popular with green jerseys. Not that it cant be done.
My main concern is that theyv'e chosen Phoenix when we already have soccer and netball teams in australia. I dont care so much about the names of american teams that is irrelevant to the australian market i think
