Illawarra v New Zealand Jan 18

Last time they met, New Zealand were all over Illawarra at Hamilton like a Gilette razor on a soy-boy's face. I would have said a feminist's armpit, but I don't think razors go there.

Long was in full beast mode and single handedly tore the Hawks apart.

Although both these teams are holding hands with Cairns in the bottom half of the table, both teams are kinda still in the hunt. Sure, they have to win essentially all their remaining games, and hope results go their way, but the chances of that are about as great as a white knight getting out of the friend-zone.

Back to the game at hand. Illawarra do play well at home, but there is something about this Hawks teams that is missing. When Bevo was standing over his witch's cauldron pre-season preparing his brew, the assistant coaches stirring the cauldron anti-clockwise for the best result, it is almost like he forgot to add the pinch of newt. New Zealand have been inconsistent IMHO and dropped games they should have won and won games they shouldn't have. Their run and gun game has been hit and miss this season.

It's been a crazy second half of the season, but when it comes down to it, while the Breakers will do their best to out-shoot and out-run the Hawks, the Hawks at home just seem to squeeze the lemon in games they need too to make games competitive.

New Zealand by 3 in a low scoring slugfest.

New Zealand's run home means that a win tonight would leave them well and truly in the hunt for a top 4 spot.

5 games (including tonight) vs Cairns and Illawarra- two teams that NZ have beaten by double digits in every meeting so far this season.

Set up to be a great contest. Both teams should be up. Both teams need to win, both for the ladder points and momentum. Even the bitterest of the avocado imports has to step up and contribute, because finals are on the line.

Gotta say, it's too hard to pick.

X Factor for Illawarra= Naar and Grida, because the young guns could win this one.
X factor for NZ= Ili and Delaney, same reason.

OR

X factor for Illawarra= Andersen and Jackson, because veteran compose could win this one
X factor for NZ= Wesley and Abercrombie, same reason.

On second thoughts...

A good game by Shaun would go a Long way towards an NZ win.

I'm feeling good because whenever everyone feels confident that NZ should win, they drop their bundle & underperform.

So this one has that same smell!

Perhaps each could be the X factor for the other team.

Both young. Learning. Gotta expect some mistakes.

Probably, it's not very structured. Especially compared to Euroball.

Yeah euroleague mainly, so you can understand why I'm quite in shock when 10 shoots are taken per minute.

Commentators "Kevin White pass first but can shoot the 3"

No he can't. He is one of the worst 3 point shooters in the league and has been for many years. Mr 17% should not be shooting the ball!!!

Delaney could be the next superstar of this league IMO.

Just needs the minutes he deserves. You never see him have a bad cameo. His PER/40MPG must be insane.

Agree on Delaney. Rare Abercrombie positive contribution tonight, because otherwise I think this shoudl have been the year Finn stole his starting role.

WTF was that from Tai. Iso pull up 3? Breakers closing this out like they'd rather some extra vacation time at the end of the season rather than sneak into the top 4.

Not starting weeks at the beginning of the second was odd. Spent 5 mins on the bench. Didn't lose them the game i guess

What happened in the 4th? No heart. No leadership

Still.think the balance of this team is stuffed. He needs to decide is it Richard or is it Webster.

Poor games from long and wesley. But no depth at the 4 or 5. Means no options and that they can only play zone.

Meanwhile the logjam at 2 and 3 and no one gets on a roll

That's the kind of win that brings a tear to the eye.

Steel city, low budget, working their fucking asses off and getting rewarded for it. Crowd so into it, seem to be gathering momentum locally. It is becoming a team you wouldn't want to play no matter who you are. Too good. So hype

Not a good sign for Breakers if they shoot that well from deep and still lose.

Haven't seen a team pick apart a zone so well all season. Some of that ball movement was perfection. Only eight turnovers too

Also glad to see that Ced sat for the remainder of the game after chucking a wobbly midway through the third.

That move likely was the difference between winning and losing

Webster is the Dion Waiters of the NBL. Needs the ball in his hands constantly, can't play off ball or feature in a passing offence.

Does Adelaide's signing of Shaun Bruce keep Cedric employed for 1 more month. Is this Naar's team already?

Hawks, like the Sixers the night before, were fun to watch.

Funnily enough, Cedric had 6 assists, 0 turnovers and was Illawarra's leading +/- guy at 3/4 time, he had played well.

But Beveridge was spot on in punishing that outburst, he should have done that earlier in the season. There have been reasons for leeway, but that leeway shouldn't have been extended into game time for mine, could have fixed the issue much quicker.

They should've cut Ced early it was obvious throughout the preseason games that he was done. I can't see him getting another opportunity in the NBL after this season.
