Big Trade - Curry a Knick

AP - The Bulls agreed to trade center Eddy Curry to the New York Knicks on Monday, ending a contentious negotiation in which Chicago insisted the restricted free agent take a DNA test over a heart problem.

Chicago also sent veteran center Antonio Davis to the Knicks, who traded away forwards Tim Thomas, Michael Sweetney and Jermaine Jackson. Several draft choices also changed hands in the deal, according to an executive in the Eastern Conference who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The trade was expected to be finalized Tuesday.

In making the announcement, an obviously frustrated Bulls general manager John Paxson did not specify what Chicago got in return and did not field questions.

"We will have an announcement tomorrow morning," Bulls public relations director Sebrina Brewster said Monday night. "All we can say right now is we traded Eddy to the Knicks."

Knicks spokesman Jonathan Supranowitz said the team declined comment on Paxson's announcement. [READ]

Bulls Send Center Eddy Curry to Knicks
DEERFIELD, Ill. - The Bulls agreed to trade center Eddy Curry to the New York Knicks on Monday, ending a contentious negotiation in which Chicago insisted the restricted free agent take a DNA test over a heart problem.

The Bulls had insisted that Curry take a DNA test to determine whether he's susceptible to a potentially fatal heart problem. Curry, who missed the final 13 games of the regular season and the playoffs after experiencing an irregular heartbeat, balked, saying it violated his privacy.

"I would never put a player on the floor in a Chicago Bulls uniform if I didn't do everything in my power to find out all the information that was available," Paxson said. "You can debate genetic testing 'til you're blue in the face. But from what I know, from what I've learned over the last six months, that test could have helped us determine the best course of action."

Curry, drafted right out of high school, averaged a career-high 16.1 points in his fourth NBA season.

The standoff stemmed from a benign arrhythmia that caused Curry to miss the final 13 games of the regular season and the playoffs.

Several prominent cardiologists cleared Curry to play, but Barry Maron, a world-renowned specialist in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, suggested the DNA test.

Paxson has said he understands the privacy issues involved but insisted the Bulls do not have an ulterior motive; they simply do not want a situation similar to those of former Boston Celtics guard Reggie Lewis or Loyola Marymount star Hank Gathers players with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy who collapsed and died.

Paxson, speaking during the team's media day, told reporters the Bulls had offered Curry $400,000 annually for the next 50 years if he failed the genetic test.

"So he would have an above-average lifestyle that would put him in a position that most other people aren't in," Paxson said. "Our intention through that whole process was to show him that we did care about him and that we were concerned about his well-being."

Trade rumors involving Curry had heated up over the past week, and the Knicks were said to be willing to take on Curry without making him submit to a DNA test.

His acquisition gives the Knicks two new centers to begin the season after free agent Jerome James was signed to a five-year, $30 million deal in the offseason.

Sweetney had been slated to be New York's starting power forward, and Thomas was expected to start at small forward. The Knicks now have an added measure of depth along their front line, and the departure of Thomas could clear the way for newly acquired guard Quentin Richardson to see some minutes at small forward.

Curry's agent, Leon Rose, did not return calls seeking comment Monday.

Paxson said he resented insinuations that the Bulls were on a sort of witch hunt, trying to find information on Curry.

The general manager started by asking reporters to "let me ramble a minute." After a long pause, he said, "This has been about as uncomfortable and unusual a situation I could ever imagine. We've attempted from Day 1 to do the right thing, and I'm absolutely confident that we have in every way we went about it. And in a lot of ways we've met resistance in trying to gather all the information we feel we need."

About three minutes later, Paxson said, "From a basketball standpoint, I understand what I'm doing. But I have an obligation to this organization and the people I work for to do the right thing. And I did the right thing. That's all I've got to say."

Then, he walked away from the table.

That Curry and the Bulls parted was not shocking, given the tone of the negotiations.

Curry played a major role as the Bulls won 47 games and reached the playoffs for the first time since 1998 when Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen led them to their sixth NBA title.

"It's tough," said power forward Tyson Chandler, who re-signed with the Bulls for six years during the offseason. "I'm sad to see him go."

Let's get this straight: an employer offers an employee $400K a year for 50 years, just for sitting a test? That's like...*four times five, add zeroes*...$20 million.

I might go and tell my boss I have a heart problem, but that I'm willing to have a DNA test to sort it out and see what offer I can get.

And surely the Bulls realise they're getting duped with Jermaine Jackson? I mean, sure, he can obviously sing and dance, and he was good with the Jackson Five and everything - but how old would he be now? Can he even hoop?

Tim Thomas is a great fit for the Bulls. Chandler was a better centre than curry last year, he defends and he rebounds hard, he doesn't have to put up numbers, but with more court time he'll probably put up 10ppg. They have enough offense to handle it without him especially now with Thomas.

Do you really think Tim Thomas is a coup for the Bulls. He got his payday with the Bucks after one decent season, he sucked as a Knick.. and as a 76er as well.

I don't think this is good for the Bulls, Thomas is a sook about playing time, plus they are already good at the swing positions. The only thing that Thomas offers the Bulls is salary cap from next season when his crazy contract comes of the books...

I agree with the Chandler comment, he averaged 7.6 ppg and 7.9 bpg last season, I think he could average a double-double next season with time.

thomas will b servicable at sf for the bulls this yr, his contract then expires and they can sign and trade him or let him go. By then Deng and nocioni will be a great tandem at sf for the bulls for yrs to come. Sure they lost a talent in curry but he has health concerns and above all is not guarenteed to reach his potential with his notoriously bad attitude. They get Michael Sweetney who is an excellent rebounder, Chandler who they resigned for multiple yrs gets a chance to contribute. They also signed malik allen and darius songalia to go with antonio davis and othella harrington. Not a bad front court...they still have hinrich, gordon, deng, nocioni, and duhon. Although they would have liked to keep curry they did everythin they could to do so, and in the end had to settle for a trade in which they get some good players and draft picks.

Although the knicks take on another big contract (although they got rid of thomas's') they now won't have to rely on jerome james at centre which is a big relief for them. Q-rich can move to sf which frees up mins for houston and nate robinson off the bench. Also trevor ariza can continue to develop at sf. If curry stays healthy they've definately improved their roster.

As a Bull man, I'm happy. When (and let's hope it DOESN'T happen) Curry dies, Paxson will look like a genius.

Curry's crazy. He should take the test in private (maybe he already has). Your life is much more important than basketball and if it's gonna kill ya, you're better off taking the $20 mill.

there is a big issue here with Curry setting a precedent for future cases.

He had been cleared by prominent heart doctors. Just like Isaacs gattaca example, if he were to get DNA tested, the implications for future years could destroy sport as we know it...

Luol Deng is already better than Tim Thomas. I'd probbly take Nocioni over Thomas aswell.

The Bulls get about 20mil worth of cap space at the end of the year and 2 picks, the Knicks get Curry, who is a risk but one they can afford to take. Its not as if they care about their financial status anyway.

TR - have you seen Gattaca?

Tagline: There Is No Gene For The Human Spirit.
Plot Outline: Futuristic story of a genetically imperfect man and his seemingly unobtainable goal to travel in space.
Good film, stunning titles (IMO) and worth watching.

The main character, Ethan Hawke, was not "pre-ordered" by his parents and was born "inferior" with a chance of heart failure by a certain age. Because of this, he never has an opportunity to strive beyond a janitorial position, though his dream is of space travel.

It will be one athlete asked for a DNA test this year. Without barriers, it will be compulsory for all athletes in a few years. Then it will be standard workplace practise for certain positions. Then when testing costs drop and there is more press out there so that the populace expects them, it will be standard for almost everyone. And then it will impact insurance and anyone with a slight history of something will find it harder to get a job, pay a lot more for insurance, and you could forget multi-year NBA contracts.

All because someone has a genetic inclination below the norm.

You can't test for the likelihood of getting busted for dope possession or posing in 100% Homegirls and embarrassing your team. You can't test for that reckless friend that crashes the car while you're a passenger.

It's hard to say this without sounding like a pro-lifer, but there have been some brilliant minds throughout history who were far from genetically perfect.

Isaac, it's a good movie. Nothing wrong with being an 'In-Valid'.

Sorry, but still can't see how this impacts on a restricted free agent in the NBA.

In my line of work, I have no issues with providing DNA or undergoing a DNA sample. It may actually help my cause.

DNA testing can be compared with fingerprinting 200 years ago. Now if we were talking about 'cloning' then I would agree that this could potentially hurt the NBA. Imaging cloning 3 Shaq's, 2 AI's, 2 T-MAC's, 2 Kidds, 2 KG's and 2 Lebrons for each team.

Forget free agency, will just mix up our next superstar in a petrie dish...

Anyone with a genetic imperfection will get low offers or none at all, regardless of whether that imperfection is actually going to impact their play. It will create a precedent for other sports and other industries. Clubs will sign a clean but average player before they sign a potential superstar who might have a problem at a later date.

DNA testing may help the cause of some, but not all. This is probably a bit appropriate:

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

I'll pay that......

I guess the issue comes down to 'why' the sample is being taken.

is it being taken as your a bombing victim? (refer to Sept 11, Bali x 2, Jakarta, London)

is it being taken as your deceased and can't be identified by normal means? (refer to Sept 11, Bali x 2, Jakarta, London, everyday situations)

is it being taken to eliminate you from a crimescene?

is it being taken as your a suspect in relation to a serious crime?

I have no issues with the above examples, I do agree with you now after a your recent posts that it could seriously be misused by governments and corporates.

Problem is DNA is here to stay and is advancing at an alarming rate.

How do you feel about the proposed DNA database then???

Government use is one thing (well, it should be, but I don't always trust that it is), but corporate use is a completely different story. If insurance costs are higher for an invalid, how long until the perfect pay a cheaper price for tickets or products?

Need more info about the database -- who is holding the information and for what purpose? Could be that the DNA was only able to be used for purposes of identification and not for something like leaking genetic information to a third party about an individual. i.e., company finds out and cans their CEO because he has an increased chance of heart issues.
