Allan Houston retires

Allan Houston is announcing his retirement today, sad to see another players career ended by injuries. Quite possibly one of the purest shooters to ever step on the NBA court in my opinion, could have developed into one of the top shooting guards in the league. If i was a GM id be quick to sign him up as a shooting coach

That's pretty unfortunate seeing as they didn't release him when they had the opportunity and missed out big time in recruiting another unsigned shooting guard, someone perhaps like Finley.

He should stay in New York and become Jamal Crawford's personal shooting coach, just so he can make more that 40% of his shots once in a while

"Houston joined the Knicks as a free agent in 1996 and furthered his reputation as one of the league's best shooters. He leaves as New York's fourth-leading scorer with 11,165 points and the eighth-leading Knicks scorer in the playoffs with 1,139 points. Patrick Ewing, Walt Frazier and Willis Reed are the Knicks legends ahead of Houston on the scoring list."

I didn't realise he'd done that much for New York. Gee, he cops a lot of flak for a guy who's played for so long. Typical NY.

But again, is that his fault? Everyone forgets Jon Koncak quickly (except for Cheezeburger, of course!).

The Knicks didn't release him due to the fact they saved much more by him retiring. At the end of last season Houston indicated that if he couldn't make training camp he retired for medical reasons.

If he was waived under the CBA clause then the Knicks would of had to honour the rest of his huge contract. By retiring for medical reasons, the NBA insurance provider pays 80% of the outstanding contract. Houston has $40 million outstanding on the contract, meaning the insurance company picks up $32 million, whilst the Knicks only pick up $8 mill.

Early indications seems to suggest that the Knicks could save as much as $72 million by him retiring, although it will not provide any salary cap flexibility.

Im not saying its his fault, that is just one of the major reasons. Your can't blame anyone for accepting that kind of money
