Funny Sixers top Razors for 87-73 win

It was low-scoring and ugly, but the 36ERS' 14-point win over the West Sydney Razorbacks in Adelaide was all that was required to end a five game losing streak and help strengthen the team's third position on the NBL ladder.

Brett Maher paced all scorers with 21 and added 6 assists, while Dusty Rychart managed 19 points with 10 rebounds, and Willie Farley scored 17, dished 5 assists and had 3 steals without a single turnover to his name.

West Sydney had Scott McGregor, James Taylor and Clint Reed in double figures, but failed to win a quarter in the warm conditions.

Neither team had a decisive advantage in any period, through Adelaide did get an early break through Farley and David Cooper in the first. Cooper had 7 points on his way to 11 for the game in one of his best offensive efforts in weeks.

The Razorbacks surged back to start the second term, adding a few unanswered buckets to snatch a three point lead, but Adelaide returned a stronger volley. A questionable Farley three which appeared to bounce up, off the shot-clock, and drop in was one of only four outside baskets from the team for the game.

By half-time, the Sixers had pushed to a nine point buffer despite giving up a small edge on the boards and shooting below their usual rate.

Returning after the main break, Adelaide relied primarily on Rychart's creativity and persistence in the paint (9 points for the quarter) as they weathered scores from seven individual West Sydney players. Jacob Holmes added a couple of points from the stripe in an otherwise below-average offensive performance (1-8 FG), but was reliable on the boards throughout the game.

The fourth quarter saw Adelaide coast for the duration of the game. Maher was his effortless self and Adelaide found inside options in Rychart, Cooper and Mark Nash. Nash continued his recent form, scoring 7 points for the game including 5 in the final period, and pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds in less than 24 minutes on court.

West Sydney big man, Pero Vasiljevic, collected his sixth foul and snuffed the Pigs chances. Oscar Forman, having played one of his best defensive games with four blocks, hit a long-range jumper and added the game's only dunk from a Farley feed as the Sixers ran out with the win.

Adelaide hold third spot on the NBL ladder with six games remaining, and face New Zealand and Perth in Round 20. West Sydney have now lost 14 straight to sit at the bottom of the ladder, and visit Melbourne to play the Tigers in their next game.

Adelaide 36ers 87 (Maher 21, Rychart 19, Farley 17, Cooper 11)
West Sydney Razorbacks 73 (Taylor 14, McGregor 14, Reed 12)

Someone said 4,777 in another thread.

A win's a win, but gee that was an ugly game. Won by 14 against the worst team in the league who were backing up after playing Sydney. Still, winning ugly is something for the toolchest and they've now got a break to relax for a while.

Anybody know why Paul Rees didn't get any playing time last night?

I think the crowd figure may be less than what it seemed, even though the upper section was fairly full.

Seemed a lot of the lower section had empty seats (maybe season ticket holders missing the game due to other NYE events).

Seems like some changes are needed in 2006.

There are plenty of young australian players for the SG position so maybe the money should be spend on a proper big man ?

When will the 36ers start to use their development players ? Either they are no good at all and they should not be there or they they should be given a chance to develop also on the court . Seems like the Kings are better at developing young players , maybe that is why so few young interstate talents seems to want to come to Adelaide ?

Sydney are good at developing their young players beacuse Kendall and Worthington have come straight out of college. They also have Barlow who is a reasonable player.

Agree panther lover.

Why can the 36ers not do the same ? Having said that it was good to see Hill return to the team from the AIS - but the 36ers still have too many players sitting too much time on the bench so you have to question the quality of these players or the willingness of the club to develop them .

Could it be that young players from outside of SA do not find it attractive to come to the 36ers ?

Hmm...imagine Phil putting on development players of Gerlach, Madgen or Hambour in the last 5 minutes, only to see the team get beaten...then Phil would be lambasted for running these guys.

Consider how many close games the 6ers have had at home this season, and that shows one of the many reasons why the development players dont get time. Another reason is that as soon as they take the court, they have to be paid for the game, within salary cap, so the club has to be careful there as well (I beleive their annual "wage" does not count under the cap)

Then if they are so worried regarding the salary cap, why have them. Training tools is what they are. It has been shown over the years Smyth has coached, even on blowouts, he still does not put the rookies on the court.

Not true. 2002-03, he played Oscar, Jacob and Illman regularly.

Sorry Isaac, but I beleive that there have been plenty of opportunities for these guys and others to get more time when it has been available.

They're called developement players because they are in the process of developing their game to NBL standard. They do this at training and learn from the more experienced players. It would be absolute stupidity to play them at the risk of losing the game. Yogee you make some interesting points about their annual salary not counting under the cap but time spent on court has to be paid under the cap. I was not aware of that.

In the Know, there may have been the occasional time when they could have played without risk of losing the game, but this season's percentages are very low due to the closeness of most games won so I would say that it has been important to not only win but to try and bump up the score as well.

In the Know, they haven't been played this year, I wasn't disputing that. Just saying that I wouldn't make it a Smyth blanket-call across seasons because that's an unrealistic generalisation. I would suggest that the difference is that Oscar and Jacob were players earmarked for the future (4 and 3 year deals respectively kinda hint at that), whereas I don't know if the club would have the same consideration for Hambour, Gerlach and Madgen.

Thought i might add this as food for thought about recruits and development players. Goorj has already spoken to Joe Ingles about his intentions and also of late to Schensher.

Goorj contacts all kids playing in college to offer them tryouts etc with the Kings and to basically say we may have a spot for you if things dont work out in the US.

This is a great effort from him as he is getting the awareness of the Kings to the potential newbies fresh off the farm.

The bonus to the Kings is that Worthington and Kendall are now capped at 5 points for starting with the KIngs.

Newley did not even get a phone call from the coaching staff about being a sixer according to Ian Stacker.

These are the lengths that coaches are going to to build teams.

Having said that we are really only a big man short of being a real contender.

I seem to recall a game last season against the Taipans when some development players were put on to play out a game - only for the Taipans to get up and win.

And look what happened after that.
