Nathan Jawai - potential Sixer?

Nathan Jawai - worth pursuing as a future big man for the Sixers? Here's an article.

Anyone seen him play?

19yo, 205cm, but 128kg. Currently at the AIS. Likely to head to the US for a college spot and a shot at the NBA, but could he be tempted to play in the NBL?

It is easy to see what the scouts like about him. He is only 10cm shorter than (Shaq) and almost as heavy.

While his height is not unusual in basketball - 215cm is considered the benchmark for centres in the NBA - Jawai's bulk and surprising mobility make him tough to guard under the hoop.
Word is that every NBL team has been in touch with him.

That would mean that Phil or Steve would need to pick up the phone and call somebody.

Doubt that it will happen.

Use him to replace Rees. Split minutes with Cooper or start if he moves past him.

All teams can only offer the same initial contract more or less, so it'd come down to development opportunities (which we admittedly don't have a reputation for), future roles (we could offer), and minutes (could offer).

Our local prospects for that position are Dodman (never seen him play) and Bungey (might be a year off, but I think he's good enough to try some NBL minutes now).

offer him the start, can always talk him out of rotation once he is in the team, have coops on bench. Where did he grow up? if every team is after him, he may look at home first. Cant hurt to talk to him and say we're talking with ingles and have hill, talk up the ais connection.

67305, If it was all only that easy. He is from QLD by the way. You are right, he is likely to look home first.

Bungey an NBL prospect - you've got to be kidding. The kid is probably the most un-disciplined basketball player I have ever seen, and that's not exaggerating a bit

Saw Nathan play at the Icehouse last year against the Pioneers, absolutely awesome but at that time still a little raw with shot selection and some skill work but with another year at AIS World will be his oyster.
Nathan was discovered by Timmy Duggan at Bamaga I think his first choice would be Cairns if there was a spot open.

He's a foul-prone loose cannon but the same has been said of Pero Vasiljevic and look where he is. Starting on a dud team, but hardly embarrassing himself.

Bungey's coach stays in contact with Steve Breheny (you might recognise the name).

He averaged a double-double in the ABL last year without playing all that many minutes. Also got a fair few blocks in that time too.

May 28 2005 - 25 points and 15 boards in 32 minutes against Sturt. A week earlier, 10 points and 17 boards in 16 minutes. Mar 19, 19 points and 8 boards in 22 minutes up against Dix, Farman and Newley.

Who else have we got who is a legitimate big man prospect?

I've seen Bungey play a few times and he's done well. Gets on the boards, goes for blocks and will dunk at any opportunity. He also takes and makes shots around the key.

Plus, you never know when he'll spice things up with a death threat for a referee.

That's entertainment.

lol

I was thinking the same sort of thing. We don't exactly have a great reputation for aggressive recruiting. The only non-SA guys we ever pick up are not wanted by their previous clubs and pretty much come knocking on our door. That's my impression anyway.

I was also looking at a previous thread on Aussies playing College in the US. I have mentioned Matthew Knight before, but as it was correctly pointed out he is still a junior so has another year left in college.
However, there are at least another 4 Aussies playing as Seniors in the NCAA this year that could all meet the requirments of what the 6ers are looking for. I assume that Loughton would be hoping to go back to Perth if he is going to play NBL, whereas the other 3 are all from Melbourne & even with a 2nd team from Melbourne they all couldn't fit.

Chris Cameron - 213cm 120kg
Louisiana-Lafayette
9.5 pts (@ 38%), 4.4 rebs, 1.2 assts in 30 mins pg.

Simon Conn - 208cm 112kg
Gardner-Webb
15.1 pts (@58%), 8.2 rebs, 0.7 assts in 33 mins pg.

Daniel Kickert - 210cm 108kg
St Marys
17.1 pts (@ 46%), 5.6 rebs, 0.9 assts in 33 mins pg

Alex Loughton - 208cm 108kg
Old Dominion
13.8 pts (@48%), 7.4 rebs, 1.4 assts in 29 mins pg

These guys look like they could all be options for the 6ers as future centres, with a good 4 years in US system.

Got to say that the dude in the pic (Nathan Jawai) certainly looks like Shaq in Blue Chips, it would be nice for the Australian (Sydney Kings) Boomers medal chances in a few years if he turns into half the play Shaq Daddy has.

Never heard of Conn, but Cameron was at the AIS with Jacob and Oscar, plus Crosswhite, Caporn, etc. I remember thinking that he was a bit of an oaf.

Surely you'd put solid offers to Kickert and Loughton? Both are considered future Boomers I think.

This Jawai guy seems pretty heavy on paper but in the pic doesnt really look that heavy, well not 128kgs @ 205cms anyway, are you sure thats right??

Yer on the NBL website he says that he's looking at Cairns as a back up plan.
Come on Isaac, Bungey may have a bit of talent but you need to be mentally stable to compete at a high level of sport. Without even looking majority of times he only plays 22 minutes is because he's probably in foul trouble!!!

He looks pretty heavy to me. The guy thats under him in the photo doesn't look to comfortable playing near him.

As I said in an earlier post Nathan Jawai is an indigenous Australian from Bamaga on Cape York.
He was discovered by Timmy Dugan on a health promotion tour and he lured him as a 16 year old to try out for Cairns

While on the Jawai topic, I saw it suggested that Cairns have wrapped him up for two years with an NBA out-clause. Smart. Could be that a move abroad for someone young and family-oriented could be more pressure than he wants?

hats off to you Isaac, pity we didnt grab him 2 years ago when you first raised it...would love to know if our "coaching team" chased him at all?

Well, we know where Loughton and Jawai are now. But what of Conn, Kickert and Cameron? Are they possibly on the radar for next year?

Think the chance of snatching him from Cairns would've been quite low. Probably eager to stay close to family up there and they are prone to throwing money around chasing a championship for the owner.
