Erin Phillips named to WNBL All-Star Five
Well deserved!
Phillips Named in WNBL All-Star Five Team.
15/02/2006
Erin Phillips has been named in the Price Attack Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) All-Star Five Team.
The WNBL today announced the members of this year's prestigious team, voted on by coaches, assistant coach and team captains from across the 2005/06 season.
Five of the eight Price Attack WNBL clubs were represented, and joining Drug Free Perth Lynx guard Deanna Smith on the team were Canberra Capitals veteran centre Jenny Whittle, Dandenong centre Jacinta Hamilton, exciting young guard Erin Phillips of the Adelaide Fellas, and last year's MVP and Bulleen Melbourne guard, Katrina Hibbert.
All five athletes are favourites for the WNBL Most Valuable Player award, to be announced tomorrow.
News of her inclusion in the All-Star 5 provided some comfort to Erin Phillips whose team, the Adelaide Fellas, lost the Preliminary Final to Canberra on Saturday. The 20-year-old was outstanding for Adelaide this season. She was her team's top scorer with 329 points (15.7 per game) and was also the team's most consistent free throw shooter, hitting 80% of her shots from the line. She led the League in assists (102) and led her team in steals (27).
"It's very exciting to be a part of this team and I'm very honoured," she said. "It would have felt even better to get to play in the final game this weekend of course, but we'll be back next season."
Phillips was also named in the Opals team on Sunday and will be sharing the point guard spot with veterans Jae Cross and Tully Bevilaqua.
The members of the All-Star Five will all be on hand to receive their trophies at the 2006 Price Attack WNBL Grand Final at Dandenong Basketball Stadium on 18 February.
The award is determined by a poll of the head coach, assistant coach and team captain from all WNBL teams. Voters are not allowed to vote for members of their own team.
