1 week until the season proper - ABA

As some of the teams showcased their talent at the ABA blitz (given all teams not there and players away with other commitments). What is the prediction for the finishing order of teams at the end of the season?

South last? I think you're in for a rude awakening my friend. After missing out on finals last season by 3 points to west, adding 2 new players (and losing one) with a number of juniors with another year of experience and making the silly season GF in both divs. And I heard Saps isn't playing too.

Dont think South Men will make the finals though they will battle hard
my tip would be

Forestville
West
Woodville
Sturt
Centrals
Mavs

and the girls

Forestville
West
North
Mavs
Sturt

After that it does not matter too much

I know Pilks has some hops and he will probably still grab 15 rebounds a game despite being O.S

Finkemeyer might be going to North. Is Kent still there?

Holmes will be concentrating on preparation for the Commonwealth Games, so not sure if he'll play at all.

Cooper may be off to NZ for part of the ABA season.

I think Sturt will be competitive. They have Shepherd who could well start ahead of Potsie and Hackendorf who was starting consistently last year, both possibly off the bench.

Sturt and West are playing a trial game before the season starts. Should be interesting to see how it all goes.

Takes more then 1 player at this level. I do think Amanda is a good player but she needs more around her.

i am surprised people are still tipping woodville to be near the top, even after losing tree.

i think they will still final, but won't be top 3 IMO.

At least I was game to make a prediction

i factored eastern down in the men because i don't believe holmes will play

west to be the big improvers

the men's comp looks to be the closest it has been in many a year

BRING IT ON
with the women two many star plays in too few teams makes for a lop sided comp

tony blair.

No screen, no Phillips should bring f/ville and north back to the pack.

Beatty and Cooper should bring southern back up to the pack.

where else are the stars?

Anon for the women you forgot West. Sam back in and the new girl from NSW country i think, Leslie Greiger, Cherie Smith, plus the girls from last year as in Seward, Iren, Lampshed, Jane, Truslove etc. Theu will be in the top 2. Sorry to the girls if I spelled your name wrong.

okay. west do have a great team. no real stars, but a lot of quality players.

i think both mens and womens are going to be real even this year!

I agree Hankie
however I think Forestville will be just as strong with out Screen. They still have Lindsay and Randford who will play bigger roles with screen not hogging the ball as much

well unfortunately i really don't see mavs women making it into the top 6, maybe even 7. seems like unless you have a wnbl player in the team its going to be a long season, and a lot of others have at least 2 or 3.

I do agree with you on Forestville fresh. Think you maybe a bit harsh on Sceeny there but yes Lindsay and Randford wiil step up and dont forget Duke also a very good player. Plus the other players from last year will step up as well and dont forget Newbold is also a good player.

Southern Reserves beat Eastern by 4 on the weekend - i don't know who Eastern were missing, but Southern reserves was:
Fricker
Peddle
Hodges
Warnes
Nolan
Markham
Graham
and maybe two others i've forgotten.

IMO - Can't see Eastern finishing above Southern with Beatty and Cooper in the side...?

they were missing a few good ones, possible starters too - maycock, wilcox, madgen, holmes, but not sure if that'll be enough

Maycock and Holmes played on tuesday but pickles housemate that is a bit harsh on them as over the Blitz weekend they come 4th just behind Southern and were 10 up before losing by 12 in that game.

Mr Hankie - I was there too, but you probably already know that. ;)

So it was a shortened game and Eastern lost by 12 - doesn't that mean that Southern would win a fully-timed (ie - ABA) game???

IMO, Eastern was good to start with, but faded at the end.

Nah, I don't know who you are but that doesn't matter. All I was saying was Eastern does have some good players playing for them and Teams will have to watch out for them. As for Southern well with there team yes they should beat Eastern this year. :)

all this talk about southern and eastern, two middle of the park teams.

Pickles how can you place west so low after they won the blitz carnival? and sturt, who will even play for them this year? Darth may have mentioned it would be predominatly juniors?

Why are people picking West in the Men so high up the ladder? Haven't added any new players and they only scraped into the finals last year through other results falling their way?
And also Centrals??? Didn't even make the finals last year!

Reply #71504 | Report this post

Panther,
I think you will find the selections made so far are probably based a lot on the blitz which gives no indication of actual ABA form for a few reasons:
1. No team had their full side playing.
2. 2 x 12 minute halves with the clock running - enough said.
3. Coaches/teams keeping their cards close to their chest
4. Two or three teams didn't play

Besides, as we saw last year most people were way off with their selections anyway with South, Woodville, Eastern and West all picked to do poorly yet all finished top six while the more fancied North, Norwood, Centrals struggled.

There are many interesting selections above. I think the mens draw will finish something along the lines of:

1. Forestville
2. Woodville
3. Eastern
4. Centrals
5. Southern
6. Sturt
7. South
8. North
9. Norwood
10. West

Sturt to miss the finals for the first time in a long time. Eastern will be strong, Richard Hill has proven he is a great coach and with Hill, Bungey, Madgen, Trebil, Davis and potentially Holmes - look out.

Didn't South beat Southern yesterday in the men so how can you place them higher than South? Sturt will still be up there along with North and West. Eastern are my pick.

I think you will find that Sturt are playing Sturt Juniors that are now Senior players. ie players that have been playing with Sturt all of their lives.

With Forestville beating the Mavs in one of the more star studded grand finals the central ABL has ever seen!
