Jason Smith Fine

I see that Jason Smith has received a $10k fine for his comments about the refs in game 2.

It was also reported that he was simply airing his frustrations at the NBL referee standards which is generally shared by each club.

To get the message across to the commissioner in no uncertain terms that clubs are unhappy with the standard of referees I think that each club should write a cheque to the NBL for 1/11 of the fine incurred and note it as their share of the fine. This would certainly get the message across!

Smith should play the game and stop trying to intimidate the refs into calling the game he wants. If you have a problem with the reffing put it in writing to the league.

Jason Smith is just a whiner. His team loses he has issues with the refs. Last time they played in adelaide it was like a footy game. constant hand checking and a physical game(over the normal hand checking allowed) the refs never called it once.Brett maher got pissed and nearly got a couple of techs due to the constant fouls. no wonder sydney have such good defence. if you can hold you oposition to slow them down it makes basketball quite a simple game defensively.

We may all hate Sydney but they are like the old Vic Titans that everyone hated, they're gone now and now I wish they were back.

Imagine the NBA without the Bad Boys era in the early 90s. They were great for the competitive fire with the celtics, lakers.

The problem with the Kings is that they've gotten away with so much throughout the season that as soon as a game is called the way it should be, they complain. They are obviously not used to playing a legitimate game. The problem is not with the refs in the 2nd grand final game, but all the refs of the past that allowed them to get comfortable with their style of play.

10K sounds about right...

Perhaps that will shut him up next season.

Kings are refusing to pay, here's the article http://foxsports.news.com.au/story/0,8659,18315465-23769,00.html

King Jason Smith complains about the referees. Gets hit with $10,000 fine. Complains about size of fine. Kings refuse to pay, and challenge the NBL to come after them for the money. Smith says he doesn't know anyone who has $10,000 lying around (*cough*bullshit*cough*), says that having to pay $10,000 would "break" him financially.

Surely the NBL could show their Moltens by threatening to fine the Kings for publically talking about refusing to pay the fine and belittling the league? Pull them into line!

I agree with Isaac..
If the NBL does not show some balls in regards to this, they will look like paper warriors.
I say slap the kings with a 20K fine, and tell them if they dont pay it, they will be suspended from next season

gee I wonder what would happen if I went speeding over 100 K/h and got caught and then turned around and said I am not going to pay the fine as I can't afford it!!
Time for the league to get tuff on Sydney and set an example. If he doesnt have that sort of money on his wage then he has some serious budjet issues!!

If they are crying poor then hit them at the start of next season with the loss of premiership points!
Its just happened with the Warriors in the NRL so surely that would make the Kings really have a winge!

Stacker got a $10,000 fine for making comments about the refereeing so it's not as though there wasn't precedent in the severity of the fine.

Maybe they should put a Paypal button on the Kings website, because poor Smith, living in poverty as he obviously is, can't pay his penalty.

Isaac, Sydney Kings pregudice aside do you not feel $10,000 is excesive for a fine of this nature?
I think the league should support the Refs like all other codes do but why not suspend the player 1 game instead of such a heavy fine.

I guess they dont want players sitting out of games and they need the money so they would think it is a good way to line there own pockets.

Dont get me wrong I think he should be fined because everyone knows you can not publicly criticise the umps.

Also Michael Aylan was taken off game three as punishment for the performance.

In regards to the size of the fine we have to remember we are not the Nba where they earn Millions....

Not only is there precedent in that Stacker was fined $10,000 for his criticism, Smith had been fined before in the 2005/06 season. Stacker was warned that any future remarks would see him endure a suspension.

Smith was lucky that he wasn't suspended. Would the Kings rather pay $10,000 or have Smith miss the third game of that Grand Final series?

If you don't want to get a fine or suspended, then keep your mouth shut. If this was a first instance or he'd said something really tame or borderline, that's one thing, but he was pretty strong with his phrasing - "farcical" isn't exactly a compliment.

The league can't allow players to publically comment and potentially intimidate the referees. I think that Smyth should give up his Fox timeout comments on referees too (what he says during a Fox timeout and a non-camera timeout is very different) and if anyone has an issue, take it up by phone or in writing with the league.

I think the league had to draw the line in the sand . Particularly as Smith is a repeat offender.

As a supporter of basketball in Australia i feel it is my right as a fan to criticise the NBL if i wish, however, Smith is an EMPLOYEE within the system and it is highly unprofessional of him to do so.
You cannot have people within the system publicly condemning officials in the media, it makes your league look like a joke.

I know it is the Aussie way to express yourself, but PUT IT IN WRITING.

On a personal note i find it hilarious that the Kings are complaining about "no-calls" when they have clearly been the worst muggers all year. They were beaten by a determined team who were happy to mix it with them , and more importantly had the SIZE to do so. Something sadly the 36ers lack.

Maybe if you guys feel so bad for Smith, you could start a drive on this site and donate it to him. Ill even chip in 40c by direct credit for the phone call ;)

$10,000 is hefty for the size of the offence. You could do a lot worse for $10,000.

Yeah, but he didn't shut up after being fined $5,000 (or whatever it was earlier in the season) so where should the league have gone with the fine.

Smith even stated that his comments were designed to provoke a response from the NBL. Well, he got his response. Doesn't really put him in the position to bitch about the income.

The NBL is correct, if he has a problem with the penalty, he should appeal the decision, just like everyone else would have to. I think it is a reflection on how special Sydney think they are if they think they can just talk their way out of the fine.

NBL Waiting on Kings

If the Kings appeal and lose, they have to pay a $5000 fee which is non-refundable.

After the appeal allowance has lapsed (seven days), then the NBL will deal with the Kings.

Tim Morrissey seems to think that the Kings will stick to their guns and ignore the opportunity to appeal.

Maybe GoldenPalace or whatever that media-stunt casino is called should pay the fine in exchange for some easy publicity? He could have Golden Palace tattooed on his forehead? Apparently Anthony Stewart gets $20,000 a year for that ridiculous CEC texta logo on his arm...
