Funny Talking Hoops Recap

Here is my recap of last nights show for anyone interested.

Paul Bell and Paul Bauer were hosting, from the start, Brett Maher joined them later in the show and replaced Bauer.

They spoke about Sturt, Brett Maher has retired from Sturt, for now anyway, as he feels his body would need a little bit of extra rest with 36ers pre-season starting soon, and also he was also getting frustrated with his form, didn't think he was up to his usual standards so decided to take a break. They also spoke about Paul Bauer who is no longer playing just coaching, and he sees the opportunity for younger guys like Darren Ng, etc to shine with himself and Maher not playing.

They discussed 36ers season tickets, which were released recently, the prices have generally been reduced and have been structured a little bit differently, Bauer believed they were good value in comparison to the Power, Crows and Adelaide United. Any further changes, if any, to be made would occur after the new owners have taken over. And they are hoping further sponsorships and ticket memberships will occur once the new owners are on board.
They are intending to offer packages for 5 games, for those who don't want season tickets, have also re-introduced the junior jammers package, which entails some game tickets, 36ers drink bottles, etc for $25. Walk up prices will be determined when the new owner comes in place.

Sponsorship interest is good, especially for companies only wanting to spend around $15k, as they can get a lot more value from the 36ers as apposed to the AFL teams.

Brad Newley Interview: He had just returned from the US today, found the trip valuable learnt some things he needs to improve and things he is already good at, feels he needs to work on his strength, as in the NBA there is a lot of bumping and pushing and feels this will help him defensively, worked out with, jazz, sun, bucks, wizards, kings, rockets, said Utah and Milwaukee showed the most interest in, Milwaukee were coming close and it looked like the 39th pick could have been his, but they wouldn't 100% guarantee it, so they decided to pull out and improve in the NBL with Townsville and try again next season. He is glad to be contracted with the Crocs and hopes to have a better season with the team and personally, he took Ian Stacker over to the US with him to help bridge the gap between the coaches and scouts at the clubs, got to meet and have dinner with Richard Hamlilton, brushed shoulders with LeBron James, joining the Australian camp Thursday night, to begin his boomers commitments, and he has a very busy schedule with the boomers, a few up coming camps and a tour to new Zealand, newly thinks he should be ready to go as he has been training for a while. Feels Townsville will be good, with the role players they have picked up and improvement from Vanderjagt, and depending on the calibre of the import point guard they get. Asked on Townsville coach Trevor Gleeson, said he hasn't met him in person, but in speaking to him, feels he is going to run a fast moving team, similar to what he may have done in the CBA. Has spoken to Goorjian about the boomers, who basically told him to sort his NBA stuff out and then join the boomers from there. Newley is hoping to make the world champs, and is excited about the prospect of playing against all the best players in the world, which will be a lot higher standard than the commonwealth games.

Bell and Bauer spoke about the world champs, aparantly a very busy schedule for boomers training camps and Bauer is hopeful that SBS will run it on TV, he has seen petition for SBS and Channel 7. They feel Newley will hopefully have a good season in the NBL and make the NBA next year.

Announced under 18 mens and womens teams. (I Didn't catch all the names, ) they wished them all the best and hoped to follow the results on the show.

Neil Mottram Interview: spoke to him about his back, he said its just a over use injury, so has decided to rest it, hence pulling out of the boomers for the world championships. He is working with a physio in Adelaide to re-habilitate it, and is hoping to use his European passport and play in Europe next year. Said the trip to china was more of a sponsorship thing, he said it was a good experience but would of rather stay in Australia. Said they won most of the games by a average of 20 points with the tigers side minus, tucker, thomas and anstey. Spoke about the amount of smoking done in the stadiums in china. He is not sure how long he will be in Adelaide, depending on when and if he gets a European contract. Asked if Anstey would return to the tigers, said he has a contract for next season, but out clauses for Europe and NBA so said it was to early to call. He wasn't aware of any back up plans for the tigers if Anstey were to leave. Spoke highly of coach Al Westover, and said he had defiantly earnt it after his long apprenticeship behind Lindsey Gaze, spoke about tigers changes, added Nathan Crosswell, released Braith Cox, thinks Crosswell will be a great addition to also help spell D-mac, spoke about the tigers being favourites, and he believed if they can keep Anstey and the imports the team will be very strong again next season. He aims to make the squad for the next Olympics, and goorjian intends on putting him in the squad for it aslong as he is back playing and healthy. Spoke about his brother Craig, and said he is travelling around doing Altitude training in various places around the world.

Bell and Bauer spoke about Mottram, Bauer said he hopes to see him back fully fit, as we probably havnt seen the best of Neil Mottram, and they believed Crosswell was a very good signing and the tigers would be right up there for the title again

Alan Black Interview: Was pretty happy with last season with the taipans, but was disappointed that they couldn't win the title. Asked about the Boodnikoff situation, they gave him scans after the finals, and were told he was ok, later re-scanned and needed surgery and will miss the first 5 games, so they are looking to replace him temporarily. Mee is possibly going to be naturalised in October, which would free up a import spot, black said they are not going to rely on it, asked about Cattalini, Joked that apparently he has been sitting in Fremantle eating donuts, and needs a pinch test, said that Cat had a good season, especially since having to adjust from the 3 spot to the 4 spot and ended up being team mvp. Disappointed about losing Nathan Crosswell, as he had seen him take a big step up and was looking forward to having him back, but also is excited about having Luke Martin replace him as Back up point guard. Spoke about Burgess, who is looking at Europe so the Taipans are looking at other options, but hasn't ruled out 100% the possibility of Burgess returning. They are looking to replace Burgess with a burgess with a similar player to him, maybe more athletic, spoke about how you get excited with some of the possibilities but you have to be careful with things like pacific shrinkage. Said Cairns is a place that loves there basketball, and that they are bigger than what the wildcats are in Perth due to having no AFL teams in Cairns, he is enjoying been back in coaching, and really loves being involved in game day. Anthony Stewart has been re-signed, he has found the points system to be a drama, and thought a agent woulda scrapped it by now, he felt Stewey and Grabau handled the 2 spot well, intends Grabau to start ahead of Stewy next year, Black is still playing Cairns A-Grade.

Bell and Bauer spoke about Cairns last year, with the 2 buzzer beaters against the 36ers, and the possibility of Darnell Mee and Dusty Rychart being Australian, and they feel Mee could play another few years like D-Mac.

Russel Hinder Interview: Recently joined the Sydney Kings and was very excited to get the opportunity to test himself and improve with the Kings under Goorjian. The main reason he went to Sydney with future in mind, to see how far he can push himself and see if he could improve enough to maybe go overseas and felt the kings were the best place to do this. Said 36ers were in the mix, said he got a call from Smyth about it, and he said he has always loved Adelaide and the system Phil runs, but is happy to be playing with the kings in his home town, has been training with the kings, 6 times a week with the kings conditioning coaches, feels it's a good choice to be in Sydney al ready, said they are all working super hard and hopes they can keep it up. Kings have just got back from china playing the junior team and national team, which they managed to beat both, and was happy to beat the national team. Joked that he was recruited at the Commonwealth games, but it was a done deal before then. Training, Monday wights, Tuesday, track and on courts, Wednesday weights, Thursday track, Friday weights, feels they will be super fit, he said it's a lot more full on than other teams he has played for, doesn't expect the foot to be taken off the pedal at all, if Goorjian could start pre-season the day after the kings finnish he would. Found the commonwealth games were great, and he was very happy to be there and happy to win the gold medal and believes they will have stories and experiences to share for the rest of there lives. He is involved in the boomers camp starting Wednesday, for the fringe players camp, and hopes to be invited to the next camp with all the superstars of the Boomers, it will be full on but he cannot wait, and relishes every opportunity to train and play with the boomers.

Maher has come in to the studio, they spoke about Goorjians training session, Maher said its very full on, and the track sessions are like being a national sprinter, with the huge amount of sprints they are doing, he feels Sydney is a program where senior players wont go to due to the amount of training, but feels its good for young players with development, but feels most veterans leave, with the exceptions of Jason Smith and Brad Sheridan.

Liam Flynn NBA Update: Spoke about Game 4, dallas had 2 games away where they should of won and have blown them both, but now they have 2 games at home where they have to finish it off. Spoke about Dwayne Wade, said he is an outstanding player, the biggest story of the playoffs, as no one expected him to be as special as he is, expected to be a all star level but not to be of the level averaging numbers he is and taking over games like he is. The heat run a lot of stuff and do a great job of getting him open, with various plays, and he also plays the passing lanes and knows how to create shots for himself. Spoke about Shaqs foul shooting, and said the heat are lucky that they have been able to rely on Wade to win the games, so shaqs foul shooting hasn't been a huge factor, and they feel that Dallas will have it tough to get it back, Dirk hasn't really been able to take over games totally, feel Dallas lacks the star combination ala shaq/kobe, Jordan/Pippen, so Dallas have to focus on Dirk to much, and Pat Riley has been able to successfully coach against Dirk, who is doing a good job, but probably needs more help. Feels the pick n pop with Jason Terry and Dirk has worked well, but Riley seems to have been a step ahead of the Mavs. Spoke about Slam Ball which is a cross between Basketball, rugby, wrestling, which They think is a very exciting sport to watch. Spoke about the long stocking things, that Wade and a few of the NBA players wear, Maher doesn't like them to play in very much, and it is believed the NBA will be banning the skin stockings next season. Bell still picks the Mavs for the title, Maher is now going for the Mavs aswell, as he expects Dirk to hit a hot patch. Spoke about Cuban and Dirk being fined over comments on the Ref, Flynn said he was surprised Avery Johnson wasn't fined over comments towards the refs.

Maher and Bell Spoke about free kids coaching clinics Maher has been running at all the clubs for under 10's to under 14's and Maher is running a school holiday clinic at Mars for kids. Spoke about Maher retiring from Sturt, said he enjoyed the 4 or 5 games he has played, said he played for fitness reasons, and hasn't been shooting much so he hasn't hit the level of shooting he expects, and is going to freshen himself up for the 36ers pre season, which he feels they have a good team.
Plugged the Hudson Maher Foundation dinner, maskare theme, the hoops wine tour.

Another Great show look forward to next Tuesday

Ng to shine now Bauer and Maher not playing? Damn, so what he's done last few months was in the shadow and now we'll see what he can really achieve in ABL?
