Kings buyer revealed, Firepower

Bit of movement in Sydney WRT the Kings ownership.

A WEST Australian fuel company chairman with links to the South Sydney Rabbitohs is about to take control of the Sydney Kings.

Weeks after Russell Crowe revealed Firepower's $3m three-year deal to become Souths' major sponsor, the company's chairman, Tim Johnston, is set to buy a majority share of the NBL club with input from international backers.

The sale is believed to have been ratified by the NBL board, but it would not yet comment.

The purchase of the basketball club would expand Johnston's Firepower sporting links. Firepower sponsor the Western Force Super 14 rugby union team, the Firepower Racing team which includes V8 supercars, superbikes and Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, and boxer Paul Briggs.

Kings have had on-court success recently and some steady crowd figures, but still have untapped potential. Some fresh views at the top might help them.

Would be interesting if they perform like the Rabbitohs.
