Dinner party

If you could invite five people associated with basketball to a dinner party, who would they be?

They can be dead or alive, male or female, player, coach or administrator, Australian or international - as long as they have a connection with basketball. I think a key criteria should be that they are interesting, not necessarily good at what they do.

Here's mine:

1) Charles Barkley. Every dinner party needs that quiet, introverted type.

2) Wilt Chamberlain, circa late 1960s. You know, in case he brings one or more of his...um...entourage along.

3) Dennis Rodman, circa first weird phase in the mid 1990s. But before he became too weird.

4) Mark Cuban. Really interesting guy who loves his hoops. I'd also ask him if he could lend me 10 bucks.

5) Bob Knight. The first thing I'd do is tell him that Wilt thinks his red sweater sucks, and retreat to a safe distance to watch ensuing fireworks.

Unlucky to miss out: Bill Simmons, Marv Albert (just to hear him say "Yes! And it counts!" in person), Shaq, the guys who invented NBA Jam so I can thank them in person, Dean Smith, Reggie Lewis and Penny Taylor.

My five

1) Jordan with his cigars in tow

2) Mark Cuban

3) Coach K

4) Manute Bol (give me someone to laugh at)

5) Lebron

My waiter for the night would be Craig Ehlo so Jordan can relive that Bulls V Cavs game...

My 5

5) Dr. James Naismith's the dude invented the game and it would be extremely interesting to get his perspective on how the NBA and international basketball has developed.

4) Sir Charles Barkley the man can tell a story and he would be very amusing

3) Michael Jordan Well he is mike and he could help Charles along with a few antidotal stories for the evening.

2) Andrew Gaze He was out own star (now a dancing star) and we have to have some representation. He will try and arguer with Charles and Bobby knight and it will be spectacular to see him get shot down.

1) Bobby Knights If anyone was going to argue the fundamentals surrounding the rules and regulations of the game of basketball with Naismith it would be Bobby Knights so that would be a good end to the list.

World B. Free - ex NBA player as I would love to know why he changed his name to World B. Free

Jack Haley - cos Rodman is coming!

Frank Brickowski - So Rodman can taunt him some more like he did in the 96 Finals.

John Wooden - True legend in the development of the game. Concepts invented by wooden still in use today proving that when all is said and done the game is fundamental first and foremost.

Larry Bird - once asked what position he played. Response: "As you know I have to do everything, so I play all positions" I would like to talk to him about the stone-face and what he was thinking when Reggie hit that shot against the Bulls.

Magic - As a rookie he walked into one of the best teams of all time I would want to know how tough it was to adjust to being around greatness as a kid!

Reggie Lewis (or Len Bias) - Just to speculate on how good he (they) could have been if he (they) hadn't died so young with so much to come in his (their) career(s)

The Edmonton Grads Women's Team (1915-40) - Played at the 1932 Olympics (record 27-0). Over their 25 year existence compiled a record of 502-20 (96.2%) in international basketball including a streak of 147 games in a row. True pioneers of women's basketball and a team that introduced girls to the game

Bob Knight got a guernsey in the very first post on this thread.

He is going to come around to your house and throw a chair at you.

Matt,

Love to, but can't. I'm going to see this guy in concert.

MJ and Isiah on the same dinner table, that'll be interesting. Wasn't it MJ that didn't want Isiah on the Dream Team???

Make an interesting conversation that one. That's one interesting table Early Bird.

Arguably the best player the world has seen seated next to probably the most all-rounded player in a long time, seated across from probably the best College coach in a long long time who is next to a legend NBA Coach wo has as many rings as he has fingers who inturn is sitting next to possibly the worst coach in the NBA, and most definately the worst GM in the history of the NBA.

DB5, I don't find anything for myself - I just recycle websites found by other people who have actually done the work.

Mind you, sometimes I inadvertently stumble across some nuggets, eg that Serena Williams has a pit bull named Bambi.

Lloyd it was Ray Jackson not Jimmy. Jimmy Jackson went to the Ohio State and then drafted by Dallas Mavs.

The Fab 5 were - Chris Webber, Jimmy King, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard and Ray Jackson.

As I'm not an NBA fan, mine has a distinct local flavour

1) Jordan - greatest player of all time, how could you not?

2) Andrew Gaze - the closest Australia has/will come to MJ....

3) Erin Phillips...superstar in the making

4) Lauren Jackson....greatest female player to play the game

5) Rodman.....after reading his autobiography a number of times, just to listen to him tell some stories would be great (as long as he brought his interpreter with him!)
