if they are going to have a good clean out, which is what is needed and at this stage it looks like they are going to get rid of Farley I would like to see them go after some good Aussie Talent. They should keep Horvath, Maher, Majstrovich, Sutton and Brad Hill.....Possibly Cooper as a back up Center! Recruit a good small/power forward as an import go after someone like James Harvey(even though hes a tool) hes good Aussie talent at the 2 spot and maybe someone like a Daniel Egan!

One of the South Australian group (Newley, Ingles, Holmes, Forman) might be out of contract, so pursue Newley and (selfishly) hope he doesn't make the NBA.

I think they will be very much trying to convince Horvath to stay.

Look at giving Copeland another year.

Take advantage of the Pigs' poor season to try and get Khazzouh across perhaps? Or Harvey. Get in quickly before the Gold Coast team starts making moves.

Try for Knight, Kickert, Loughton, any of those college bigs if they're available. Try for Schenscher too if he has no luck later this year in the NBA.

Don't forget Nash, he's already contracted! I really hope the tough decision is made and his contract is paid out and he is given the gold watch.

Khazzouh would be good, but we'd need a perimeter defence, otherwise he'll be fouling out in 10 minutes.

I'd say go with Copeland again if he wants to continue. Just don't play him for 30 minutes in the games where he is obviously off (and blind Freddy can tell when those games will be after 3 minutes).

Newley would be great, but some how I doubt it.

Yea i think we should retain Maher, Farley (depending on how he finishes the season, im a big fan and would like to see him back, but wouldnt be surprised if they do let him go from the article the other day), Hill, Majstro, Wheeler or Cooper as back up centre prob coops as he is younger and not injury prone, Sutton, maybe Ng to come on and hit a few shots here and there, and maybe Horvath, but i personally wouldnt mind a more versatile import forward like Dave Thomas come into our line up, so id guess one of Farley and Horvath could be let go. Out of the SA guys i think only Newley and maybe Schenscher would be off contract so id go after both of them pretty hard (not sure if we would get either though) and yea i wouldnt mind seeing Harvey, Rush or Khazzah stolen from West Sydney. I think when the Free agent list comes out we should go after every decent Aussie on the list, even if they are a guy like Saville who has been at the Hawks for ever it cant hurt to ask, and yea i think the coaches should also go after all the young guys returning from college and some names ive seen on the net are Matt Knight, Stefan Blacynski or something like that, and various others i hope at the least Smyth looks at sites such as Aussiehoopsamerica.com.au and sees how they are all going

its Stefan Blaszczynski, the name mentioned above seems to be dooing very well in the NCAA and could be worth a look

Just putting some of the names i mentioned before into a squad together and i think a line up like this would look pretty awesome, but would require some impressive recruiting as id say Newley, Schenscher and a guy like Knight returning from college would be in high demand around the league
PG Maher/Sutton
SG Farley/Hill
SF Newley/Majstro
PF Horvath/Matt Knight
C Schenscher/Cooper

Wheeler should go, he's just not reliable with those injuries.
Farley needs to step up and play well every game, not just when he feels like it. I'd like to see him stay tho.

Horvath, Maher, Majstrovich, Sutton and Brad Hill should also stay.

Sixers need Newley, but will he comes home while Smyth is still here? I think if we got rid of him (although he's a good coach), we mite have a chance getting some of our better SA players back...

I can't say much on this topic, but I don't think it should be interpreted that a move from Newley would necessitate the departure of Smyth. e.g., a player can have concerns, but still play successfully under a coach - have never heard of a specific issue, for example.

Yea, even if Smyth isnt considered a great coach for development players and rookies it may not prevent a guy like Newley coming back as he is now proven and will be starting at any team, and i personally think he would fit Smyths game plan well, heres hoping we can get him!!

Yeah, fair enough Isaac. I guess if the Sixers offered Newley enough dough & he was interested in coming home, he would, regardless of Smyth.

Farley is the next Charles Thomas.. someone not consistent enough which is what the 36ers need!

Keep Horvath, Maher, Majstrovich, Sutton, Hill, Cooper, Ng
+ import (or Schenscher)

recruit any of the following:
Ingles, Newley, Holmes, Forman

Not enough change is being suggested here. If you are going to keep half the team together, then that's not enough. The 36ers need a complete overhaul. I wouldn't be keeping any more than 3 of the existing players, Maher, Sutton & Horvath. They don't play well together now so why not take a risk on a completely new team?

i would like to see farley stay he is someone the general public know and he is good when he is on, its just getting him on more than he has been recently, although as was stated he really carried this team for a large part of the year. If he was to depart i would look at a Jayson Wells to fill the 4, hill to fill the starting 3 and live with his development mistakes if we can get newley back or 2 if we cant. Keep mastro as a 3/4 sarter/backup and brett running the point with sutton. Keep Horvath and copeland buyout nash and go after solid backups from college and overhere (dont know who) just think they have to back some young guys , fans will take losses and bonehead plays from young guys if they see development and a future.

Yea id like to keep Farley and Horvath is also a good player but if we were to let 1 go id love to see Jayson Wells or Dave Thomas come here as they can both play anything from Sg-PF and are top quality imports and are exciting for fans to watch!!

EC I have to disagree.

While the core needs some change I don't think we have to replace the majority of the squad.

Farley's time is over and he needs to go. Nash needs to do the club a favour and retire. Wheeler was required at the time but it just hasn't worked and retirement beckons for him also.

If Newley remains in Australia then obviously now is the time the 36ers need to do everything they can to sign him up.

Replace Farley with a Groves type import and you're starting group would look like:

Maher
Groves
Newley
Horvath
Cooper

If the 36ers can find a steal on the free agents list or drag Schensh home (very doubtful) or find an Aussie big man in the US system then even better. If that doesn't happen though the starting group have 4 players who work hard and all can score 20+ every night. Cooper's defensive presence makes up for his lack of offensive output when you put him next to the other four.

Sutts, Ng and Mastro are all good for what they cost the club and should all be held onto IMO. Again hit the free agents list/US College System for a 3/4 (maybe even a Dan Dillon, Nic Campbell, Dan Bass type) and a BIG tough big man (like an Axel Dench, Aleks Maric, Luke Nevill, Matthew Knight type even Ben Allen) and you've got a championship calibre side I would think.

the only players that should stay are Maher with a paycut,Horvarth, Mastro and Hill, Willies to expensive for what he does and the rest just dont cut it, if you think they'll get Newley, Holmes, Forman or any other decent young guys ya dreamin

Anon #112920, how can you be sure. The recruitment process will be different next year now that the club is privately owned. Hemmerling has had a lot of success in management of sporting groups, why wouldn't he make a difference to Adelaide's ability to attract the right players?

i dunno y ppl wanna keep farley..

ok, he was excellent during his previous seasons with the 36ers (especially 2002) but what does he bring to the team that we couldnt get from another import or player?

we know his defence isnt great. he has patches when he just "gives up" or drops his head when things arent goin his way..

he's averaging 20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists - sure, not bad stats but he's shooting 39% from the field (which is poor) and 28% from 3 point range (also poor)

i think we can get someone to the 36ers who will average better, be more consistent, and better defensively than Farley

some have suggested jayson wells.. i cant give any suggestions but i'm sure there's better players than Farley out there who we can spend our money on

I cant beleive people are calling for the sacking of Farley and want to retain Copeland? Farley has proved over his time that he is an outstanding player, every player @ any level goes through good and bad patches, it just so happens that Willie is in a bad patch at the moment and as he is an import is more heavily scrutinised than others!! If it were Maher in the same position would you be calling for his sacking too......I dont think so!! In addition just for the record Willie when first recruited by the 36ers was brought in as a defensive specialist and when he wants to I beleive is one of if not the best defender at the guard position!! I think alot of you are forgetting last year when we won alot of those close games, if you recall it was due to Willies defence, when it mattered and counted most! The fact is the whole team at them moment isnt playing defence not just Willie and we all know defence wins Championships!!

Problem isnt his ability, its his sooking, pouting attitude. Imports are very dispensable and he should realis this by now, especially in contract year. But thanks for your thoughts anyway Mrs Farley.

Incredible..i keep reading here that we have such a crap team. Then almost everyone above says we should keep most of it??

I still believe Phil aint the problem, I loved watchin Willie when we were in Adel..but, if the guy doesnt give a rats a*$e, then dump him..lets get some decent talent out there!

My comments:
(#112920) - Maher is on bread and butter anyway. Why do you think he went and played in Europe... he got paid more in 6 weeks than he did in three years at the sixers.

Also; Farley is to the sixers, what Lehmann is to the Redbacks. Both have been around for a while and when they're in form, just blitz the field and lead their team to victory. Other times they are just sh*thouse (and the team falls as well). Coincidence that both teams are near the bottom of their respective tables?

Another thing.
If the sixers didn't look at recruiting younger players, within a year or two, they would prob be looking at havign to buy up the closest Resthaven.
Then soon after, Copeland and the rest of the old farts can move in and be able to retire.

PG Mee
SG Maher
SF Newley
PF M. Knight
C Horvath

6 Hill
7 Cooper
8 Majstrovic
9 Sutton
10 Dodman

I don't know enough about Shannon Seebohm who is the only SA representative at the AIS at the moment. Is he a NBL prospect?

Knight is a 6'8" PF who is averaging about 17 and 9 at NCAA Div 1 level. He would only be a minimum player under the points cap as far as I am aware in much the same way as Kendall, Worthington and co, so would be a good pick-up.

If we missed out on him, still have an import spot available in the above team to use on a PF.

Basically Newley for Farley. Wheeler + Copeland + Timmons + Nash for Mee and Knight.

Maher would be on max or close to it in Adelaide. The Euro deal was attractive because they can pay cash (forget about tax), often USD and it's for a short space of time.
