What happened to Harold Miner?

If you check out www.euro.basket.com you can search the world's league for a Player & nothing comes up now for Harold. He must have retired by now.

Miner as someone put it was "baby" jordan. He had some serious hops and a fair amount of creativity to match.

He's out there spending the money he ripped off from the NBA. He's part of a not so secret society that has prominent members such as Vince Carter, Juwan Howard, and Penny Hardaway.

I was a huge fan of Harold Miner. I recorded all the highlights from his games. He was the baskeball player I most wanted to emulate. What happened to him was outrageous. It just shows that talent alone is not what makes people shine. Put them in bad situations and even the best players can look average, even less than average. I weep for Harold Miner and the NBA. I think he was close to being as good as Kobe, the best player since Jordan.

I'm a huge Miner fan too. Best college shooting guard I have ever seen. I have never heard anything connecting him to any drugs at all. As a NBA player he just never got any playing time. Heat Managment was behind him even traded Steve Smith so he could start, but coach Kevin Lock. seemed to hate him. I remember this game he scored 14 points in 7 mins. vs the Nets. Another came he came of the bench a dropped 22 on John Starks. The 20 he had on Jordan as a Rook, the 28 point game vs. Celtics and the 27 vs the Jazz are still big to me. When he played he played well on offense. He was on a team with about 9 other players who were the same size wise. In 94 he was a big reason they made the playoffs, I still feel they lost game 5 cause Miner didn't get to play. He was traded to the Cavs were he almost never got to play. In 96-1997 he signed a contract with the Raptors (Zeke loved Miner's talent) just before the preseason, very shorthly I believe got tired of the hassle and he retired, because he never played for them. He did have knee problems all during his last 3 years as it kept him out of the 94 contest. Awesome dunker top 5 all time. I have a pair of his Air Flights.

I was just watching an NBA behind the scenes type show and the owner of the atl Hawks mentioned that he showed up for a wannabe NBA pickup game with some NBDL'ers and scored like 60 points. Then he never came back. Miner still has some game left in those old knees of his. Come back and save the Timberwolves Miner, they need you.

Just been watching nba.com video archive and the Harold Miner dunk offs. Man that boy had skills dont know bout the rest off his game but who cares you dunk heavy at the right time and the whole world will see you.

I don't understand why some clubs don't want to allow teams into div 1 even though they are clearly good enough. I think these clubs should stop being scared that they will be beaten by the second team from a club.

The man didnt have any skills other than dunking. I watched him every night with the Heat and he had no shot, no low post game, couldnt dribble in traffic and low BBall IQ. In college he couldnt be stopped but in the NBA they play D and he was lost. When he went to Cleveland his coach said his problem was moving without the ball. The Heat knew that for years and dumped him. He had a strong body and mad hops but thats about it.

I once saw a dunk he made that made me cry, but I guess you need more than that because he was a complete failure in the NBA. I heard he was working security somewhere for awhile. Remember he played before the big contracts so I doubt if he has that much still. I'm sure he can still clean up at the local courts so look out if you see him, but for all the people here who said he had skillz his total game was a joke.

Man, I dont care what anyone says bout Harold Miner. He has got to be the second most underated player that ever went into the NBA. The NBA just dumped him off like nothing, people dont realize it but the NBA does some bullshit under the fans nose. The man had crazy hops. People don't know what there talking bout. He had crazy skills....just no playing time. For the people who say he had no skills, Kobe had the same skills Miner had when he came into the league. The Lakers coaches worked with Kobe on his shot and having Shaq helps alot.If the coaches in Miami had the patients and worked with Miner as the Lakers coaches did with Kobe....just imagine.

I found a basketball autographed by Harold Miner at a Cleveland Cavaliers' Community Relations auction. I paid $15 for it!!! Anyone remember his Air Darwin Nike commercials? I wish he would resurface somewhere and show up on a SportsCenter highlight in an NBDL game or something, coming through the lane and throwing down one of his left handed windmills.

Stop whining about poor Harold Miner. I'll tell you what happened to Baby J: No D! It doesn't matter how great your offense is, if you are unwilling to commit to Defense, your career will be shortlived. Add to the fact that he never had a consistent outside jumper and well, you get the rest.

If Miner had been drafted now, he might have made it. Because that's the problem with the NBA now. Everybody is tall and athletic, so dunking is easy. All they show on the highlight reels are the dunks. Who cares about working on the harder aspects like outside shooting and defense. I admit, I really enjoyed watching Miner play, but he has himself to blame. The guy was super athletic, but that just ain't enough. harold miner had the most scoring potential of any shooting guard i have ever seen come into the nba.to this day i have NEVER SEEN a 2 guard with the handles he had.he did have a outside shot and miami was a team full of non defenders it just didn't happen for him. he was the most talented and explosive guard i have seen in the college level michael jordan included.

The reason Harold Miner is no longer in the NBA, isn't because he wasn't a good player...it was because he lacked an all-around game, rarely played defense. Plus his knees added to his demise. If he had dunked the hell outta the rim during games like Shawn Kemp did, he probably would've had plenty of playing time. He seemed to hesitate a lot when he played and seemed to disappear during games. I don't think he had the superstar qualities that would have put him with a Kobe or a Jordan. Look at Vince Carter...smoothest dunker in the world... but doesn't have the true superstar skills to be mentioned with Jordan or Kobe. Miner's a legend in his own right. For not even having a true NBA career, he's forever immortalized with his two Slam-Dunk Championships. One coming after knee surgery. Who can claim that? Kobe? Vince?

First of all, you rookies got it all twizted! I grew up in Inglewood for 22yrs and Harold was a close friend of mine who graduated in the same class of 88'. He got the name "babyJordan" back in the wood from his simulated play and facial features like the man himself. Myself and other friends supported Harold through his short NBA span in which i believe was short-changed due to reluctant coaches and management. Failure to develop more as a all-around player while applying effort from training camps'(Miami & Cleveland) yes, he was the most underrated player in the NBA of the 90's. I do recall dayz playing with him @Rogers park in Inglewood; sometimes even making an appearance at Darby park/clay courts on Crenshaw. Harold was a very humble and quiet homie if you really knew him but his sensitivity was a downfall. The deceptive hurt he received in the NBA (which was his dream) put a scar on his hopes of being the best player in the league. I lost contact over the years with he but i heard he is living good in Vegas i wish if anyone had dibs on him to contact my email: inglewood24@yahoo.com. I would recommend fans of Harold Miner to check out Stromile Swift of the Houston Rockets. Stromile is in a similar situation that Harold was in... Stromile was drafter #2 overall by the Vancouver Grizzlies in 2000 (a terrible team) but HAS NEVER RECEIVED BIG MINUTES!!!

Harold Miner, in his first two seasons, had a FG% of like 46%!! That's phenomenal for a guard, and he consistently got to the foul line. Despite his consistently aggressive play, his coaches always favored inferior players like Brian Shaw, Khalid Reeves, Ledell Eackles... just like Stromile Swift has been benched for guys like Lorenzen Wright, Shareef Abdur Rahim, Juwan Howard, Ryan Bowen, Bo Outlaw, etc...

I think it was interesting the post on miner's knees giving out because of his bench time. Imagine if Jordan was not given the green light by his coaches. For all the good Jordan did he was able to blossom and explore his creativity, while learning to be a ferocious defender. I think scoring and defense go hand and hand. If you are a prolific scorer, you obviously have skills, thus you could defend better in time do to the knowledge of how to score in the "N.o D.efense A.ssociation". Miner had the makings of a great player and the passion to be a role model for kids, with his infectious smile. Imagine following in the foot steps of Jordan? Can you all nay-sayers do it? Jordan is the greatest ever. Period. In fact I really think Jordan in his time actually liked Harold. Yes you can say their mat have been anomosity and NIKE and such, but Jordan loves the game, and most of all the passion. Listen when he talks of Magic, Bird, and the others. That coach for the heat, where is he now? I don't see partial or unpartial remarks on him at all. I also tried out for the crappy teams of the NBA such as the Raptors, the Knicks and the Magic. I am such a big fan of harold miner.
I liked the dunking but what really amazed me the most was his dribble drives, unbelievable. He had such deceptive way of dribbling really low to the ground and very quick.

he was definitely not a point guard though at times they foolishly played him in that position, taking the ball up the court.

his jump shot was on and off and his defense needed improvement- but he had some defensive tricks up his sleeve, he was great stealing and stripping the ball. But Kevin Louchery never helped in developing his game.

Kobe Bryant had the same skill level when entering the league but the only difference was he had a chance.

HM was the basketball player i wanted to emulate out of all the nba players. I hope he is doing well to this day and wish him the best of luck in life.

...mostly. HM is doing quite well--but I won't divulve much info about him except to dispell some misrepresentaions in this thread: He's not working at HD, not coaching, didn't join the ABL or any other league post NBA, he's not in the LAPD (though one of his brothers is a cop elsewhere in the country), he doesn't have a drug rap (or any other kind of criminal record), he isn't ordained (though he is a Christian), and has had no association whatsoever with Fear Factor or Brokeback Mountain :).
What has happened to him post NBA? Eleven years of normal life, basically. I'll just leave it at that.

in july 07 he paid $1.336m for this new home. as of the time this is being written he still owned his former property on royal ascot dr but it's on the market for $1.799m. here is a link. for having not played in the nba for 11 years he is still living very well, though it does appear that his new home is somewhat of a downgrade.

i was 13 y/o and was at the game when harold miner set the points record at bob devaney sports center in lincoln, ne (against the huskers) w/ 43 points. i became a huge fan and follower of harold since and he is easily my favorite basketball player ever (well i have to admit i love jordan but so does everyone else ... and miner is somebody unique) my best to harold and his family. thanks for the memories. throughout jr high and high school i shot my free throws w/ the ball around the hips before free throw routine that miner did.
