Referee Rankings

(#698 | Report post)

Since the topic of recent discussion has been pro-referee, just wondering who people believe the top five ref's in the state are?

IMO

1. Phil Haines
2. Nathan Wieland
3. Andrew Filmer
4. Geoff Weeks
5. Nathan Durant

re: Referee Rankings (#7069 | Report post)

I'm just glad that nobody rates that bald headed daniel bloke. He and filmer would have to be the worst I have ever played under. What about "Beamsie" even when he makes a bad call it's good to watch and the actions makes you forget about the bad call.

Posted by White Lightning years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#7071 | Report post)

Daniel Haebich... I agree :)

Posted by Alf years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#7072 | Report post)

I think most people agree - although I think it's to everyones benefit if we see him on the floor in black & white than on the bench in black & red (with the infamous cap).

My Top 5

1. Phil Haines (long way ahead of the rest).
2. Geoff Weeks (even after all these years).
3. John Clover (best of the 'new breed').
4. Nathan Wieland (not far behind John).
5. Andrew Filmer (by default. There's just no talent!).

Benn McDonald has got too far, too quick. Out of his depth at 'high-end' ABL and WNBL. Amy isn't ready for that stuff, either. Carolyn doesn't rate a mention, because as far as I know, she's 'retired'. Maidment is passed it, but is still reasonable value. Tristan Graham is probably the best of the rest.

Posted by Hoop Addict years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#7076 | Report post)

Hoop,

Mostly agree, but would probably fir Tristan into my top 5 at the expense of Filmer. Nathan Durant would also have to be close.

Wiseguy,

Bridgeman? Are you kidding? What a shocker!

Posted by Cat in the Hat years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#7085 | Report post)

What's wrong with Bridgeman?

Durant has good game, a few years off yet.

How about junior refs? Who's in the next wave of good refs?

Posted by Wise Guy years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#7107 | Report post)

Bridgeman isn't that flash. Shouldn't be as high as he is, in my opinion. Same could be said for Welbourn, Andrew Just & Daniel Haebich.

Durant is only 21/22. I think he'll be a good ref in years to come if he controls his ego.

Not a whole lot of really good young refs, from what I've seen.

re: Referee Rankings (#7110 | Report post)

Which one is The Concierge and which one is the Bellboy? The former is clean-cut, dark hair, maybe 6'? The latter is shorter, blonde I think. They ref'ed the Sturt-North finals game.

Also, who's the guy with the brushed forward hair (maybe streaked or bleached too)?

We need some ref nicknames to up the flair.

Yogee knows which ones I mean and told me who they are, but I have no idea. Wieland was one of them, but I can't remember which. Durant was probably another; rings a bell.

Posted by Isaac years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#7113 | Report post)

LMAO...

Isaac, that makes me the Concierge while Andy Filmer would be the Bellboy.

Hair brushed forward sounds like Phil Haines.

Nath Durant's has the goatee.

I'd certainly use it if I was refereeing with you involved in the game. Everyone else would be concerned for my mental well being but it'd be fun to do. Any chance of that happening?

re: Referee Rankings (#7227 | Report post)

The game in question was the Qualifying Final at Hillcrest between North and Sturt 17/07/04 (83 to 74) I refereed with Andy Filmer.

The Woodville guys were out watching, sitting at end of the Sturt bench.

Carolyn Tsakolos (nee Gillespie) is an extremely successful referee, she's ref'd a season of WNBA and a Gold Medal game at a World Championship.

Posted by Nathan Wieland years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#7228 | Report post)

I'm going to need photos. We can't have people being allocated the wrong nickname here... But I'm pretty sure that was the game.

When calling a travel, maybe say "Can I get you a taxi?"

Double dribble: "Can I help you with that?"

And I'm sure "Room service!" could apply somewhere.

That's enough; back to work for me. 17 hours and counting today!

Want to see a classic photo?

Check it out.

The guy on the right is a chef who owns a restaurant in India. For some reason he's pretending to beat up one of his staff. We actually stayed with the guy (the chef, not the staff member) when we were there. The closed eyes of the waiter are pretty funny, eh?

Posted by Hoop Addict years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#7234 | Report post)

Yeah, it's the right game because you mentioned about bellboy making blowing his whistle by mistake. That happened at Sturts end, he was going to blow a foul then realised it wasn't. Yogee, ya need to brush up on the difference between Benny and Andy.

re: Referee Rankings (#7236 | Report post)

Well, Isaac told me at the All Star that the bell boy was the guy with the blond tips in.

Considering Ben Mac was the only one there fitting that description...well.....Isaac IS Isaac....and unless Weeksy has had some hair work done (but I think he see's Phil Smyth's barber :) )

Posted by yogee years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#7261 | Report post)

Gotta make a correction with Carolyn's achievements... She also refereed the Bronze Medal game in the Sydney Olympics.

Yogee, you can't have been around for long. I know most scoretable/stats people, if not by name certainly by sight and probably enough to spark up conversation. Scoretable/stats people are all apart of the Officials team - they get our love.

Posted by Nathan Wieland years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#7265 | Report post)

I don't know too many of the junior refs names, but is there a Josh Wilson-Smith or similar?? We had him a couple times this year and he was excellent. Welbourn would be my favourite junior ref by miles. Other refs who I like, but haven't seen around at juniors for a while include Clover, Tristan, Durant, Ben McD, and the guy with dark hair who raises his fist/arm for foul calls in slow motion (classic style!). Phil Haines would be the best ref I've ever had. Undoubtably forgotten a few others or didn't know their names.

Posted by Moochie Norris years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#7280 | Report post)

John Clover and Josh Wilson-Smith have the U20M1 final on Sunday.

Tristan and Nathan Durant have the U18B1 final.

Benn is away on holiday and Phil doesn't do Juniors much these days.

I'd be the slow arm raiser with dark hair - I'm on the U18B2 final with an up-coming ref named Mark Frost.

re: Referee Rankings (#7315 | Report post)

What are the refs like as ppl?

They seem a funny lot. They are kind of underground, hanging out amongst themselves and rarely talking to others.

Whereas we all love the game of basketball for interaction in the heat of the battle, amongst its many qualities, the refs seem to shun interaction from all in sundry. Why is this? Even when you are fortunate enough to bump into a ref it seems difficult to speak to them.

The refs want to be treated with respect as ordinary ppl then they should act like ordinary people. Or am I wrong...

The exceptions to this rule would be:

Mal Cooper
Nathan Durant
Phil Haines
John Beames
Welbourne

When you are an idiot these refs are some the best trash talkers. Better than most I have played against. They turn a confrontational situation into something fun and are never afraid to have a chat and give it back, served with a smile.

Posted by Nathan Wieland years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#7320 | Report post)

Steve-o, I don't think its that they dont try to be ordinary people I think its just highly uncomfortable to go up to people that have abused you the last time you saw them! Also, there are people who seem to just naturally hate refs so your kind of unsure as to what the reaction would be from them.

On the other side of that I've known refs to regularly hang out with people they have met while reffing and even go out with them!

re: Referee Rankings (#7867 | Report post)

Nathan Durant and Paul Welbourne are the most underrated referees going around. Comne-on people, least they act like a person and knows when they make a mistake and are not affraid to admit it. They also when a coach has made a mistake and are also not affraid to throw shit back.

Unlike the referees that believe they are always right. I think you all know who you are.

How can you rank me within the Top 5 Freddy??? I think you have missed a few people that are ahead of me. But hey, I'll take the compliment.

Posted by Nathan Durant years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#7870 | Report post)

I like your exceptions list Steve-O, but I think there are a few more people that need to be included. But both myself and Mal have had a few drinks and chats about how to deal with players/coaches. It would also help if players and coaches treated the referees like people, not aliens. I enjoy the social side of basketball and the amount of post-aba-beers I have shared with players, coaches and referees would reflect that.

Up and coming ref's are wilson smith and i think tall blonde guy - Brad?

Posted by unknown years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#8318 | Report post)

Tall Blonde guy, Brad, Doesnt ref anymore. He has turned into a football player that plays 2 mins in a GF and dislocates his shoulder and needs a re-con from it.
So there must only be one up and coming referee going around

Posted by Giveusahand-Lickheracne years ago

re: Referee Rankings (#8456 | Report post)

Yep, that's Brad, he had all that it took to make it to the highest level, but lost his love for the game.

The other person you talk of is Josh, he refereed the Div 2 Womens GF.

There are a couple of guys of the same age but need tution to be at the same level.
