From Adelaide United, the soccer team:

AUFC Media release:

Pickard Group ready to lodge application for the New National Competition.

30-06-04 marks the end of Adelaide United Mark 1. September 2, 2003 was a significant day for South Australian Soccer in that on this day, The Adelaide United Football Club was born.

However, after a sensational season in the NSL, the contractual obligations for Adelaide United players, coaching staff and administration came to end as at June 30, 2004.

The good news is that the Pickard Group will later this week lodge a new bid to the Australian Soccer Association to be part of the New National Competition geared to Start in early 2005.

After receiving advice from the ASA as to the criteria, timing and the process regarding the application, the Pickard Group will lodge a compelling bid with the full support of the South Australian Soccer Federation and its affiliated clubs.

"Our bid is subject to approval by the ASA." Managing Director Mr. Gordon Pickard said. "We feel confident that with the wonderful support demonstrated throughout last season by the soccer community, the general public, the SA Government, the Media and the corporate sector, that Adelaide United Mark 2 will move forward and build onto all of the goodwill that was established last season." Mr. Pickard said.

"We have signed confidentiality agreements and therefore are not at liberty to disclose any details from the memorandum. Having said that, we realize that many fans are wanting to know what is happening". Mr Pickard said. "Over the coming weeks, we will endeavour to keep our corporate partners and fans informed about the bidding process and any information that may be of relevance." Mr Pickard said.

Back in September 2003, prominent business identity Gordon Pickard and The Pickard Group decided to back the new NSL entity. With the Pickard Group's considerable financial backing and the SASF'S football skills, the new club was created and developed within 5 weeks, to be ready for the start of the 2003/2004 National Competition.

It was clear from the start that it was essential to establish a soccer team that was truly representative of the whole state of South Australia. A new structure and philosophy that would fit with the prevailing culture and ethos of other South Australian sporting teams in the AFL, basketball, cricket, netball etc was needed.

The main objectives were to build a team, promote the sport and consolidate. Essentially the key themes were to become "The Peoples Team".

"We are delighted with the continued support we have received from the Pickard Group, and the South Australian Soccer Federation in partnership with the Pickard Group is enthusiastic about re-igniting the Adelaide United Football Club, in our bid to be part of the New National Competition" The Chairman of SASF, Mr. Tony Henshaw said.

The time frame is as follows:
* June 2004, Information Memorandum is issued to all potential bidders.
* All applicants submit applications to ASA by closing date, July 5, 2004
* ASA analyses all applications from July 6-August 29, 2004.
* September 2, 2004: ASA Notifies successful applicants
