NBL & WNBL team nicknames

Does anyone know the background behind the nicknames for some of the NBL and WNBL teams?

I.e. - Townsville Crocs is obvious, but what about West Sydney Razorbacks? Is there an excess of pigs in Sydney's western suburbs? Or are the people just feral?

Are there a lot of shootings in Brisbane?
Do people throw things in Singapore?
Too many stray cats roaming the streets of Perth?
What did New Zealand break?
What other mythical creatures live in South Melbourne?
If Sydney is the Kings, why isn't the WNBL team known as the Queens?
Are the Perth WNBL team contracted to a men's deodorant company?
Who set fire to the University of Sydney?
How brave are they in Bendigo?
Canberra Capitals is obvious. Their name starts with a capital letter.

What do you think?

Pigs for the Razorbacks.

The reason for Canberra Capitals is due to them being in the capital of Australia. I thought it was pretty damn obvious...

I think you'll find at the time that West Sydney was formed the University of Arkansas Razorbacks had made the final four or close to it.

West Syndey got the public to pick a nick and as Razorbacks was a little different that public went with it.

Breakers is in the idea of a fast break, trying to market the club as an exciting brand.

A Slinger is a national drink.

The Singapore Sling is a cocktail famously associated with the city. Always assumed that the Breakers came from waves in the harbour?

The rest are just nicknames with minimal association with their host cities, I'd say.

The difference between a myth and a Legenend? The tool thinks he's a legend.

Back in the early, early days, pre-1985, the Adelaide 36ers were, according to some witty pundits, named after the average number of spectators they would draw to each game.

Of course, West Adelaide were the established, successful NBL club before the 2 clubs merged, the 36ers still a fledgling outfit.

Obviously, I can assume everyone who frequents this forum knows the real reason the 36ers are so named.

Yes. Adelaide was settled or discovered in 1836. (one of the two)
Hence the 36ers
