An Off Night for Francis Ends Right on Target

Steve Francis was a starter again Saturday night and, by the end of the
evening, a star again. Between the opening tip and the final buzzer, Francis
explored every inch of the emotional spectrum. He made critical mistakes,
injured his shooting hand and put the Knicks in a bind once or twice. It was a
lot like his season to date.

Nets Lose Their Leaders, Then
Lose Their Way Against the Spurs

The frustration of a disappointing season boiled over for the Nets on
Saturday night when their captain, Jason Kidd, and coach, Lawrence Frank, were
ejected from a game against the San Antonio Spurs for arguing with the referees.

Sonics: A problem at point guard?

Coach Bob Hill had been reluctant to substitute for Earl Watson in the past three games, with good reason.

The Sonics point guard, who is filling in for the injured Luke Ridnour, was sensational against New York and efficient against Philadelphia, while Mike Wilks, who is now second on the depth chart, did next to nothing in short minutes of relief.

What's Wrong with the NBA?

The N.B.A. has been ruined by money, selfish players and opportunistic agents, and warped by an emphasis on entertainment over fundamentals. This diatribe can be heard on any bar stool, but it is coming from an N.B.A. agent.

The agent, Keith Glass, is not trying to kill the goose that laid the
golden egg. But he is poking it with a sharp stick in his book, "Taking Shots."
Part memoir, part purist manifesto, the book is a winding tour of everything
right and wrong with the N.B.A. The wrongs are what resonate most. Glass found that out during a recent 10-day book tour and in dozens of radio interviews.

Marbury's Talk Show May Need a Remake

Stephon Marbury's new talk show, "Stars on Stars," on Fox Sports Net gives the Knicks' point guard a different image, but it's doubtful he wants to be seen as a star-struck host. His guest on the first episode, which aired yesterday, was as polished as Marbury was raw. Kobe Bryant's enthusiastic responses to a half hour of soft questions led the Lakers' star to rave, "The best show I've ever done."

Shaq out to prove he can still dominate

Shaquille O'Neal tapped a massive finger on the side of his shaved head, then explained the biology behind his recent resurgence. Did it with a straight face, too.
"I'm on a mission. And I know the older I get, I may lose a step or two, but it's all up in the medulla oblongata," O'Neal said, using the medical term for the base of one's brain. "I've got a lot up there. I've got a lot of knowledge ... in this medulla oblongata."

Kansas tops Texas in OT to win Big 12

Sherron Collins scored 20 points and No. 2 Kansas rallied after another hot start by Texas' Kevin Durant to beat the 15th-ranked Longhorns 88-84 in overtime Sunday and claim their second straight Big 12 title. Durant, the Big 12 player of the year, matched his career high with 37 points but took only two shots in overtime and did not score.

Interview

Derrik Sharp, Maccabi Tel Aviv

You have been in all kind of situations with Maccabi, winning back-to-back Euroleague titles in 2004 and 2005, as well as making it to the final last season. That recent history seems to give the team a lot of pressure to make it once again to the Final Four in Athens. Do you see that as an extra motivation to get back to the Final Four?

"Yeah. I think there's more pressure at Maccabi than at any other team. Just because we represent the entire country as opposed to other teams that just represent their city. It's a challenge for new guys and young guys coming in, it's something new for them. It takes more time for them to be able to play under these circumstances. But, we brought the expectations so we have to live up to it. With every dynasty there comes expectations... the Lakers, the Celtics, the Bulls. So it's a challenge. It takes experience to be able to handle it and thrive."

Wrap Up

Both places in the Quarterfinal Playoffs are spoken for in one group and two favorites emerged from another as the Thursday edition of Top 16, Game 4 unfolded with three out of four road teams going home happy. The first key victory of four on the evening was registered by Winterthur FC Barcelona, a 59-77 road winner at Prokom Trefl Sopot.

EURO NET BLOG

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. It's mid-season in the Top 16, and the race for the Quarterfinal Playoffs is more exciting by the minute. Of course, teams at 0-3 look now like their seasons are done, while the unbeaten ones seem to be already advanced. Don't forget, however, the reversal of fortune Cibona and Panathinaikos had last year, when the Greens came back from an 0-3 start to make the Playoffs and the Croatian sensations were unable to capitalize on a shocking 3-0 start. This year Panathinaikos started the Top 16 a little bit better, and I was especially impressed by the win against FC Barcelona in Week 2. As for Week 3, the score that pops out immediately is the 85-64 dismantling of Olympiacos at home courtesy of defending champions CSKA. Yes, we all happen to think these two teams - Panathinaikos and CSKA - could or maybe even should play in OAKA on May 6, but it's definitely too early to jump to conclusions. It's the most educated guess now, but there is a reason why they play the games, and at least two or three other teams stand decent chances to beat these two powerhouses, especially if it comes down to a single game.

123abc, you've done well, but in doing so, set a dangerous precedent. We, the ever-demanding Hoops SA audience, expect a "WBN" piece of this quality and depth at least every week from yourself from now on!!!!
