Dr J nearly traded for MJ

Found this article in the Chi-Town Trib about the Philly 76ers offered Dr J for Michael Jordon in a trade.

Here's a snippet of the article

"In an interview for a forthcoming book, Katz, the former Sixers owner, revealed that he offered Erving, the Hall of Fame forward, to Chicago on the eve of the 1984 draft for the third overall pick, which the Bulls used to select Jordan".

for those of us, who were not interested at the time...who were the first 2 picks in that draft?...and did they go on to success?

Hakeem at first (or Akeem as he was known then) and Sam Bowie chosen by Portland at second. Blazers already had Drexler, so no need for another shooting slashing guard, at the time, right choice since they needed a big man, but damn hindsight is a bitch. Goes down as one of the worst decisions in history.

Surely Katz didn't have that much vision? At the time, no-one knew how great MJ would be, especially to risk losing Dr J on a risky rookie? Sixers got Barkley that year too, so imagine those two on the same team!

The 1984 draft has to go down as one of the most contentious drafts ever with the Bowie/Jordan picks making it so. Bowie was an excellent player - but he had a very bad injury in college (which nowadays would make most teams run for the hills - see: Rodney Dent, Randy Livingston, Ed O'Bannon - never heard of them, oh - three "can't miss" pro prospects who due to College injuries never quite made the cut - the legend of Sam Bowie played a large part in this...)... Portland simply drafted for need and believed (or ignored) the fact that his leg was (not) okay...

Good analysis of the various arguments surrounding Bowie/Jordan...
