Funny Orlando Draft Camp begins - Go Newley!

The Orlando Draft Camp got underway May 29 in the US. Participants include one Brad Newley and NZer Craig Bradshaw.

No word re Newley that I've seen yet, but Bradshaw isn't off to a great start according to DraftExpress.

While Bradshaw generated some significant buzz last summer playing for the New Zealand national team, a sub-par Portsmouth camp and a discouraging start to Orlando may be putting a halt to any immediate NBA plans. Bradshaw is a player known for being able to step outside, and simply hasn't come close to knocking down anything here in Orlando. He is missing shots, and missing them badly. There is plenty of time for him to turn things around, but Bradshaw appears to be pressing at the moment. He needs to find a way to help himself out in other areas of the game, like defensively or on the glass.
The NZ Breakers are hopeful of securing Bradshaw should he not make the NBA or play in Europe.

Here's DraftExpress' coverage of Day One and Day Two. (How can poor Newls compete with someone called D.J. Strawberry though?!)

Actually, here's something from Ian Stacker's site re Newley:
He went 3/3 from the field in the scrimmage and also dished off a couple of assists, in the breakdown drills he was difficult to guard off the dribble and showed a good understanding of how the game should be played.

not much in those draft camp writeups about Newley.. looks like he isn't impressing much. On the writeups it looks like he might struggle to get into the first round

If he's gonna go in the second - he might be better off not getting drafted at all and go the free agent route... Look where getting drafted in the 2nd got Andersen...

This a fantastic thing for Basketball in Australia and especially Adelaide .
For a young guy from suburban SA ( albeit nice suburb , good on him , to be pushing for a gig in the big time is not to be underestimted .

IMO , he needs couple more years in the body , a little on defensive containment which will come with the above , take his perimeter game from very good to mental and just round out the
rest of his game a fraction .

By the time he is 25-26 and with a mountain of commitment he could not only play in the NBA but contribute quite a bit.

He should be basing his game and journey on a Ginobili , yes the are different models but the intangibles , competitive fire , and basketball IQ of Manu are irreplaceable and that is what will be required to enter the next level .

He can also learn from a Sammy Mac whose improvement and maturity in his game has come late in a sense that he is now a much more rounded player than most expected he would ever be .

GOOD LUCK NEWS

I think Newley is about a 50% chance of getting drafted this year but is an extreemly good chance of making an NBA roster in the next couple of years.

Johnny, you mean earning truckloads of cash in Europe?

True - Isaac... but has frustrated any chances of other NBA teams checking him out as well... "You No touch, no touch"... But he would have been making that cash anyway since he was already with Kinder Bologna... I think the 2nd round is a (made for TV - makes the tv telecast longer) farce personally (either they make it a gaurateed $$$ deal or do away with it altogether)... It's akin to committing the players to serfdom - IMHO...

I don't disagree with that. Perhaps even a token draft value is in order to acknowledge their efforts, etc.

Does a player pay their own way to camps and try-outs? e.g., are the Newleys investing in a trip of flights and accommodation for this chance? Or does an invitation cover that?

Nope they have to cover everything out their own pockets (if wanting to maintain college eligibility...)... If they have an agent they have forfeited that anyway so technically the agent can bankroll them as they are no longer bound by NCAA rules... As far as i am aware - but the invite itself is an as is, "find your own way here buckaroo" deal...

It's not Andersens fault the Hawks are cheap and not willing to pay him. If he's making 2 million Euro why goto the NBA for the NBA minimum.

Given the Hawks woes in the middle they shouldn't be tight wads and give him some decent coin.

Anonymous, thanks - I suspected as much.

If they are drafted but unsigned in the second round, do they get anything?

Maybe a token payment isn't a silly idea. At least enough to cover a player's efforts in being recognised.

A lot of NBA teams use the second round as a gamble. Just maybe they can find the next Gilbert, the next Redd or so on and if they don't who cares.

Teams are now using second rounders on international players knowing that they don't have to place them on their roster, nor pay them a cent, but if they explode and develop as expect then they bring them in and get them on the cheap compared to a first rounder. Smart move on the side of the franchises, slavery for the player.

I guess that why quite a few talented youngsters are made to sign contracts with buy-out clauses which are often highly prices. NBA teams can only contribute $500,000 to a buy out, but the top flight youngsters have buy-outs in the millions.

Splitter in this draft has a high buyout in which he has to fund the majority of it. Magoo had a buy out last year which he had to use his salary for on top of what the Raps paid. I think the Raps even gave him a large advancement so he could pay out his Italian team. Sort of makes the Euro's stay longer, especially if they aren't a potential high pick as it's not financial viable to goto the NBA.

Second rounders get zero. They are restricted as their right are owned by the team drafting them hence they aren't allowed to shop around.

They are treated like normal player contracts so if another team wanted Andersen then they would have to trade for Andersen's right and then offer him a try-out or bring him in on the roster.

I remember hearing that if a player tries out and fails to get a roster place then they can become free agents (probably cause they get waived), but only if they try-out with the team that selected them. Not sure if that's accurate....

I guess second rounders are like first dibs at a player than isn't talented at the time to make the first round, but has long term potential.

Sounds a bit dangerous, but then the teams have all the control. Supply and demand.

Only dangerous for the person drafted in the 2nd round. The franchise gets a free swing.

Things are changing in relation to undrafted players that have declared for the draft that would still be in college if they didn't declare.

In 2004, Randolph Morris nominated for the draft (after one year), got passed over, but didn't sign with a agent and decided to return to Kentucky. Due to loopholes he was allowed back after petitioning the NCAA, but only on the condition he couldn't declare for future drafts. Just after Kentucky is booted from the NCAA this year, he signs a contract for $1.6 mill over 2 with the Knicks as he's technically a free agent.

In the old days once you declared for the draft your college playing days were over.
