New sponsor to be announced tomorrow

Tomorrow will see Nike be announced as the NBL official footwear sponsor, something that probably has been one of the worst kept secrets in the league.

NBL Commissioner Rick Burton has also confirmed this on the Fox coverage of Kings vs Crocs tonight.

I should have more info tomorrow.

Here is the official press release

Hot on the heels of announcing its naming rights partnership with Philips, the National Basketball League (NBL) today confirmed that it has appointed Nike as its official footwear partner through the 2007/08 season.

NBL Commissioner Rick Burton said that aligning the League with a global brand like Nike was important to the NBL as a way of building basketball's presence in the international marketplace. The deal also gives Philips Championship players the choice of the best performance footwear in the industry.

"Partnering with Nike is a significant step forward for the NBL," said Burton. "Not only will it allow us to benefit greatly from the marketing support and expertise of one of the world's top brands, but importantly it gives our players access to high performance footwear which is a crucial element of their kit."

"Over the past 12 months we have put in place a series of small stepping stones which we are using to help grow the Philips Championship," Burton added. "Signing Nike not only aligns our league with a major brand but signals our intention to build our own brand into one of the market leaders on the Australian and New Zealand professional sports and entertainment landscape."

Nike Australia Brand Marketing Director Simon Pestridge said that the partnership was an important part of Nike's Australian plans.

"The NBL has long been one of Australia's premier national sporting organisations and has produced numerous international sports stars," said Pestridge. "This partnership is an important element in bringing Nike's heritage in basketball back to the fans in Australia and paves a way to showcase the best basketball footwear on the best athletes in the League."

"We are pleased that the research we undertake in the area of footwear
design, performance and innovation will now be fully accessible to all NBL athletes."

Full terms of the partnership were not disclosed but the deal will see all Philips Championship players and coaches given access to a wide range of Nike on-court and casual footwear.

Nike, Inc. based in Beaverton, Oregon is the world's leading designer, marketer and distributor of authentic athletic footwear for a wide variety of sports and fitness activities.
