girls open A ko blog

girls comp was of good standard - div 1 level.

round robin stage -

Loretto opened well with a strong team and a win over st aloysius (SAC were well up and fell over) the shorter timed games suiting Loretto who fielded a mainly Norwood line up.

golden Grove won a close game over Unley - Golden Grove looking very strong with a mainly North Div 1 line up.
Unley competitive - but down 2 star players (wardill and one other) and a lot of younger players.

Golden Grove just over Mt gambier by 1 in a tight game- it was clear Mt gambier were going to struggle in the tall department with no real 5 players in there line up and grove with a quality 5 player.

loreto over cabra in a tight game - very physical. loretto's outside shooting on song for a win.

st aloysius over cabra by 20 points - no second hald fade out for SAC this time.

unley over mt gambier - didnt see that game - but unley won.

standing after round robin

group a)

golden grove
unley
mt gambier

group b)

loreto
st aloysius
cabra

---------------------------

cross overs / position play offs

cabra defeated mt gambier for 5v6 spot

st aloysius defeated golden grove easily (around 30 points i think)
golden grove same as loretto v strong starters but not a lot of depth whilst st aloysius very deep all 10 players very experienced and div 1 players at some stage.

st aloysius through to GF

loreto v unley

coaching maestro wayne beaumont again nearly pulled off a huge upset.
loreto suffering the same fate as golden grove - starters tiring.
unley however did extremely well - missing 2 guns they pushed loretto down to the wire and were 1 point down with 45 secs to play - after elading all game. a huge rejection from nowhere by an unley player looked enough - but some cool forced foul shooting by loreto got them over the line in the clutch.
Unley are to be complemented on doing so well with a young crew and were well coached.

loretto through to GF

3v4 play off

unley over golden grove in a close game - golden grove with injury/ies and tiring - unley did well.

1v2 GF

st aloysius convincingly defeated loreto by 50 points - in GF - hard to imagine the result from earlier in the day - SAC bench depth too strong with div 1 players starting on bench. (Former lightning player kamala lamshed coaching SAC)

so final standings -

1) st aloysius (gets the SA seed in championship grade at BA Nationals in Geelong in December)
v. strong / dep team

2 north
2 sturt
2 west
4 woodville players

2) Loreto - definitely good enough line up for nats.

Norwood crew

3) Unley - great effort - they usually go to nats

sturt / forestville mix

4) Golden grove - ? why did they not go to nats last year as well / good team

all north

5) cabra - probably underacheived a bit - but the competition was tough - no room for error - they usually go to nats.

tigers / sturt mix

6) mt gambier - should attend nats (only over at Geelong)- need a tall or two - put some good team work together at times.

sa country

NB - great to see tracey gahan there for the presentation - well done lightning front office / supporting young womens' basketball.

I feel that people should stick to the facts, or NOT post please. Golden Grove is made up of the following: North U18 Div 1 - 1 player, North U16 Div 1 - 1 player, North U18 Div 2 - 4 players, Norwood U18 Div 2 - 1 player, West U18 Div 1 - 1 player and West U18 Div 2 - 2 players. Hardly "all north" and definitely NOT "mainly North Div 1". Apart from that Oracle - your insight into a good day's basketball was pretty well on the mark.
