AIS plugging Gatorade, health experts unhappy
Spotted an article in my daily read of The Age site this morning which outlines a developing issue caused by an agreement the AIS has with Pepsi, makers of Gatorade.
AIS literature pushes Gatorade (or "sports drinks") over water, and one parent was unhappy that an AIS player/rep told students to drink Gatorade instead of water at a school visit.
A sponsorship deal between the Australian Sports Commission and PepsiCo requires the Australian Institute of Sport to promote the sports drink Gatorade through its education programs, despite warnings by nutritionists and dentists that the beverage rots children's teeth and is contributing to the childhood obesity problem.Also:
The contract, obtained through Freedom of Information laws, has been running since 2003 and was renewed by the commission late last year, just six months before Gatorade launched a new sports drink targeted at children under 13.
A study from the University of Iowa's School of Dentistry published last year found that Gatorade caused greater tooth enamel erosion than Coca-Cola.Here's the article:
