Erin Phillips to lead Centrals Women's ABL team

Story in today's tiser about Erin Phillips and the Central District Lions Womens Team.

She will spend the Central ABL season playing for women's basketball pariah Central District, where she also will double as an assistant coach. The Lions were unable to field a team this year after years of winless and directionless ineptitude. That's all about to change, providing a timely boost for the women's competition.

Well done Centrals, run your club into the ground again so you can get a player for 4 games at best and then get on here and tell everyone how you are turning it around.

Centrals is one of the most expensive clubs to play at and you are delivering the worst services and by doing this you are taking junior member's funds and throw it away......

So thats what they are doing with all of their money now?

Don't worry that you entered a 16 1 girls side that hasn't played a game yet for the 2nd season running.

You just keep screwing the junior comp so you can make some big senior signings!

Next time you have some great news about being debt free (they posted it on here some months ago)you may just want to also tell us how you are going incorporate that into actually nominating teams for an upcoming season, and actually have them play at least 1 of those games!

And here was me thinking that this was good news. Are both of you assuming that this has cost them significant money?

I think it's a gutsy move by Phillips (money or not) and an interesting investment by the club. Advertising that also plays. If she doubled as a coach for a junior girls team that could help too.

Spot on Isaac, seems people are quick to assume they are paying her, maybe there's another reason for her going there?

How will her opals committment affect her spot with centrals? how many games will she get into?

on a negative note, They would be paying her and paying her a fortune. Its the only reason to have a player/assistant coach for the 40/60 salary benefit
thats 40% playing and 60% coaching. I would assume that she would be earning in and around $10000 and only taking $4000 of the salary cap money

all these people thinking she is getting paid a bucket load are just making assumptions.

Perhaps she's realised that with her fronting that team, she's going to get the more defensive attention week-in week-out (which can only help her re-gain/develop her game for the opals).

I think it's a great move*

*as long as it's not at the expense of the centrals juniors.

I can't beleive people are having a go at Centrals for this move. If getting the best player going around to play for your club is a bad move then yeah they have really stuffed up!

maybe Central's reasoning is in having Erin playing and coaching for the Women's ABL team, they might be able to attract other quality players to the club.
don't have a problem with that, they have tried everything else possible with no luck.
Erin should be congratulated, at least she is willing to give the club a go!

If they put themselves back into the red, then it is rediculous. Time and time again, clubs think that buying and ABA playing will in some way help the club.

At the end of the year they will be no better off and will only have spent money that could have gone into reducing fee's and increasing lpaying numbers in their junior program

you guys are all crazy, I know on on great authority she is not costing a fortune and that the juniors will not suffer. the junior girls will only benefit from having a champion like Erin on board, her influence will only attract new junior girls to the club.

She is committed to rebuilding the womens program.

this is a fantastic move by the club and it proves that their plan for the future was strong enough to attract a player of her status.

if she wanted money i'm sure the blue and yellow would have rolled out the cheque book.

Agree bevan hicks she will be huge benefit to the younger members of the squad. It will more than likely attract bigger crowds to games too

People at other clubs are now scared that Centrals will not be a push over any more and will not be bottom. Sorry Woodville that will now belong to you.

For a club which over the last few years has struggled to retain and gain female players. This is a fantastic move. Doesn't matter the cost, so long as it will strengthen the club in the long term both in terms of players and financially.

Good luck Centrals!!!

666 how can u claim that other clubs are scared that centrals wont be a push over, unless erin averages 60p.p.g for ya u still wont have a chance the last ball hog the held that team up was mel and she gave up and went to woodville anyway, case of u cant beat them might as well join them i think!!
To be honest winston had to land some sort of big name to make it look like he has done well but when u have approached every female player out there some one had to join after all going for old school has beens that never was like tara curnow isn't exactly a step in the right direction. Even a div 5 south players was asked if she wanted to play real winners there.....

bevan you fool. a lot of clubs did offer her money. more money than any female has been paid in the past few yrs. unfortunately the centrals offer was just too good. you say the juniors won't loose out. well this money could have been used to pay ppl to get out to the schools and get more players. not one player will play at centrals because erin is playing. do you think north has more kids there because dusty is playing? how many players joined easter because jacaob was there? pull the wool out from your eyes son!

how many kids did centrals because trimingham played for them when he did? that's right their juniors kept getting pounded week in week out and he played most of the season. you just don't learn centrals do you....

How well did Eastern do when they got Jacob Holmes?

How well did Woodville do when they got an import and won the ABA?

When will people learn?

Erin will only play a small number of games due to the Olympic preparation, camps, tours, etc.

And even if they win the ABA grand final, nobody cares outside of the club. So how is it going to attract more femal players to Centrals?

Families new to the sport don't even know about the 36ers and Lightning. So they suire as hell aren't going to know about the 6 games that Erin Phillips is going to play for Centrals.

And if you think that a) she is playing for cheap, or b) she is going to drive all the way out to Gawler on a Sunday morning each week to coach, you are kidding yourselves.

But, with the way people at clubs continually stuff up their programs, I for one am not supprised.

can't believe all this dribble! Oh yes, that's right, this is Adelaide, where the majority are so negative,
Good on you Erin, doesn't matter how many games you play for Central, at least you had the "guts" even if you don't get the "glory" in going to Central.
maybe if there were less "snobby" players, thinking it is beneath them to play for Central, the club might be one day successful.

wat are most of you talking about!
centrals are a good club, yes maybe they dont have alot of players, and dont win to much but at least players stay and dont just quit...
i think erin has made a good desision to go to centrals and will help the junior girls alot... u should all get over money and all that other stuff...maybe she actually wants to help people...

Put yourself in Erin's shoes ....
1. to play at North with the lack of facilities (nothing like the fans blowing the dust in from the carpark), for a team that didn't care to be in touch with her when she was injured; or
2. to play for a Club that can definately use her experience and love for the development of the game to re-establish themselves in the District ranks, with facilities that just don't compare many other Clubs
Good Luck to Centrals, to Erin and to Winston. North's loss is definately a big gain for Centrals.
