NH: Need help with a Dodgy Computer

After about 15 minutes my computer makes a short noise (which comes from the computer itself, not the speakers) and turns itself off? Anyone know how to fix this?

.. overheating CPU?
.. Faulting power-supply?

PC or Mac? Operating system? During those 15 minutes, has it operated normally?

Does the power-supply fan (usually near the rear of the computer near the main vents) run heavily in the lead up to the switch off? Is it hot where the computer is (e.g., upstairs and has only started happening since the weather warmed up)? Some computers will have a BIOS setting whereby they power down (or reduce CPS speed) if things heat up.

Is it literally 15 minutes every time or approximately?

Could be a hard drive problem. Do you have another computer you could try it in? Or another hard drive you could try in the same computer?

If you know what you're doing and don't care for warranties, strip it to bare necessities and start it up. If that's all OK, add in a component (extra stick of memory, internal modem, etc) and repeat until you find out what's causing the trouble.

If it's the harddrive and the first 15 minutes are fine, then your data should be OK. Just buy another one, get the data across and you're safe.

PC, Windows XP, run normally during the approximate 15 minutes. "Is it hot where the computer is (e.g., upstairs and has only started happening since the weather warmed up)?" No.

"Is it literally 15 minutes every time or approximately?" - approximately 15 minutes.

Think I'll just take it into a shop. Hopeless when it comes to fixing computer.

Also, a message came up when I was booting once saying something like " One of the disks needs to be checked for consistency". I then did something and I thought it was fixing the problem but it still shuts itself down.

157788, don't be a smug wanker.

157786, sounds like a hard drive problem. Cheap to replace the hardware, though not necessarily the data.

For a cheap option that could be effective, try taking off the side covers of your CPU...

Well, the computer's case, not the CPU! And only if overheating is a problem.

See this page about a failing hard drive - sounds a bit similar.

Works for only 15 minutes then shuts down? Sounds like the 36ers to me...

^ Bhaaaaaaaaaahahaha

If it was hard disk, you'd normally get a BSOD of some sort or Disk events in the event log rather than a power-down 9plus that 15mins of operation you do get would not be terribly normal).

My bet is on overheating or powersupply (or maybe even a M/Board fault) if no errors are being generated.

"CPU" is old and doesnt seem capable of handling the current settings.

"Mother Board" is currently faulty and will not return to action for 6 weeks.

"Hard Drive" Best "new" part of the box at the moment, after some early problems with damage during installation, now appears to be spinning at top speed and looks good for the future.

"CD Drive" Faulty when installed, works occasionally but is unreliable, time to upgrade to a DVD.

"Floppy Drive" Was the best thing ever in its day and on very rare occasions is still a vital tool, but its time is over and should only be used in emergencies.

"Slave Drive" Has been in the box for quite sometime, is always running in the background and can appear when needed, provides vital impact but doesnt seem to be comfortable to be used as often as it should.

"Case" Has been around the unit for a while now, is solid, uninspiring and well..beige, offers good support to all and does a job that it seems noone else can if only had a little more to offer.

Ahh well i had fun...

who wants to play "name that part"

I was thinking Hard Drive: Chappell. Problems during installation (back), the fact that "new" was in quotes was because we were promised a new face, but didn't get one.

And I reckon Slave Drive: Ng, due to vital impact from 3's etc.

CD Drive: Cooper???
