Sabonis - more of a what might have been but nonetheless... Even as a decrepit 30+ year old he was one of the best C's in the NBA - if only he could have gone over earlier...

But i'd say Olajuwon (though he did naturalize) - with daylight to second...

Out of current players - Nash... No doubt...

Tim Duncan. Yeah, he doesn't really count, but he wasn't born IN the USA.

Nash for best 'real' international.

Nash hands down. 2 straight MVPs and he should have got 3 straight.

Dirk runner up.
Yao's up there.

Manu Ginobili for sure .. do the research , look at his success at every level and try and make an argument otherwise .

Nash, Dirk, Olajuwon, whoever

I'd still think the best NON-Americian team would go close to knocking of the best American team.

example:

Nash, Ginobli, Dirk, Pau Gasol, Ming

vs

Kidd, Kobe, Pierce, Duncan, Stoudimere

Yeah Journo, that team may be close to knocking off that USA team, but how about

PG: Paul
SG: Kobe
SF: LeBron
PF: Duncan / Garnett
C: Howard

IMO this is the BEST American team. A non-American team would get torched by this team.

VC Fan, pretty sure Canada is part of North America and The Americas, but I'm also pretty sure you'd get your ass kicked if you call a Canadian "American".

So Steve Nash counts as non-American. Same as LeBron, Kobe et al are non-Canadian.

Nash, Ginobili and Nowitzki are the top 3 right now, with Ming, Parker and Kirilenko (in order) not too far behind.
Olajuwon is right up there for best of all time.
Have people also forgotten about Drazen Petrovic? Sabonis is an interesting case. If he had of gone over there earlier then I would probably have had him on my list.

I'd say Sabonis in his prime. Olajuwon would be next. Nash and Nowitzki are close. Detlef Schrempf was a pretty useful player too, not quite at that level though.

Not saying he would have been a "great", but I wonder how Oscar Schmidt would have gone in the NBA?

Of current players not mentioned, Turkoglu is having a good season, bordering on All-Star level, again not at the "great" level.

Mantis - Schrempf was more than useful. He was an all-star at Indiana and integral to the great Sonics teams of the mid-90's.

Had his own Adidas ad for a while too - "Only one......German.....basketball......player."

Nash, Manu, Dirk, Gasol, Yao would get utterly torched by an Allstar American side.

Manu is the only one who can claim to be even a passable defender in that team. Every other player has their defensive limitations minimized by the defensive systems their respective teams use. Play all 5 of them together and it would be ugly.

LC - Drazen would definitely be up there and if not taken so tragically early in life , maybe right at the summit .

I would put him on an even keel to Ginobili in desire , competitive toughness and ability to rise for the big occasion . Better shooter naturally and a little more textbook , some of his games for Yugoslavia and then Croatia were simply breathtaking .

Stats in his last NBA season were also remarkable .
FG %51.8 3pt %44.9 FT% 87.0
PTS 22.3 REB 2.7 ASS 3.5 STL 1.3 BLK 0.2

To all that do not understand his true legacy and talent do a quick wiki search .
