Is Sutton another J. Williams ??

Well I think it is a fair question. They both played fairly similar roles with the 36ers but during the end of J Williams career people were asking why they held onto him for so long. Is Sutton the same case.

Thoughts?

Could be some similarities, but I think it'd be an early criticism to make of Sutton. I don't think he's been there long enough to suggest that he's been there too long! Give him consistent minutes and a chance to settle perhaps.

Sutts' biggest problem is the lack of game time. Last season, he was always thrown on at the wrong time of the game which meant that he played under tooo much pressure and when he made a mistake, he knew the knives would be out for him and he would be benched for the rest of the game.
He is a reasonable 3 point shooter. The sixers have less 3pa than average and it is the 3 pointers that get a lot of teams across the line.
However, if you watched his body languange when he played, you could tell that if he dared make an error there would be a rocket up the.... As a consequence, he didn't take a risk last season and didn't grow as a player.
When a player plays with fear in his heart, you would always see poor performance. Voldy was not a coach for development and as such Sutts did poorly. Put him under a coach who encourages the best from his players and you'll see Sutts lift!

Another way to look at Sutts is:
Points per minute: 0.24 (Team = 0.43); Best was Hodge at 0.69 Worst Sutts. Score: 1/10
Fouls per minute: 0.11 (0.10) OK -> 5/10
Assists per min: 0.08 (0.08) Best was Hodge @ 0.16 Score: 2/10 (Guards should be higher than ave.)
Turnovers per min: 0.06 (0.06) Worst was Hodge! Score 5/10
FG % 39% (45%) Best was Ballinger 54% (coincidence?) Score 4/10
3p% 41% (36%) Score 7/10
Free Throws % 82% (71%) Score 7/10

Overall 31/70 = 44% Final Grade under Headmaster Phil, "E" (fail).

Grade under Headmaster Ninnis ??

Are there any other local players who could be given a chance now 'Mort is gone?

What about final grade considering he was a cheap 10th man getting inconsistent minutes?

That's what I'm saying Isaac, overall, his mark is currently an "E", but when you look at the trashy minutes he got, and adjust it accordingly, he is probably a "B-" to a "B+" under a coach who gives him some reasonable time and who builds up his self-esteem to get the best out of him.

Looking at per minute stats for anyone outside your first 8 is stupid, as it is no real indication of what that person would do given an equal role. Ie. What Dodman, burdon, snake and sutts do in 2 mins of garbage time is not indicative of what they would do given 20-25 mins of time to get into a game flow.
The games where Maher and Davidson were out showed what Sutts and Ng are capable of doing with a decent amount of responsibility, time and confidence.

Also, relating to J-Williams, Sutts has the luxury of actually playing his primary position - Jason was forced from a natural SG to be a PG and never was comfortable in that role - hence his development and improvement was stifled.

Not NBL material.

Unfortunately, even taking into account the minutes he plays, Matt tends to make poor decisions.
Having watched him play ABL last year, where he gets significant minutes, he still makes the same mistakes and takes poor decisions at times with regards to poor ball distribution and shot selection. IMO he is just not an NBL standard player and unfortunately should not be resigned next season.
And yes he probably is nother Jason Williams but a bit shorter.

For a point guard who pulls the ball up and stops the dribble at the top of the 3-point 99% of the time, he never should have played in the NBL.

Someone has to be number 10,11 and 12. With all the good players in Adelaide in the ABL is it such a disgrace to be a Sixers bench player. There are a lot of undersized skilled player in the central ABL who would love the chance. What was wrong with Williams career. He played NBL for a few season, a few more than most. Not every SA player is as good or as talented as Newly or Ingles.

Don't understand the knocks on Jason .
Played 181 games of NBL , won 3 championships whilst burning candle at both ends , Not advocating his lifestyle but ultimately his choice . He contributed reasonably well in our last Winning season .

Was well below average player up until U/18 second year and all in all , summarising his career probably overachieved . He did that thru a shiteload of hard yakka .

Dominated ABA for quite a few years , Didn't quite have the ability to carry that form to the next level.
Has given a lot to the game and was a good junior coach and a nice bloke .

Correct me if I'm wrong but the minutes you get in a game is determined by how you train through the week. Could it be that playing with fear extended to how he trained? Surely a player who is not training well would not be given considerable minutes. There is a lot of pressure to win games at NBL level, you can't afford the luxury of extended playing time to a player who is not proving himself in training. Even if it is for the purpose of improving himself as an individual player.

Yes, get rid of him and put burdon in his place. At least he will shoot the ball when he pulls up to an open 3 point line rather than shot fake it and pass it off.

anon,

no idea when it comes to Sutton. Do you understand what is really required of a back up POINT guard at NBL level. Clearly not.

Very poor assessment by yourself IMO.
