Melvin - obviously you had to go to bed and get your beauty sleep? and I assume thats why it took you so long to reply? Id like to see you out in this heat playing ball - but obviously you are an arm chair critic, sitting in your nice airconditioning at home, making crap/sarcastic comments about issues that are quite serious considering that we are in the throws of a heat wave

The competition committee at BSA have come up with a hot weather policy of 39 degree's back in October.

Just taken 5 months for Paul Arnott to release it. Funny how the prospect of him needing to do some rescheduling is more important than the safety of players!

39 degree's..... i thought if the temperature was over 38 on any given day, and over 36 for 3 or more continuous days then all games, except those played in air conditioned stadiums were to be rescheduled.

Reply #177133 | Report this post

Hoops 79 you are spot on. See the 16 state boys heirachy made them attend training in 40 degrees. Believe workplace services have been informed this morning and they will be investigating such irresponsible kid management. About time these so called coaching guru's were bought to account for their blinded actions. Believe 40 hours max is the training max under the ABA ruling on 16 nationals. Week in week out twice a week for at least 4 hours a week is more than 40 hours. Who monitors this stupidity.

LOL .. and you're solution to this "serious issue" is to put a few fans next to the bench ?! If you were really that concerned, you would figure out some real solutions, and voice them to those that matter - not just whine on an anonymous internet forum.

oh, and I'm pretty enough, so dont need the beauty sleep. Dont believe me? come out and see me play monday (in the heat), tuesday (in the heat), thursday (guess what? in the heat), and coaching friday ...

Good on ya melvin

Believe there has been some complaints made re the heat policy or lack of its implementation to certain govt departments. Good to see footy and the cricket on the weekend CANCELLED all trials and finals

Obviously the people concerned running these sports have the kids interests at heart and not the program - WAKE UP before something serious happens to a kid you idiots.

BSA's hot weather policy used to revolve around the wet bulb theory and was as useful as its name suggests. Now its an indecipheral. Over X degrees and u blame it on the refs, stadium manager or somebody else with no leadership shown whatsoever.
Understand for the state trials this weekend they didnt use the fans or the water sprays and are waiting until it gets hot.
Sport is a business at all levels so dont hold your breath waiting for BSA, stadium managers or any one else to implement common sense hot weather procedures.
While drinking plenty will get most thru maybe we need to take heat more seriously with global warming and temps staying up for longer and make it a non issue.
Until all stadiums are air conditioned all games should be called off when the forecast temp exceeds 38 degrees on the day of the game.

Any solution falls upon deaf ears - yours included, cancellation or air conditioning are the only two options but BSA doesnt seem to be able to afford air condtioning and wont cancel the games until it reaches....what was that figure.. 39 hot degrees - so the only other cheaper alternative is FANS - CAN I SHOUT IT ANY LOUDER.

SO for those with any sense how much would it cost to aircondition the stadiums? It's got to be a lot cheaper than a law suit and a better option than to have Government regulatory bodies breathing down your neck

Hoops 79, a blatant lie. Good to see that anonomous lying is alive and well still. BSA has a policy that has yet to be released for 5 months. 39 degree's and over and games are cancelled. Nothing to do with training.

Interested observer, not even close to the truth. The ABA does not run the 16 Nationals and considering 16 Nationals is in July, can't see hot weather being an issue. Plus the 40 hours that you speak of is wrong as well. Get your facts straight you Bullsh*t artisit, and have some courage to put your name to anonomous snipes about your kid being cut.

Can't see fans actually doing anything to cool down a stadium. Other than air conditioning, it will still be hot as all hell.

And if yo are realy up in arms about the hot weather policy, go out and what the country guru's making their kids play a carnival in this weather.

Miami Heat, i haven't mentioned anything about training. A couple of years ago when there was a similar heat wave, that was what we were told by the stadium manager as to why the game on that night had been called off. The first post of this thread was asking if the hot weather will cause the games over th weekend to be called off. As yet nobody has got an answer, BSA know the weather forecast for the next week and still haven't publicly made a decision.

Are there, or are there not game this weekend?

Melvin, Crazy and hoops 79 good on ya.

You are an idiot miami heat - training and playing you say is no comparison. Hot weather policy applies to all sport activity - by legislation you will find, weather (get it) it be footy, cricket, bball, marbles - in junior sport it applies over 38 degrees. Be interesting to see what you morons decide when it is 39 next friday and kids choose not to play as is their right.

Check your 40 hr rule as well stupid as BA policy quite clearly state no more than 40 hrs training in the lead up to nationals - obviously no one abides by it particularly you, you double blued git.

We can all talk about who is responsible; however the ultimate duty of care lays squarely on the shoulders of ALL parents of juniors.

Put simply; if you think it is to hot and dangerous, don't play your kid; but don't be surprised if others are willing to go out and run around for 90 mins & don't have a go at them just because it is uncomfortable for you to even watch.

Its your choice, not the stadium managers.

P.S.

How many kids collapsed and had to be rushed to hospital after the 16's state trials this weekend?

ZERO!

When the anti smoking lobby kicked off, people like you, 'God Fearing', were preaching smoking wasnt a danger and let those who want to smoke do it anywhere they like. A quarter of a century later people like you still think its okay to smoke where ever you like and when ever you like despite who it harms and despite the evidence to the contrary.
Fortunately most thinking folk understand that its dangerous to them and those that inhale it second hand and act accordingly.
You are preaching the same message again, my kids will train in the heat as it does them no harm and if you dont like it pull your kids out. All the evidence suggests running games/trainings in extreme heat is potentially dangerous and even moreso in poorly ventillated stadiums and training venues where heat remains and builds temperature further.
I would suggest basketballers irrespective of whether they be Div 5 players or elte SASI and state tryout athletes are guided by the coaches in charge of these trials, games and trainings and to date I'm yet to be convinced these coaches have either the knowledge or the interests of the kids as their guiding principle when it comes to performing in the heat.
Strangely some of these coaches are teachers and school leaders who in their work place positions would be acting contrary to the stated education department,CEO and school based guidelines regarding hot weaher policies.
I believe that the majority of athletes in basketball handle training and playing in extreme heat for the duration of a game or training
but should they have to and is it worth risking one kid in doing it? We should be providing leadership on this matter and make it safer to do so. When playing indoors in over the 38 degree heat air cons should be mandatory or alternatively at least wet spray fans used. If the experts are right, it is only going to get hotter in the years to come with less rain and more days over 35, so surely its wise to address it now
Its not 1970 and we have moved on and very few of us are as tough as "God Fearng' who left is air conditioner off in the car and home all week-end to prove it.

Lets get the facts straight on the U/16 Boys State training (which I actually was present at - were you "Interested Observer" OR are you just "observing" from behind your computer?):

- The training was cut back to 1hour 15mins (from 2 hours)
- Players were made to hydrate before, during and after the session (and were monitored to do so by the staff)
- Of the on court time, OVER HALF was shooting or walk thrus (non competitive work).
- All competitive work was restricted to 5-8min bursts, with 2-3 min drink breaks.
- The injured players were assigned to keep the participating players water bottles full (and themselves hydrated) so that they always ample fluids.
- The manager had ice on hand for the players to use to cool themselves down with (in water bottles, back of neck etc)

No players were affected by the heat (not one of them was sick, dizzy etc) because they were carefully monitored and managed.

Pretty sure this heat will say with us. At least until this weekend.
So, given that it is going to be 39 degrees on Friday, does that mean the games to be held at Starplex and the Dome will go ahead due to airconditioning?
I am assuming games held at Marion, Pas, Hillcrest, Port Adelaide will probably be cancelled/re-programmed....(they will be proverbial ovens by Friday pm!!!)
I think BSA need to make a decision pretty soon so that all involved can plan ahead.
Worry is though that we have only had one game this season ( some none due to byes ) and we have an interupted program coming up due to Anzac Day, School Holidays and Easter.

Basketball SA Hot Weather Policy

In general, basketball stadia should be of standard to provide satisfactory playing conditions throughout the year. To assist in this, Stadium Managers should investigate the inclusion or exhaust fans and other ventilation devices. When scheduling season matches Basketball SA should endeavour to make use of the best available basketball facilities.

The following should apply in oppressive weather conditions.

Stadium Managers should:

* Take steps to maximise airflow and reduce heat build up in stadia,

* Make an assessment of playing conditions and advise referees and coaches,

* Cancel games if playing conditions are considered unsafe.

Stadium Managers shall:

* Extend the breaks between each quarter by one minute.

Coaches should:

* Ascertain whether any players have known medical conditions which may be affected by heat,

* Ensure that players take adequate fluid during the game,

* Make substitutions as appropriate,

* Utilise available time-outs.

Referees should:

* Be prepared to call additional time-outs.

Team Managers should:

* Ensure that players take adequate fluid before, during and after the game,

* Be alert and react to any signs of distress/potential distress in players,

* Ascertain whether any players have known medical conditions which may be affected by weather conditions

Under extreme conditions Basketball SA management may determine that scheduled games will be postponed / cancelled. Such a decision will normally be taken and communicated at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled event.

You south ausies just do not get it. Beth whatever your name is and god fearing - get a dose of common sense.

Policy is 38c or over and it is cancelled - We don't play here when the temp reaches that. We do certain things like extra time outs and drinks breaks over 35 but no games over 38. it is not worth putting one kids health in jeopardy.

Speaking to some parents last year from 16 state trials and they say coach is odd so that does not surprise that he let them train in that heat.

No wonder kids leave the sport in droves over there.

Spare a thought for the Refs this Friday night, a lot of them are running 3 games compared to the players one game.

Just remember they are human, and probably going to be as hot as you, so please take it easy on them.

Dont turn this to a ref bashing thread, just take it on board that the refs will also be as tired and fatigued as the players.

"basketball stadia should be of a standard in providing satisfactory playing conditions"......
Goodness gracious, am I led to believe that Marion Hillcrest and Pt Adelaide ( examples) as stadiums are satisfactory, especially in this heat!!!
Given that as "satisfactory stadium " as Pasadena is , it reportedly measured 49 degrees at the weekend Junior Country Carnival. Given records temperatures this week all non- airconditioned stadiums will only be hotter, especially at the end of the day.
Spare a thought for all players, refs and coaches.
Refs get paid, does this not becomes a work place issue, with Occ Health and Safety considerations.

This heat wave has no precedence. But global warming is certainly sending a warning...revise the policy.

Play at the airconditioned stadiums by all means, but re-schedule the others

Here is the latest from sporting pulse

Due to the excessive heat over the past week, all junior district games on the night of Thursday March 13 (Under 16 Division 3, 4 and 5 Boys) have been cancelled.

Given the high predicted temperatures for Friday and Saturday, junior district games on these days at non air-conditioned stadiums (ie stadiums other than the Dome and Starplex) may also be cancelled. A decision on these games will be announced on this site the day before the games, ie on Thursday for Friday night games, and on Friday for Saturday morning games.

For games that have been cancelled, a decision on whether or not to replay these games is yet to be made. The outcome of this decision will be posted on this site.

Senior district games on the night of Wednesday March 12 will be played as scheduled, with modified timing rules including an officials' time out at the half way point of each quarter if a time out has not already been called, and an extra minute's break at quarter, half and three quarter time.
