Boti's article on points rating

Whilst the article deals with Shensh mostly there are a few quotes there from Chucky that are interesting to me.

"we have to enforce something" well if you are going to enforce parts of tje rules for some teams and not others how is that fair?

Melbourne succesfully negotiate players down each year to there own benefit. If they will not budge on Shensh then go to work on other players to get their points down to allow the space for him to play

Shensh will probably not make the Biejing team so is it fair that he has a higher and or equal rating to players that do? After all we would be taking the best available players to the Olympics right?

Melbourne got Tucker down from a 10 to an 8 and the guy at that time was a walking triple double. They have also got ratings done on Stiffy (just cause they play him few minutes does not mean that he is less of a player) and others

The league's ratings are again a mystery. Not so much Schenscher's 10 (even though I think he should be an 8), but the statistical method that delivers Ng an 8. It now accounts for minutes played (dangerous if not adjusted), but doesn't seem to account for team strength. 15 PPG for the Pigs is a lot different to 15 PPG for the Kings or Tigers.

What was so wrong with the original scheme of having players and coaches rate their peers? For the most part, it seemed fairly accurate to me.

Pick 10 media-types (Nagy, Bernard, Palmer, etc), the league coaches, 10 ex-players who still follow the league (Bolden, Rucker, Sapwell, etc) and perhaps the team captains. Let them rate every player. Discard the extremes. Average the rest. And publicise the results on the NBL site for the duration of the season, with a system of highlighting those a considerable distance from the norm. Introduce half- or quarter-points as well so Cooper could be 6.5 instead of 7 and maybe Holmes could be 7.75 instead of 9. (Will Gaze be as likely to rate Anstey an 8 if he's going to cop it from Carfino and Boti all season?)

The elite should be 10s. Ng should not be an 8. Holmes should not be a 9 (or whatever he is). Forman should not be an 8 - he's not producing even close to 80% of what Anstey does, for example. Tucker shouldn't be a 6 (if it's true) because he had a dud season.

If Adelaide want to fit in a second import down the road, then they simply cannot take on Schenscher's 10 points. Best to let him sign elsewhere, get re-rated after 1-2 seasons and try to get him back then. An alternative may be to squeeze down some of the others, run Schensch with Coops, and get a lower rated import (what's DeVries likely to be?) later on.

I think we need to scrap the player ratings full stop.
They rely too much on perceptions and are not a fair and accurate point of measure.
Something needs to be put in place to ensure an even competition, but this points system is a joke and is not the answer.
Salary cap paymenst are a good way of managing a team's roster - is this enough or do we need something else to help ensure equality?

I have a question
How many points are each of our current signed players?

LC, the salary cap has been poorly policed and given no parity. I think a points rating can be effective given a broad dataset.

Go Big, the 07/08 season or this coming season?

A player's worth based on performance will decide his value. If a club is picking up a good player, they will pay good money for him. As long as the balance between quality of player and fitting in the salary cap is maintained, then the points system is absolutely pointless (pardon the pun). Scrap it altogether. Having said that, there needs to be a much more transparent list of payments that do and do not fit in the salary cap and much stronger policing of cap abuse.

They are currently unable to police the salary cap and subsequently, the points cap is required. I can't see what's changed since the end of last season and what might happen before the start of the next season that would mean that they could police the cap better going forward.

The points system is a good idea but it doesnt work in the situation of injuries eg Maher/Ng. Maher is only rated a 5 yet would start ahead of Ng if not injured. Due to Mahers injury this year Ng stepped up and now he and the team are being penalised for having an injury. Ng is being penalised for teams trying to fit him under the points cap now at an 8 whether it be Adelaide or Singapore (of which they have made him an attaractive offer) and Adelaide if they keep Ng are being penalised by not being able to go after a 7 point player say and having to sign a 5 point player - just doesnt seem fair in this type of situation?!
