Nunawadding - South Adelaide u16 girls win

South Adelaide girls (looked a lot like their Div 1 team)win the u16 grand Final in C1 grade. They defeated Sturts under 16 Div 3 team (6 first year players, 2 top age players). Sturt stayed with South for the first 15 minutes but eventually lost by about 25 points. Congratulations to South on a great win.

What are you saying? was it their Div 1 side or not? Why are you congratulating them if it was? Too many questions, how about just explaining in plain english what you are trying to say!

Typical south stunt - only way they can win anything.

How did the 16 boys go at the classics - 12th was it not ? At least they turned up this year.

Yes it was their Div 1 side, just being sarcastic.
What club in their right mind would field a Div 1 side in C1 grade. I was told it was to give them more confidence in their game.

I think most SA Div 1 teams would win C grade divisions in Melbourne tournaments.

Well done to the Div 1 South Adelaide girls on winning a C grade division at the tournament!

A truly remarkable achievement - the pride of South Australia.

They get hammered in the district comp all the time, perhaps BSA should take a hard look at some of the teams in Div 1 that continue to get flogged then go and play Div 2 and below competitions elsewhere so they can win. Why is it that the Clubs have to have Div 1 sides in every grade? Woodville U16 boys do it as well, and I am not knocking them for doing it if it builds the kids confidence, but it makes a mockery of why they are in Div 1 when there are other teams out there that would willingly take their place in Div 1 and play the Div 1 comps.

Div 1 teams that should be Div 2 or even 3...Div 2 teams that should be Div 1 - This topic has been done to death for years. Until a decision to field teams in the appropriate level division is made, the best basketball can not be produced at the higher levels in SA and in particular, when the teams travel interstate for classics etc.

trouble is you never quite know what victorian teams you will be up against.

they may have gone in B grade last time and thought C was the go.

maybe they were not confident at all?

I'd be more concerned about the reffing over there - the interpretations were off the planet at times.

There was some ordinary reffing at Nunawading at times, but that is because they have to get refs to do all the games. Some refs officiated in over 30 games in 2 days. They can't be working at their optimum levels after that kind of effort - so I wouldn't hold that against them.
The reffing at the 16/18 classic that I saw was top-flight.

The officiating at the classics covered everything from very good to very bad with non calls the major difference.
The AFL had, and some would argue still has, the problem of running mainly Victorian umps who maintain a bias that is subjective not overt cheating where being a Victorian umpire carries baggage that can skew results.
Basketball needs to use more neutral refs especially at Nationals where despite the officials' oath being taken is not scrupulously adhered to.
Interstate teams are sick of hearing the Vic refs 'let it go more 'because this is blatant nonsense. The difference with Vic refs officiating games between interstate teams and Victorian teams is that they watch for more infringements from the interstaters on a subjective level which is part of the home turf phenomenon.
Vic teams are great, Vic refs don't deliberately cheat but the advantages the Victorian basketballers have would be diminished if a more consistently fairer system of officiating was in place at all levels of competition that addressed the issues of bias.

189361 Most of this group of girls were actually in the Classics last year and went to the Nationals!! So no excuse for being in the lower grade.

189432 I guess that C1 grade was the highest grade that they hoped that they could win in. Doesn't say much for the clubs opinion of the teams ability or self esteem.

Anon & Confused get over yourselves already.
This group are depleted of 4 players that went to classics and Nationals (Which was a late inclusion due to others not taking up their invitation & they chose to experience that level knowing that they probably wouldnt be up to the standard anyway.)last year as 2nd year under 14, which have all left to stronger clubs.
Lets not start a bitch fest on why they are at other clubs because all had different reasons....and not relavant to the tournament.
Not everyone reasons for attending a tournament are the same but a tournament is very different to a Classics.
Just because it might not be the same as what you are requiring from a tournament, I think it is a little small minded of you to want to continue with your one opinion. It would have to amount to Basketball snobbery for want of a better description on your attitude.

Excellent response - some people really have to get over themselves and just let young people play basketball. To those who get to Classics and do well - congratulations. To those who care enough
to give up a long weekend to play basketball in a tournament in Melbourne looking for some wins, and get some - congratulations. Not all players can be superstars - that doesn't mean they shouldn't have the chance to experience the winning feeling at the right level for them. I am bemused why people on this forum keep bashing the "lower ranked" clubs and think that will help basketball in SA. How many of the posters on this forum are a committee member of their local club or volunteer in basketball in any way?? The way forward for basketball is to get more people actively invovled, and helping out clubs who still rely on too few to do too much.

getwdfa - Typical South response - all excuses aside the issue is that your Div 1 team should not be in Div 1 they should be in Div 3 as proven by the weekends GF win in C grade beating Sturts Div 3 side

Firstly to you nasty minded knockers of anything.

Dont blame the 13 & 14 year old girls for the division they played in, it had nothing to do with them, they went to melbourne and played where they were told.
secondly,
This team has lost 5 girls from last season who would have walked straight into the Div one side, which means 5 girls in the current team would be div 2 players. ( does that tell you something )most of the girls are first year players, and one second year girl was playing with a broken nose and another with a degenerative shoulder injury.

Two or three of our games won in Melbourne were by around 4-5 points. so that shows other teams in pool C1 were of a similar standard and had they made the final the winning margin would have been similar.

This team has had three different coaches since summer season and gets smashed every week in Adelaide, so give the girls a break.

Try to remember you weak indivuals who post nasty derogative comments about other clubs and players, you are talking about young 13 & 14 year old girls

must make you feel real good about yourself

well said bia - the girls are doing the right thing. Basketballsa can do the right thing by establishing pro/rel like Vic and there will be less of all the negative stuff and more of ppl getting positives out of their experience.

If South and several other clubs that are now opposed were to accept pro/rel,
these girls would have a competitive game every week, rather than getting smashed weekly.

Why not give it at least a try?
We have had the current system in place for 7 odd years, and as far as I can see things got worse rather than better.
