Bench pressing basketballers

Was surfing the net for strength/weight training recently and noticed that Fraser Gehrig and Mal Michael have the highest bench press recorded by an AFL player (around 176kg from memory).

Got me thinking, who in the NBL would be the bench press guns, and more specificaly who of the 36er boys would be the king of the gym so to speak.

My money would be on Mark Davis historically, though I reckon Brad Davidson of the current boys, pound-for-pound, would bench a fair bit. As for the league, Grizzard and Abney would be around the mark at the top.

Cripes 176 kg. That sounds a little high. Thats almost 400 pounds. Im assuming its a 1RM max. Id be surprised if they pumped out 10 at that weight, id also like to see em do it..

I'm with a few others...Blakemore by far. He was bigger than a fridge and wuld not have been out of place in the NFL as a line backer.

Jason Joynes formerly of Newcastle & Geelong Supercats. Apparently he could lift around 185 Kg. He is a big unit.

Bring Bakari Hendrix back and he's your man.

Grizzard (90kgs) and Abney both have pretty slim frames. I would think Rosell Ellis would beat them quite comfortably post peck injury and probably even now, that guy is very strong! He would have to be playing center at 6"5!

Jeff Arnold (1995 - Supercats Import) was pretty HUGE around the upper body - surely he must have been able to bench a fair amount...

For the 36ers I'd say Brian Devincenzi or Chris Blakemore. Both had massive barrel chests!

On the topic of bench pressing did anyone catch any of the Paralympics? Some crazy lifts there, this Egyptian guy benched 202kg in the 56kg category. That's basically a jockey benching more than anyone in the NBA.
