Thanks for the fantastic current information of the Broken Hill Basketball Association... Anonymous.
We all have many things to be proud about in each of our associations and the competition changes every year with each association improving, or losing star quality and dropping away for a little while.
Port Pirie has a player also playing in the WNBL a ROY named Abby Bishop who is currently 4th in scoring, 1st in total rebounds, 1st in defensive rebounds, 1st in offensive rebounds and just outside top 10 in a few other statistical features and starting for the team currently sitting top (but hopefully beaten this week by Adelaide).
We've had 8 players make State this year along with 2 in the Pacific Coast Team and 2 coaches named as assistants.
If every team with all the great players attended (Broken Hill, Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge & all the rest who have great players) we might as well hold the Country Championships here!
Although Port Lincoln & Roxby aren't classed as main stream, they are all making a fantastic effort to increase their skills and their knowledge of the game and we are more than happy to have them here playing.
These are area carnivals and if people choose to attend they can, Broken Hill choose not to attend as we do not attend theirs, which is fair enough as it's always good to reciprocate and attend each others, which is something Port Pirie, Port Augusta & Whyalla all do.
Are you saying the John Spooner Award means nothing? Basketball is a TEAM sport and the John Spooner award is based on which association has the most Minor Round wins throughout the course of the 2 Junior Carnivals, which collectively the TEAMS achieve. It is a fantastic award to win and good on Port Augusta last year. Port Pirie won it 3 or 4 seasons ago & runnerup for the last 2 and we are stoked as we can see our association on a whole is taking all the right steps forward.
It doesn't matter who you play in the minor round of any carnival the cream always rises to the top, Country Champs last year Port Pirie were able to boast all teams making it to the semi-final and 4 into the Grand Finals... Didn't win any, but we got there, which is an achievement in itself as many teams didn't.
We all take it pretty seriously as the players/coaches/team managers/parents pay a lot of money to attend the events and want to attend.
You don't play everyone at the Country Champs either... 2 groups of 4 with cross over finals, but again Cream rises to the top.
Thank you for the praise on our carnival, we have the most teams attend out of any Country Carnival in the State and OMG what a job it is as we only have 4 courts available to spread 88 games between on the saturday starting at 8am and running through to 10:30pm with 9 minute quarters instead of 10, just to pick up 5mins per game all day long...
We hope everything goes well, but the umpiring is causing all sorts of headaches at the moment.
