Broken Hill used to be a relatively big part of the competition, however due to their carnival being early October, we are unable to attend (our season hasn't started yet), therefore Broken Hill do not attend ours.

Last year Port Augusta won the John Spooner award with Port Pirie runner up for a second year in a row, so we are quite confident our area is very strong add in the abilities of Yorke Valley who have many talented juniors (re AIS Representatin) and Ever Improving Port Lincoln who nominated Div1 in a couple of grades last year for the first time.

Port Pirie played in 12G, 12B, 14B, 16G, 16B & 18B Grand Finals in Port Augusta and won 12B, 14B and 16B.

Broken Hill a have player playing for the Adelaide Lighting (WNBL Champs)also have 12 players that made State this year, against Port Lincoln and Roxby who would bee luck if they get one in. if those 12 players are not at your carnival then the standard will be lower than it could have been.
Port Augusta may have won the John Spooner shield but if you dont have the best comp then it doesnt really matter, Whyalla has a very similar comp, but again who takes it seriously when you look at the draw, it is designed for home teams to do well and everyone does not play everyone, so again how much do we read into it.

Your carnival is very good and has improved over the past few years however you need the biggest and best associations to continue to improve, all the best for your canival.

Thankyou "anonymous" for your praise on our carnival...
Yes we know our carnival needs the best Associations there but with lack of court availability our carnival.... We couldnt take many more nominations (unless it was a long w/end).
So you se we would like all Associations to come to Pirie and play in our tournament, but then again EVERY Association would love that...
Like "Pirie Panthers" said....

So you see some circumstances are out of our control, but that does not say that we wont go there in the future...
It will all depend on alot of things and the backing of our BOM (Board of Management/Basketball Committee)....
If you "anonymous" would like to chat further im sure Issac could pass on my email address and we can discuss further?
But i would like to talk to a name, not just anonymous?

Thanks for the fantastic current information of the Broken Hill Basketball Association... Anonymous.

We all have many things to be proud about in each of our associations and the competition changes every year with each association improving, or losing star quality and dropping away for a little while.

Port Pirie has a player also playing in the WNBL a ROY named Abby Bishop who is currently 4th in scoring, 1st in total rebounds, 1st in defensive rebounds, 1st in offensive rebounds and just outside top 10 in a few other statistical features and starting for the team currently sitting top (but hopefully beaten this week by Adelaide).

We've had 8 players make State this year along with 2 in the Pacific Coast Team and 2 coaches named as assistants.

If every team with all the great players attended (Broken Hill, Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge & all the rest who have great players) we might as well hold the Country Championships here!

Although Port Lincoln & Roxby aren't classed as main stream, they are all making a fantastic effort to increase their skills and their knowledge of the game and we are more than happy to have them here playing.

These are area carnivals and if people choose to attend they can, Broken Hill choose not to attend as we do not attend theirs, which is fair enough as it's always good to reciprocate and attend each others, which is something Port Pirie, Port Augusta & Whyalla all do.

Are you saying the John Spooner Award means nothing? Basketball is a TEAM sport and the John Spooner award is based on which association has the most Minor Round wins throughout the course of the 2 Junior Carnivals, which collectively the TEAMS achieve. It is a fantastic award to win and good on Port Augusta last year. Port Pirie won it 3 or 4 seasons ago & runnerup for the last 2 and we are stoked as we can see our association on a whole is taking all the right steps forward.

It doesn't matter who you play in the minor round of any carnival the cream always rises to the top, Country Champs last year Port Pirie were able to boast all teams making it to the semi-final and 4 into the Grand Finals... Didn't win any, but we got there, which is an achievement in itself as many teams didn't.

We all take it pretty seriously as the players/coaches/team managers/parents pay a lot of money to attend the events and want to attend.

You don't play everyone at the Country Champs either... 2 groups of 4 with cross over finals, but again Cream rises to the top.

Thank you for the praise on our carnival, we have the most teams attend out of any Country Carnival in the State and OMG what a job it is as we only have 4 courts available to spread 88 games between on the saturday starting at 8am and running through to 10:30pm with 9 minute quarters instead of 10, just to pick up 5mins per game all day long...

We hope everything goes well, but the umpiring is causing all sorts of headaches at the moment.

Anonymous - Broken Hill are not the be all and end all of the country SA competitions.

As stated above Port Pirie have a player playing in the WNBL, as too do Whyalla and probably a lot more of the country associations (Yorke Peninsula etc) all these associations also are well represneted at state level (players and coaches) i am sure the Port Pirie Basketball carnival will survive without Broken Hill there lol get a grip!

Broken Hill is not the be all and end nor is Port Pirie or any other Association. Is all I have stated we all strive to be the best and to be the best you need the best playing.

South Austrlia basketball will only get stronger if ALL associations work together, yes and all carnivals have court trouble, umpires, etc problems even Country Champs but we still aim to grow and improve. For example do you hold two carnivals a year one for the four strong associations and one for the smaller associatons and have some Div 2 sides attend, more players, better comp, etc, all associations are still doing what they were doing ten years ago and no one wants to think outside of box. (all to hard)

Tom's and Matt's points are very good and i wish Port Pirie all the best for their carnival.

Good point "anonymous 214188" and thanks for your comments but have a problems with one of your sentences....

I think you need to think about what you have said.....
How much time does it take to organise a carnival and how much space on our (SAC) calander can we cram dates into....

With B/Hill, Pt Aug and Pirie all before xmas (with State trials and training for two w/ends) and Whyalla in Feb. Two lots of State Champs (u14 & 18's on long w/end in March and 12 & 16's at end of March) plus with Nationals in April for 18's for the next few years...things are very tight and really burn out for kids it is really a hard call....
So while your comment shows merit, it will never happen

Agreed with your comments Matt but the Div 2 sides are not doing state or national, they may go to SA Country Champs. If any Association can get more people involved in basketball and have more kids playing the better it is for the sport.

Nationals and State is not the be all and end all of basketball 90% of players and kids never played State or nationals.

So again think outside the box not "it will never happen" negative attitudes only hold thinks back because we are scared of change, it is human nature to be scare of change or that some one is better than us and we would rather put up walls than put little extra effort, espically if we get nothing for our efforts we want do it.

No you didnt read the whole post....

There are not enough dates to do another carnival!!!!!

Kids also in the country play more than 1 sport....so the more carnivals you do the more pressure on kids and pressure on parents wallets...

Do you now see what i mean...

Participation..great....pat on the back to all the volunteers that give up time to run these carnivals...great.....

but when is enough, enough?

i agree state and nationals are not the be all and end all.....but you need to read the whole post to understand.....

It will never happen?
