Spirit-Dragons game to proceed

The National Basketball League (NBL) has confirmed that the Sydney Spirit's home game against the South Dragons on Saturday will proceed as scheduled despite the default notice served on the club on Wednesday.

Interim Chief Executive Officer Scott Derwin confirmed that the match would go ahead as planned at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre at 7:30pm on Saturday, but would now be played under the auspices of the NBL and Basketball Australia.
The owners of the other NBL teams however banded together to agree to provide a rescue package for the club by drawing on money from a surplus in a previously unused emergency fund. The Spirit players and coaching staff met with the League on Friday morning and, despite being asked to take a significant decrease in salary for the remainder of the season to ensure basic running costs for the team could be met, voted to field a team on Saturday.
The proceeds from ticket sales to the remainder of the Spirit's home games will go directly towards paying the players and coaching staff.

Tickets are priced at $10 for adults, $5 for children (13 and under and $25 for families (2 Adults + 2 Children or 1 Adult + 3 Children) and are available through Ticketek.

There are only 8 players who have agreed to play. There is still doubt over the remainder of the season as the offer is not high enough for players to survive. Lets hope there is a huge crowd.

Paul, do you know who's not playing? Offer too 'low' for one of them?

Stephon Marbury?

Marbury doesn't play for Spirit. Not sure yet but apparently there are several players struggling to pay their expensive living costs in Sydney as they have not been paid for a month. I also believe Cairns are not very strong at the moment. Lets hope we can get through to the new Fox sponsored season.

The AFL has plenty of money maybe they could buy a side or two

The NBL can become the social league to keep AFL players fit during the off-season.

So it basically means that remaining games will likely be a whole lot easier for their opponents.

Maybe Greg Evans got wind that he wouldn't be part of the new comp. next season, and this is his way of getting back at the NBL?

1233, he couldn't afford to keep going this season let alone next season. Probably just hopeful of a sale before they take the licence back and he gets nothing for it.

Looks like it's Low and Khazzouh who already have deals signed in Europe and will be heading there rather than suiting against the Dragons.

Rest of the team supposedly took a 50% pay cut.

The NBL won't allow someone to buy half a licence to cover the rest of the year. No wonder they are going so bad.

No official release (not sure that there's an official Spirit admin to put out anything like that) but a few people have mentioned it and it's obviously pretty plausible. Supposedly Khazzouh has had plans to play in Europe for a while but was just serving out a few years in the NBL first.

Ok. What kind of money would the be making in Europe?

Could vary wildly depending on where they played. Obviously more than they'll get by staying with the Spirit.
