NBL Top 6 - The Final Week

Current Ladder
1 Dragons 28 20 8 71
2 Tigers 27 19 8 70
3 Crocs 29 17 12 59
4 Breakers 28 16 12 57
5 Wildcats 29 16 13 55
6 36ers 29 15 14 52

Games to come..
Today
Tigers @ Dragons
Wednesday
Crocs @ Tigers
Thursday
Taipans @ Breakers
Friday
36ers @ Hawks
Saturday
Tigers @ Wildcats
Breakers @ Spirit
Hawks @ Blaze
Dragons @ Taipans

Tigers and Dragons are now guaranteed the top 2 spots and with the Tigers still having a game in hand on the Dragons, it really comes down to todays game. Who ever wins should take top spot.

New Zealand - They hold the series against both the Wildcats and the Crocs, but not the Sixers. So one win from their last 2 games will get them a top 4 spot. You would expect that to come at home against Cairns, but one win from their last nine games makes it no certainty. If they lose both, they could finish as low as 6th.

Townsville / Perth - Both have one game and both against the Tigers. Perth hold the series against the Crocs. If one of them beat the Tigers and the other doesnt, the winning team will finish in the top four.
If they both win, Townsville will be in the Top 4, but not the Wildcats if NZ win either of their games. If they both lose, Townsville finish in the Top 4, Wildcats will be 5th.

Adelaide - Perth hold the series above the 36ers and are one win ahead and Townville are 2 wins ahead. The only team we can jump above is NZ and that is only if the lose their 2 games.

Looking at the remaining games, I would say the Sixers are going to New Zealand to play the Breakers on the 19th Feb in a knock out final.

Side note. Not 100% sure, but perhaps the 36ers could finish 4th.

This is from the NBL site on working out the ladder order.

The order of the ladder will be determined by each team's winning percentage. If teams are tied at the end of the season, ties will be broken by the head-to head record of the tied teams, if possible. Teams that finish the season tied in win-loss and tied on head-to-head will be separated by points differential in
games played only between those tied teams. Teams that still remain tied will be separated by total points for divided by total points against for the entire
season against all opponents, with the highest percentage winning the tiebreaker.

What happens if the 36ers, New Zealand and Perth all finish wth 16 wins, 14 losses. Who finishes on top of the other two?

Perth have the series over the 36ers
36ers have the series over the Breakers
Breakers have the series over the Wildcats

Is the points differential then done between all 3? Because, if that is the case, we could then finsih 4th possibly.

Kobe - we would still finish on the same amount of wins as Perth though and they have the series on us.

New Zealand Breakers 28 16 12 104.8%
Perth Wildcats 29 16 13 101.6%
Adelaide 36ers 29 15 14 101.2%

and if so thats real tight as well

But then, NZ would still finish above us on that basis.

How will they factor in a three way split where some teams play each other 4 times and others 3.... It has the potential to get real messy.

It aint gonna happen anyway. Sixers will finish 6th and well be off to Townsville or NZ - which would you prefer?

If 36ers, NZ and Perth all tie on 16-14, the head to head between them is as follows:

NZB - won 4, lost 2, 624 pts for, 565 pts against, pts differential +59

36ers - won 3, lost 3, 598 pts for, 620 pts against, pts differential -22

Perth - won 2, lost 4, 612 pts for, 649 pts against, pts differential -37

Based on this, NZ would be 4th, 36ers would be 5th and Perth would be 6th.

The next scenario is 36ers tie with one of NZ or Perth, on 16-14, with the other (of NZ or Perth) finishing 17-13 or better. If 36ers tie this way with NZ then 36ers finish 5th and NZ finish 6th (36ers have the series 2-1). If they tie this way with Perth then Perth finish 5th and 36ers finish 6th (Perth have the series 2-1).

So 36ers' best possible finishing position is 5th.

They could play any one of Townsville, Perth and NZ if they finish 5th, depending on other results. Likewise if they finish 6th.

So whom do we want to play on their home court in a knockout first final? I pick Perth. The other 2 teams have strong outside shooters who perform well on their home courts. Townsville are playing really well of late and, while NZ have been struggling, I think they will lift with a full strength team playing a final at home in Auckland.

Perth are suspect and the 36ers match up well against them, with Rogers out of the equation.

Its highly unlikely that we will move further up than 6th. The only reasonable changes could come from Townsville and NZ switching the 3rd and 4th position. Being in 6th, it will be either of these 2 teams that we will come against. I wouldn't want to say which one will be easier. Perth have one game left against the Tigers in Melbourne. Its not likely that they will win this one however they have the split on us. NZ have 2 games left, 1 against Taipans at home and one against Spirit on the road. Its likely they will win both of those and therefore Adelaide will not be a threat. That just leaves us with Perth to tie but they get the split. My guess is that after this week there will be no change to the ladder or a slight change only with NZ and Townsville.

After Maher's game last night possibly being the last home game, he had a brilliant one. Heal did the same thing with his retirement looming. Perhaps the key to winning the instant elimination playoff game is for everyone to pretend that its their last game.

I'm still looking good for my $20 on the Dragons to win the title at $9.00.

Go Dragons!...and 6ers of course.
