Basketball Australia announces Under-17 Squads

Basketball Australia has today announced the U17 Australian squads...http://linky.com.au/iypnn

At the camp held on 15-18 June at the Australian Institute of Sport, 25 men and 25 women will be vying for the chance to represent Australia at the first FIBA Under-17 World Championships for Men and Women, to be held in 2010.

The squads were selected following the 2008 Under-16 National Junior Championships held in July and the 2009 Under-18 National Junior Championships in April.

Following the camp, two teams of 12 athletes will be selected to contest the FIBA Oceania Championships in Brisbane from 20-22 August, 2009, in an attempt to qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championships.

The Under-17 men's team will be mentored by Guy Molloy (Head Coach), Paul Jones (Asst. Coach) and David Rehn (Manager) while the Under-17 women's team is headed by Peter Lonergan (Head Coach) and Sandy Tomley (Asst. Coach).

4 boys and 5 girls - great representatation from our (per capita) smaller state!

Will the camp clash with the yet-to-be-held u16 nationals?

Two teams of 12 are to be selected for Bisbane in August of this year for the Worlds in 2010 from the squad of 25 named this week. Rather than give kids false hope they should know that if they did not get selected in the squad their chances of selections in future squads are negligible.
Some kids could have opportunities in other sports etc that they could take up now rather than continue in a sport thats passed them by while others might want to take on part time jobs that weren't possible while they thought they were a chance of camp selections through NITCP commitments.

153 - or better still, we could teach these kids that nothing is truly worthwhile unless given to us on a plate and you really should never put yourself forward for selection (let alone risk having a good time along the way) unless you know the outcome before you go in. *hope sarcasm is sufficiently evident*

While only 12 kids will go to the qualification games in August, there's a very strong possibility that the team for August will change significantly between August and the World's if past programs are anything to go by. Often there are some 50 players who come through the system on the way to selecting the 12 to go to the world championships. I suspect that the group will be opened up again post-qualification and players considered that haven't previously been considered. About half of the current Gems squad weren't selected for the first camp when they first started looking at players for this tournament.

I spend a lot of time coaching young people and one of the things I say most often is that its not the teams you make which will determine how successful you are as a player, its how you respond to the teams you don't make.

And if the kids want to take on part-time jobs or play at a less-intense level that's fine too, as long as its their decision and not because somebody has told them they've been screwed along the way.

Well said ankles! Why give up, when you could just try harder? Didn't Bogut not get selected for Victoria as a junior? Now look a where he is and what he is earning and what he has experienced. Yeah, you're right anon #153, just quit and work at Macca's instead.

Its a shame

Ankles - good call and good luck to the kids picked. How many good kids from this age group gave the game away 18 months ago after 14 nationals of 2007 so they could get in elite programs at other sports. I can name 3 volleyball and 5 football kids that would certainly have been in the mix from across SA and Vic. How do we keep these kids involved as our game can only suffer ? Then you would have a truly indicative squad of the best talent going around. Is it a simple case of kids getting bored of the bball way and growing out of the system as they need greater challenges ?
