Call for new $4M Hillcrest Stadium

RUNDOWN Hillcrest Stadium is bursting at the seams and in urgent need of replacement with a bigger venue, Basketball SA says.

Basketball SA chief Mark Hubbard has called on stadium owner Port Adelaide Enfield Council to help find a bigger site, and for all levels of government to help fund the minimum $4 million price tag of a four-court arena.

-------------------------

North Adelaide Rockets vice-president David Durant said the state of Hillcrest was restricting growth of the club.

"If you were a parent looking around for a sport for your child and went into Hillcrest ... then went into a venue for another sport that's all brand new, what would you choose?" he said.

Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Gary Johanson agreed better facilities were needed in the northeast and there were "a number of possibilities" the council was looking into.

Its a fairly decent parcel of land at Hilcrest, but not enough to hold 4 courts and you would have to cut down some fairly big old trees - which councils don't like doing.

About time Basketball SA had a voice and tried to get some support for upgrading their stadiums.

Now we just need to replace Marion, Port Adelaide, and Southern with decent stadiums.

great to see, they could sell off the current land to pay for part of new stadium. Excellent news if they can get it. A rare well done for getting local basketball in SA some voice.

Is that why some many North players are heading for the better Centrals courts?

Hillcrest stadium is a dump. The roof leaks which is dangerous, the floors need to be replaced, there's no room whatsoever for teams to warm up or prepare for matches whilst waiting for other games to finish (I know that's a common problem at other stadiums as well), there's not enough seating for spectators, no heating or cooling (another common problem) and there's only a tiny cafeteria area. Plus more courts would allow more teams to train at home, which at the moment is impossible for the number of teams that North has. An upgrade is definitely needed. At least Southern and Port Adelaide have multiple courts, even though they are a bad standard as well.

With somewhere like Port Adelaide, Do you think a revamp may be just as good? get some decent flooring and new backboards and rings? surley that would be a start, and at a reduced cost.

Morphett Vale Stadium redevelopment due to begin- Dec 09. Four courts, new entrance, better facilities, new floors. Should end up a great stadium. Agree that Marion and Port and Hillcrest need some help but I thought that Marion council were looking at a whole new stadium on Sturt Road? Perhaps the uncertaincy about basketball in the state- ie the 36ers saga- means some councils are wary of a lot of expenditure on new stadiums.

Get stadium with AIRCON AND HEATING inside and room for spectators, get a stadium halfway between hillcrest and port adelaide, demolish two stadiums and then relocate west and north adelaide sharing the new facilities save money for future due to global crisis.

Forman, there is already a large facility approximately half way between Hillcrest and Port Adelaide, its called the Dome. You can't amalgamate two clubs to a location halfway between each other because its district basketball and what you are doing is removing 2 district clubs and creating a new district club somewhere else. In this case you would have 3 district clubs all together in one area (Woodville). Families of either of these 2 club are not going to travel much longer distances on a regular basis when they take their children to training.

EC - your geography is a bit off. The Dome is half-way between the Port & Adelaide, not Hillcrest. It's an interesting thought you raise about not wanting 3 clubs in the same area, except that this is already happening. West, Magic & Woodville are all based in the Western suburbs.

The mooted Regional competition will probably make this more feasible but certainly it is difficult trying to sustain 3 "District" clubs in a smaller area.

How many district venues actually have heating/cooling ? The Dome is the only one I know of and it doesn't work all that well.

Why do all the district clubs need their own venues ?
Why not build one huge centralised multi purpose venue with a heap of courts and play everything from the one place... Cut down on overheads, staff e.t.c.
Have a decent bar and food facilities with profits going back to each club.
It seems to work ok for Netball.
Sure it would cost a heap of money, but surely in the long term it would be much cheaper than building and maintaining all these three court stadiums.

Western Suburbs, you are right if you draw the line North/South but if you draw it NE/NW then the Dome is somewhere around the middle.
