Reebok Eurocamp Update

The Reebok Eurocamp has begun and both Patty Mills and Joe Ingles are playing on the same team - Team Royal Blue.

Both played 30 minutes each in a 46-64 loss to "Green".

Mills led all scorers with 16 points on 6/13 shooting (4/10 on 2PT, and 2/3 on 3PT) including 2/2 FT, to go with 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and just the one turnover.

Ingles scored just 1 point and went 0/3 from the field (0/2 3PT) and 1/2 on free throws. He only had 1 rebound, 1 steal and 3 turnovers in what appears to be a very poor showing.

"Green" shot 62% from the field compared to Mills & Ingles team's 40% mark, and committed just 14 TO's compared to 21.

Looks like Mills confirmed his status as a scoring PG, whilst Ingles may had hurt his stock.

And DraftExpress has an update on day 1: http://linky.com.au/hgwfo

"In the third game of the day, Patty Mills' very talented team was blown out almost right from the get-go by Nando De Colo's very French influenced team. Mills made plenty of shots but really struggled to control the pace of the game from the point guard position, not finishing particularly well around the basket and appearing to settle excessively for outside jumpers. His teammate Joe Ingles had somewhat of a nightmare performance, with just 1 point and 3 turnovers in 30 minutes."

that talk about mills correlates with what they have said about him in their player profile page, hopefully he can have a more settled game later. Ingles, well i guess he just wants to play like he can as apposed to those numbers.

Only 3 feild Goal Attempts in 30minutes of play, with No assists.. Hopefully Ingles can somehow get some confidence early in the next game, and produce a solid performance that he deserves

I think Ingles must have been feeling a bit Giddey, and it showed on the offensive end. We can only hope it showed on the defensive end too!

there's no love there for Patty Mills. how can they say those things to Patty when he outplayed those 3 NBA best Point guards during Beijing Olympics???

and what, again???hey Patty just topscored the game with 16 points today in Reebok Eurocamp and look what are they saying again!!! its all plain enviousness.

Hidden Kho - what is that by the way? - Mills caught Paul and Williams by surprise at the Olympics. Yes he is fast enough to be successful in the NBA - but there is more to the game than beating your opponent down the court to score on layups. NBA opponents won't allow him to do that very often once he enters the league. So he has to become more than a one trick pony.

Right now, NBA scouts are rightly questioning whether he will be able to run an NBA offence, get other players easy baskets, and defend his position (his height is going to hurt him). He will have to convince NBA teams that he can improve these weaknesses in his game before they will risk a mid first round pick. I hope he does convince them, but he has a steep learning curve ahead if he wants to be more than a backup spark-plug in the NBA.

Mr Boston aka Beantown - you are very right that they need to see more of Mills but talking about his height that will hurt him is like telling Chris Paul, Mike Conley, Nate Robinson, Darrick Martin, TJ Ford, Iverson and many more who are all stood below 6 ft. are hurting because of their height.

The problem is Kho that all of those players have multifacited games:

Chris Paul: Amazing passer, good outside shooter, solid defensively with quick hands.

Mike Conley: umm, good college player...hmmm

Nate Robinson: Has that obvious amazing athletesism, capable shooter from outside. Still not a great player tho.

Darrick Martin: Admittedly i havent heared of him.

TJ Ford: Solid shooter, passer, handler of the ball

Iverson: Honestly do i have to list reasons as to why Patty Mills will never be close to AI?

Also just noticed this on nbadraft.net

I agree that Denver would be the ideal team for Patty to learn under Chauncey Billups. The Nuggets have pick 34 and Patty has slipped to pick 33. Interesting.

Im specifically talking about the particular HEIGHT that Beantown have said will going to hurt Patty Mills. All of those players mentioned have the same height or even shorter than Patty.

now in regards with the experience that most of us obviously refers only to American College ball or NCAA experience, Patty Mills did not only excel in NCAA but even in the different corners of the World playing in Jones Cup representing AIS and Junior Wordl Championship and the Olympics. now, if we will not consider those experiences then maybe we're too obsess with way we are oriented that US NCAA is the only gauge of an NBA aspirant.

You are right that it is not necessarily his height that will be his down fall (although it is no secret that bigger guards have an advantage), it is Patty's skill set and mental toughness that is letting him down. That is the point i was trying to make with the players you listed is that they are small like Pat but they have the talent to counter-balance that. Unfortuanetly there are 5-6 other pgs in the draft that will play all over him at the combines.

1 men in this years draft:

1. Ricky Rubio: Better handles, better passing, better NBA size
2. Tyreke Evans: Stronger, can play SG also
3. Stephen Curry: Can shoot the lights out even from NBA range, also averaged more assists than Mills
4. Jrue Holiday: Better shooter, more athletic
5. Jonny Flynn: Similar height but is much stronger, better passer, better penetrator, better shooter.
6. Brandon Jennings: Better passer, stronger body, was a better shooter but his touch has fallen away while in Europe

This is not to knock Patty who i think is a great player and has a future in the NBA no doubt. We just need to face the fact that he isnt the best player in the draft, he isnt even close to the best PG.

Kho - you are only addressing one of the issues I raised about Mills. B-easy has already said nearly everything that I would say.

But specifically with regard to height, the problem I see for Mills is that opposing teams will immediately seek to exploit this - it is just smart basketball. Guys like Earl Boykins, Earl Watson, Muggsy Bogues, Ben Gordon, Marbury, Nate Robinson and Eddie House are, or were, very good players in the NBA, but have been exploited defensively throughout their careers. In most of their cases, it is the prime factor why they have not lasted as starting guards for their teams. In Marbury's case, he is known for being a defensive liability on every team he has started on.

Of all those guards I mention, I think Boykins and Watson are the most apt comparisons to Mills. They are both as quick as you can get, great ball handlers and decent shooters, but have never lasted as starters, because opposing teams often abuse them defensively.

A couple of comments about his second game today;

"Australian Patrick Mills was absolutely the star of the evening's all-star game, posting an impressive 30 point performance on 8/18 shooting from the field and 12/13 from the line. Mills handled the ball on a string all game long, showing terrific quickness keeping his man off balance, and making an absolute living in the mid-range area with his deadly pull-up jumper. His ability to utilize strong hesitation moves makes him extremely difficult to stay in front of, and he did a good job not settling for tough shots from beyond the arc today, getting to the line repeatedly. He clearly thrives in up-tempo settings such as the one seen in today's all-star game, which came in stark contrast to his morning performance, where he seemed to over-dribble somewhat while trying to create in the half-court.

NBA teams we spoke to still expressed some doubt regarding his point guard skills, which is something he could still stand to work on. He posted 3 assists compared with 4 turnovers in the evening game, seeming to be hunting shots quite a bit, and didn't look all that comfortable getting others involved. Scouts generally were impressed by the quickness and shot-creating ability he showed, and he also did a better job defensively today as well"

And this from nbadraft.net on Mills:

Patty Mills Likely in 2nd Round

Nearly every scout I spoke with in Treviso said that if Mills remains in the draft this year he will be a second rounder. His performance in Treviso did nothing to change the nosedive that his stock has taken since workouts began. One scout mentioned the fact that guards were blocking his shots during the Oakland workout and that his size was becoming an apparent issue.

Before his wrist injury, Mills was riding a wave of momentum having led the Australian national team in scoring during his great performance in the Olympics. He came back and struggled to play up to the same level late in the year, and hasn't been able to turn things around.

Word is that Mills has yet to sign with an agent and could go back to school, despite the fact that he announced he would stay in the draft. Regardless, many scouts see Mills as an eventual back up in the league.

That is so rediculous talking about his passing ability. Did anyone look at the boxscore and see how many assists his whole team had. TEN! thats right ladies and gents, 10 assists for the entire team.

a) this is a tryout game and tehrefore you have to try to show your wares and what better way to do that than score 30!

b) how are you supposed to get a heap of assists when the rules are different, and why do u need to if you can score at the clip that he did!

c) how can that be considered a bad performance at all

I do see how his height worries the scouts but for gods sake, pure basketball ability is evident.
