Hawks sign Mat Campbell

Probably only fair given the work he put into helping save the club, but Mat Campbell is the first signing for the Hawks this off-season.

The Wollongong Hawks have signed Mat Campbell for the 2009/10 NBL Season.

Campbell was instrumental in the Hawks' fight for survival earlier this year and will be a key figure in new coach Gordon McLeod's plans to build a competitive team.

The 32-year-old thought his career was over when the Hawks were on the brink of folding in February.

But he soon shelved retirement plans and is almost certain to be named captain for next season.

I think this is one case where a verbal agreement would have been sufficient. Who would have ever imagined Matt Campbell not continuing on with the Hawks. Well done to him for all he did to resurrect the Hawks and its only fitting that he should lead the team again.

Good on campbell with his work saving the hawks, but i feel his game is no longer up to nbl standard. perhaps a smarter option would be to let campbell be an assistant coach and on the board of the club??

Not up to nbl standard!!! JOYCEovic You are kidding yourself.
One of the best defenders in the two spot in the league, He is a Darren Lucas but can shoot the ball.
Ask most two guards in the elague, who do they hate playing against, most if they are honest with themselves will say campbell because he is relentless chasing people around screens.

Sav is no hawks certainty. He has been discussing other options. Adelaide has come up more than once.
