Rhys Carter to Sweden

As was expected, Rhys Carter has signed as an import in Sweden, with Gothia Basket. The league over there is a similar standard to good SEABL sides, and is where Liam Rush played last year and is expected to play again this year.

Carter was pretty solid in the NBL last year for the first time in his career, and certainly is a good backup at that level, but most clubs had that position covered and he was forced overseas.

Probably the only exception was Adelaide, and if they could have swayed a Brock Motum, for example, to be their U23 player then Carter would have been an excellent fit for them.

Some might say Wollongong should have taken Carter over Rhys Martin, but I guess the Hawks see Martin as a long term player, and one who is quite inexpensive at the moment.

What do people think? Should Carter have got a gig somewhere this year? If so, where?

It really does seem to be the back up guards that have suffered most out of this u/23 rule.
Rillie, Mee, Carter, Davidson. None of them would be the worst player on any current team list. In fact, they would more likely be your main 6th man.

The effect of the U23 rule has been overstated, given that in previous seasons each team had to have a YAP, who had to be under 24 at December 31 during the season. The reduction to eight teams is the main culprit for a number of players heading overseas or not getting a gig.

Did he really try for a job here in Australia? If he has a Euro passport, it was probably a good time to give it a shot over there.

If he had a Euro Passport, would he still be an Import?

Good on him - hope he does well. He played well last NBL season off the bench, and has been in great form in the Big V comp for Latrobe City.

Sweden certainly wasnt his first option, but a good one (given his girlfirend's origin) nonetheless that will pay the bills.

Would be good for him to get back to a better league next year though, because he really showed something (at last) for the Dragons.

Any guesses as to what Rush and Carter might get for their gigs over there?

A mate who coached in Scandinavia reckons somewhere between $50-100K Aus for a six month contract, for a ballpark figure.

One would think the cost of living in Sweden would be quite astronomical, therefore the pay needs to bring that into account (no pun intended).
