Is there still a National ABA competition?

I believe part of the announcement of timing may also include an announcement of a second tier elite competition which will replace the old ABA/ABL/ACC.

We will see if that bring WA back into the fold.

WA dropped out a while ago because they didn't think it served any purpose, and only a few clubs in SA were interested in being part of it. The money the clubs had to pay to be part of the ABA and then the money they had to pay for travel and accommodation if they made the finals was could never be gained back in kind or in $$$'s.

Interesting. Many clubs have moaned about the cost of being in the ABA and competing at ABA Nationals - yet it is cheaper by far than competing at the U14 nationals, because leagues equalise, and you rarely hear complaints about that.

Central ABL teams that made the national finals often had to field a second rate team as players with NBL/WNBL commitments weren't available.

Also, the Central ABL is essentially an amateur league with a few players getting pocket money, which makes it difficult to compete with semi professional leagues.

The players saw the ABL involvement as an end of season trip, the clubs saw it as a waste of money.

Having played in both the WA & SA state leagues I can tell you that the top 4 or 5 clubs in WA would dominate the SABL. Bigger budgets mean more imports, more NBL or ex NBL players.
Teams such as Norwood, Sturt, Forestville would compete and play finals, but would struggle against some of the best teams.
